Iggy Pop, Peter Gabriel, James Taylor, Norah Jones, Sarah McLachlan and Mavis Staples are among the heavy hitters appearing on the new Leonard Cohen tribute album Here It Is, which will arrive Oct. 14 from Blue Note. The 12-track project was produced by longtime Cohen friend Larry Klein and is led by Taylor’s cover of “Coming Back to You,” originally found on Cohen’s 1984 album Various Positions. “Leonard Cohen had been a friend since 1982 or so, and in the last 15 years of his life, he became a close friend,” Klein says. “He was possibly the wisest and funniest friend that I had, and someone that I enjoyed, immensely, in every way. After he passed away, I found myself frequently covering his songs with other artists that I was working with. One reason, of course, is that the songs are so ...
There is a small upper crust of acts who have been playing huge venues for decades and are still able to fill arenas and stadiums. The shortlist would include the Rolling Stones, Eagles, Billy Joel, The Who, Springsteen and Elton John; each artist has been consistently selling out gigs since the 1970s. But right below that collection of rock royalty sit the larger swath of artists who have likewise been touring for years but are probably unable to fill venues in the same way. By cleverly joining forces, artists like Jackson Browne and James Taylor, both world-class touring veterans, are able to ensure robust ticket sales, especially among their fanbase hesitant about COVID. And then there is a group of newer artists that has been steadily building a fanbase, and will likely be touring for ...

And with the slew of choice archival titles that dropped like so many acorns across the autumn landscape, both formats will certainly be seeing a significant bump in those numbers as the holiday season closes in. Joe Biden’s inauguration — which, despite everything, is happening — will be celebrated with some virtual music on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 8pm ET. The lineup includes Carole King, will.i.am, James Taylor, Fall Out Boy, Michael Bivins, Ben Harper and AJR with Keegan-Michael Key and Debra Messing as hosts. The invitations — which circulated today — say there will also be appearances from Connie Britton, Kal Penn, Sophia Bush and Jamie Camil. Fall Out Boy is somewhat of an obvious choice for this, considering Pete Wentz’s personal connection to Biden: “My parents met working for Joe Biden in the Senate in the 70s. To me he is a beacon of empathy, compassion and kindness. The times we live in call for a leader with these specific traits. Proud to call Joe Biden my president,” he said in an In...
