Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill Musical Closed on Broadway, Citing Omicron Variant

Jagged Little Pill, the musical based on Alanis Morissette’s transcendent album of the same name, has closed on Broadway. The show had been put on pause starting Saturday (December 18th) due to “a limited number of positive COVID test results,” and there are currently no plans to re-raise the curtain. In a statement shared on social media, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David, and Eva Price revealed Jagged Little Pill would not be reopening, citing the surging Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus: “The drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and, due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the compan...

Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill Musical Leads Tony Awards with 15 Nominations

For obvious reasons, it’s been a weird and shortened Broadway season. Still, the 74th annual Tony Awards are soldiering on, celebrating the work of those productions that were able to put on shows before the March shutdown of New York’s theater district. That includes Jagged Little Pill, the musical based on Alanis Morissette’s iconic album of the same name, which leads the 2020 Tonys with 15 nominations. To be fair, there was a considerably smaller field this year than is typical. Because the pandemic forced Broadway’s shutdown, the cutoff date for Tony-eligible productions was bumped to February 19th, 2020. (Jagged Little Pill officially opened on Broadway in December of last year.) That meant that only 18 plays were eligible for nominations, down from 34 in 2019. There is also one fewer...

Being stuck in quarantine can really make you focus inward, reflect and sometimes get emotional, and those are just some of the emotions that play out in Alanis Morissette’s new video for “Smiling.” Teaming up with members the Broadway cast of Jagged Little Pill, the visual gives us a deep look into how people are doing at home — with some beautiful choreography from frequent Beyoncé collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. From close-ups to silhouettes of figures by the window, this video aims for viewers to feel. And we really do. “Smiling” is off Morissette’s upcoming album, Such Pretty Folks in the Road, which is set to release July 31. She has also previously shared “Diagnosis.” And to celebrate her birthday and the 25th anniversary of Jagged Little Pill, she released a digital re...

Right before the lockdown started, I was lucky enough to take in performance of the truly phenomenal Jagged Little Pill. With Broadway remaining closed through at least Labor Day, it’ll be some time before people get to witness the stage show again. Thankfully, Alanis Morissette will bring a piece of the production into your home when she hosts the cast and crew for a benefit livestream on Tuesday, May 19th. Dubbed “You Live, You Learn: A Night with Alanis Morissette and Jagged Little Pill” and taking place from 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. EDT on the Jagged Little Pill Facebook and YouTube pages, the event will benefit the Actors Fund’s COVID-19 relief efforts.
