European Union backs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for WTO role

The European Union has endorsed former Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the next director-general of the World Trade Organisation, Bloomberg reported. The business news outlet cited anonymous officials familiar with the matter that all the 27 EU member countries agreed on Monday in Brussels to support Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala. Bloomberg also reported that the United States has decided to back Yoo Myung-hee, South Korea’s trade minister, for the role. The position has been fiercely contested amongst candidates of different countries since Roberto Azevedo resigned in August. Last month, Okonjo-Iweala and Myung-hee were selected as the last two candidates in the contest. The EU’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost for Okonjo-Iweala’s candidacy, with the final winner expected...

Italy closes theatres, gyms as virus cases mount

Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte tightened nationwide coronavirus restrictions Sunday after the country recorded a record number of new cases, despite opposition from regional heads and street protests over curfews. Cinemas, theatres, gyms and swimming pools must all close under the new rules, which come into force on Monday and run until November 24, while restaurants and bars will stop serving at 6pm, the prime minister’s office said. Italy, the first European country to be hit hard by the pandemic and impose a nationwide lockdown, on Saturday clocked nearly 20,000 new cases in a 24-hour period. “Semi-lockdown for a month,” said the Repubblica daily, noting Conte had done little to appease regional heads who had appealed for much softer measures to save ailing businesses devastated ...

Deportivo La Coruna sign Uche Agbo from Standard Liege

Segunda Division B side Deportivo La Coruna has announced the permanent signing of Uche Agbo from Belgian First Division A club Standard Liege. The centre-forward put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Spanish third-tier club after successful medicals. The 24-year-old spent the second half of the 2019-20 season with the side and featured in nine league games but his efforts were not enough to help Fernando Vazquez’s men avoid relegation after finishing 19th on the table. Swayed by his performances during his short stint with the club, the Blues and Whites have decided to secure the forward permanently. “Uche Henry Agbo will continue in the ranks of the Real Club Deportivo,” read a statement from the club website. “The Nigerian midfielder, who played for Depor in the second half of l...

Simy Nwankwo: Crotone ready for Serie A return

Crotone forward Simy Nwankwo says the team is battle ready for a difficult campaign in Serie A. The Pythagoreans are back in the Italian top-flight after spending one season in Serie B. Giovanni Stroppa’s men finished in second position behind Benevento last season. Simy emerged top scorer in Serie B last season with 20 goals in 37 appearances. The team was promoted to Serie A, for the 2016–17 season, the first time in the history of the club. That adventure lasted just two years following their relegation at the end of the 2018/2019 season. Crotone is already anticipating another tough spell in the top-flight. “Sunday will start another important season both for Crotone and for our life. Mafia boss bites, swallows prison guard’s finger in Italy

A Sicilian mafia boss serving a life sentence bit off and swallowed a prison guard’s finger during an altercation, an Italian news report said on Tuesday. Guiseppe Fanara, 60, who was serving a life sentence at Rome’s Rebibbia prison, attacked seven guards in June when they came to inspect his cell, the daily Il Messagero reported. Fanara, from Sicily’s notorious Cosa Nostra clan, was nine years into his sentence under Italy’s tough “41-bis” penal code reserved for mafia members. The harsh prison regime isolates mobster bosses entirely to prevent them from running their clans from behind bars. “During the altercation, he (Fanara) bit off the agent’s little finger on his right hand,” the paper said. “The finger disappeared, leading a Rome prosecutor to conclude it had been eaten,” it added....

James Rodriguez set to join Everton

James Rodriguez is very close to completing a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton. The Italian coach has been key in convincing the Real Madrid midfielder and, while negotiations are not yet closed, they are on the right track. An agreement could be closed between Everton and Real Madrid for a fee between 25 and 30 million euros. Ancelotti got the best out of James in a Real Madrid shirt during the 2014/15 season, while the 61-year-old also brought the playmaker to Bayern Munich on a loan deal in 2017. The relationship between Ancelotti and James is strong, which is why the 29-year-old has given the green light to move to Everton ahead of other options he had on the table. James stated in an interview with a Mexican media outlet last week that his priority is to leave Real Madrid for a club ...

Aston Villa, West Ham linked with move for Gonzalo Higuain

Aston Villa and West Ham United have been linked with a move for the Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine is expected to leave the Italian club this summer and it will be interesting to see where he ends up. The highly experienced striker had a forgettable spell in the Premier League with Chelsea and it is highly unlikely that he will return to England once again. There is no doubt that Aston Villa and West Ham need to sign a quality striker this summer but the 32-year-old might not be the ideal fit for them. As per reports, Juventus are looking to get rid of the player. Higuain is past his peak and his style of play is unlikely to suit West Ham or Aston Villa. The two clubs should look to sign a complete forward instead of a poacher. Gonzalo Higuain is better off joining a club...

French club, LOSC Lille have issued an official statement to wish former player, Victor Osimhen, the very best of luck after the Nigeria striker completed his move to Napoli. Inter president Steven Zhang has held talks with Lionel Messi’s representatives over a potential move as well as Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu according to a report in today’s print edition of Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. In order for Messi to join Inter, he will have to terminate his relationship with Barcelona and although there are certain concerns over his future with the club, he has not yet requested to leave Catalonia yet.
