50 Years On, This Bangle Is Still the Ultimate Status Symbol

Founded in Paris in 1847, what once was a small workshop has gone on to become one of the, if not the, most iconic jewellery brands in history. Cartier worked closely with countless sovereigns and royal families worldwide, creating everything from crowns and tiaras to necklaces and earrings. The brand has since become a regular on the red carpet, with celebrities wearing its glittering creations for premieres, awards season, and industry events. However, Cartier isn’t all about ornate pieces. (Though, it does them exceptionally well.) Some of its most recognisable jewellery, particularly the pieces that have become status symbols, have an industrial aesthetic—one of which is the Juste un Clou bangle. The Juste un Clou bracelet is the Cartier Love bracelet’s younger an...

We Don’t Mean to Brag, But We’ve Found 2021’s First It Bag

Fast-forward 16 years and the French fashion powerhouse has bestowed us with more It bags then we can count. There’s Tess, Drew, C, Nile, Darryl, Faye, Aby, Gladys, Daria, Betty, Edith, Sally, and Marcie, to name but a few. And now, joining their illustrious ranks is Woody, a bag tipped to take 2021 by storm. Woody is a little different from its iconic siblings. Firstly, the bag’s not made from leather, be it real or faux. Instead, Woody’s body is constructed using a heavy-duty, durable canvas, trimmed with flashes of rust-coloured leather, which flank the logo-emblazoned cotton canvas ribbon handles. A thing of beauty, and although it’s undoubtedly made with the warmer months in mind, we’re already predicting the Woody will be a sell-out as soon as it&nb...

The Hardest-Working Staples to Buy Now and Love Forever

As an editor of a fashion website, I spend a lot of time reporting on new trends, new labels and new ways to wear things. However, sometimes you really never can beat a classic, and it’s arguably more important to build a wardrobe that you’ll love for years, if not decades. Thinking of the longevity of your purchases not only is a way to have a more sustainable approach to fashion but will also help you to carve out a style that is timeless and feels truly you. The idea of a capsule wardrobe created a real buzz around 2014 when a number of industry figures promoted a compact closet built of pieces that all perfectly match. There are some items that we think will always rise high above trends, making them the perfect pieces to invest in and add to your capsule (or not-...

If You Only Shop One Sale This Year, Make It This One

It’s no secret that sale shopping can sometimes seem stressful. With a barrage of deals and discounts, knowing which ones are worth your while is tricky. Well, that’s what we’re here for. We’ve been at this fashion thing a while so we like to think we know a thing or two about how to shop a sale efficiently. Our top tips? Don’t put off browsing your favourite stores because you feel overwhelmed, you’ll likely miss out on your sizes and the best pieces usually go quickly. And, of course, try and avoid buying into seasonal trends too much. Sales are the perfect time to invest in those high-quality timeless pieces for a lot less.  Many of us, myself included, have shifted our approach to our wardrobes this year, shopping for less, better quality pieces that will last a long time. We’ve a...

Court stops COSON from general distribution practice

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has declared that the General Distribution which is practised by the Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON, is illegal. The practise involves the annual distribution of the same amount of music royalties, usually about N30,000 each, to thousands of the organization’s members. Copyright Society of Nigeria Ltd/Gte. The judgement which was delivered on November 25, 2020, by Justice Oguntoyinbo also ordered COSON to stop further distribution of royalties “in a manner known as ‘General Distribution’ or how so ever called which does not re...

Nigeria most expensive for upstream projects – NNPC chief

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mele Kyari, has disclosed that Nigeria remains one of the most expensive countries in the world for petroleum upstream projects. Upstream is refers to points in production that originate early on in the processes of crude oil production. Its activities include exploration, drilling, and extraction. According to him, “Nigeria is one of the most expensive territories in the world for upstream projection and part of the corporation’s mandate is to reduce cost by at least five percent. “We have reduced costs substantiall...

Nigerian government seeks new Eurobond

The federal government yesterday disclosed that it would approach the Eurobond market next year in its effort to shore up the economy, amidst cocktails of measures being put in place to douse the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy. On the same day, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, while speaking at the 55th Annual Bankers Dinner organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in Lagos, predicted a two per cent growth in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2021. Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed the Eurobond plan while speaking on Bloomberg TV, explained that the decision would depend on the prevailing interest rates. She, however, did not specify the amount to be accessed from the Eurobond. The Eurobond option is ...

Rollercoaster: Bitcoiners who missed rally feel relief and regret

Arianna O’Dell, a 30-year-old entrepreneur and songwriter based in New York City, had a tumultuous four-year journey in cryptocurrency before selling her investments in February. During her rollercoaster ride, bitcoin prices swung from less than $1,000 to nearly $20,000. O’Dell may not have made optimal decisions about when to buy or sell, and missed out on the recent rally – but said she does not regret that. Investing $2,705 worth of proceeds into her business was better than enduring the stress of daily fluctuations, even though the price has since doubled, she said. “Honestly, I’ve had more luck in Vegas than I’ve had with cryptocurrencies,” O’Dell said in an interview. She is part of a relatively new class of retail investors who joined the cryptocurrency market years ago, helping pro...

China accuses India of discrimination over latest app ban

Beijing lashed out at India on Wednesday after it banned another tranche of Chinese apps for national security reasons, the latest sore point between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Tensions remain high between Beijing and New Delhi after a deadly June clash in a disputed border area that left 20 Indian soldiers dead and an unspecified number of Chinese casualties. India banned 43 Chinese apps on Tuesday — including some from e-commerce giant Alibaba — for threatening “sovereignty and integrity”. China said it had “serious concerns” about the move and India’s “so-called pretext of upholding national security”. “The relevant methods clearly violate market principles and WTO guidelines, and severely harm Chinese companies’ legal rights and interests,” said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao L...
