He spoke about the financial ramifications of migrants coming into the city who get aid through the city’s law guaranteeing a right to shelter for those who are in need. “Every community in this city is going to be impacted,” Adams said before pointing to projections that state that New York City could see sizable budget cuts to cover a $12 billion deficit. To date, 200 emergency sites and traditional city shelters have taken in 60,000 people who have crossed the southern border of the U.S., arriving in the city through buses.

The mayor also voiced his frustrations with President Joe Biden and his administration over not providing enough support to the city during the situation. The White House released a statement defending their response, highlighting the $140 million in federal funds given to the city and New York State, firmly stating that “only Congress can reform our broken immigration system and provide additional resources to communities across the country.”

Adams’ comments were quickly amplified by Republican leaders – some of whom applauded the busing of migrants from Texas by Governor Greg Abbott and other southern states. “It has gotten so bad, even the leaders of Democrat strongholds like New York City and Massachusetts are throwing in the towel,” GOP House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California said in a statement to the press. His fellow Democrats and immigrant advocates have chastised the mayor for his comments. “The mayor should know better. The contributions of the immigrant community here have been seismic,” said New York Immigration Coalition executive director Murad Awawdeh.

The “A Lot” rapper later alleged that he was personally also targeted in the operation. After his arrest, ICE revealed that 21 Savage is a national who has been in the United States unlawfully since his non-immigrant visa expired in July 2006.

The celebrity gossip website has obtained some of the legal documents regarding the case and say Savage has asked that all the evidence obtained at the scene be tossed out because it was an unlawful traffic stop. As far the weapon police claim was thrown from the vehicle his legal team says “there was no illegality for the weapon to be in the car.”

The case is still pending as he faces charges of drugs and gun possession and faces deportation if found guilty.

According to reports, a city employee in a building near the scene heard a cry for help around 6 P.M. Monday night (June 27th). They found the truck with the trailer doors partially opened and saw the bodies of the deceased inside, prompting them to call the police. According to authorities, forty-eight people died on the scene and two would pass away later after being taken to an area hospital. Sixteen other people – twelve adults and four children – were found alive and rushed to medical facilities. A federal law enforcement official said to the press that there were at least 22 Mexican nationals, seven Guatemalan citizens, and two from Honduras among the dead in what they termed “an alleged human smuggling event”.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said that the refrigerator tractor-trailer had no working air-conditioning unit, and those surviving patients were hot to the touch and suffering from heatstroke. “None of these people were able to extricate themselves out of the truck,” Hood said at the press conference held later that evening. “So they were still in there, awaiting help when we arrived … meaning just being too weak — weakened state — to actually get out and help themselves.” The city is currently in the midst of high temperatures ranging from the high 90s to the low 100s.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott quickly issued a statement on Twitter placing blame on President Joe Biden for the incident. “These deaths are on Biden. They are a result of his deadly open border policies,” he wrote.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said that the incident was “nothing short of a horrific human tragedy.” Three other people had been detained a short distance from the scene, and the investigation is now being led by federal authorities including the Customs and Border Patrol. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas issued a tweet offering his condolences for those lives lost, writing: “I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of life today and am praying for those still fighting for their lives. Far too many lives have been lost as individuals – including families, women, and children – take this dangerous journey.”

Evoking a scene that could rightfully be compared to the horrors inflicted on enslaved Black people in the United States, a photograph of a Border Patrol agent using a whip to chase down a Haitian migrant published on Monday (September 20) has caused significant outrage across the nation.

The startling picture, one of many taken by Agence France-Presse photographer Paul Ratje along with video footage shows agents with the Border Patrol using cords of rope as whips to stop hundreds of Haitian migrants from crossing the Rio Grande River from Mexico into Texas near the town of Del Rio. According to local reporting, Border Patrol agents were heard yelling “Get out now! Back to Mexico!” at the migrants, forcing them back through the water. The migrants have been making their way to the U.S. border in the wake of the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and an earthquake killing over 2,000 people last month seeking asylum under the Temporary Protected Status designation for refugees. It’s estimated that over 14,000 Haitians are currently being detained in a makeshift camp under a bridge in Del Rio awaiting processing by the Border Patrol.

The Department of Homeland Security has announced an investigation is underway into the incident, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has assigned officials from the Office of Professional Responsibility to be at Del Rio on a full-time basis “to ensure that the responsibilities of DHS personnel are executed consistent with applicable policies and training and the department’s values,” said a spokesperson with the agency. In the meantime, the fate of the Haitian migrants is still in question as the Biden administration has now initiated mass deportation using a Trump-era rule. Over the past weekend, 3,300 were taken from the area and placed in detention centers elsewhere or flown back to Haiti. Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS) blasted the photos as “horrific and disturbing”, further stating to the press that “This mistreatment runs counter to our American values and cannot be tolerated.”

“The IG assured Mr President and Nigerians that he is going to work assiduously to ensure that the responsibilities assigned to him are brought to bear and executed to the best of his abilities and to the satisfaction of all Nigerians.”

Baba, on his part said he briefed the council on the threat to national security across the six geo political zone, stating zones peculiarities.

He said: “There are peculiarities, like i said before, in the South East and south south is the issue of secessionist agenda championed by IPOB, I also talked about terrorism and religious bigotry in the North East. I also talked about the issue of kidnapping, armed robbery, Banditry and cultism as it affects the North Central and North West and South West. I gave a synopsis in terms of what we are doing to address this situation. I also thanked Mr President for providing additional logistics in terms of carrying out our duties and responsibilities.

“In collaboration with other security agencies, we try to checkmate other forms of lawlessness, criminality and unlawful agitation in order to ensure lives and property are saved and at the same time allow Nigerian citizens go about their lawful business.

“What is seriously worrisome in the South East, but it is gradually being checked and results are positive as regards the attacks and killings of security agents and assets belonging to the federal government. Our ability to checkmate this lawlessness has improved and we are getting closer to something positive.

“We also acknowledge the fact that there are some things that have been done by the federal government to improve police operations ranging from the establishment of the Police Trust fund, signing into law of the 2020 Police Act and several other intervention funds, necessary technology and intelligence led policing will be a reality.

“I briefed Council on adding to our strengths in terms of recruitment for 2020 and 2021 as this will assist us. I also briefed the council on community policing which has taken off in all the states and how the community police officers are assisting in providing security in their communities because, their operations are restricted to their immediate community.

“I briefed Council on the number of arrests we have made and recoveries in terms of firearms and weaponry that are being used lawlessly. I briefed council on rescue of kidnapped victims and what we are doing to secure the school children that have been kidnapped and how we are going about securing those in schools.”

On if police was ensuring that political thugs are not meted the same punishment as IPOB members in the South East, Baba said: “How do I differentiate between political thugs and IPOb? I don’t even need to differentiate them. The issue is, I’m looking for anybody who has committed offence or anybody who belongs to a proscribed organisation. So, the issue is it all depends on the level of criminality or lawlessness that someone does to know what punishment will be meted on him. If a political thug that commits crime he is in for it as a principal offender, if someone is sponsoring him either aiding or abetting him, conspiring with him they will be taken together.

“The issue is IPOB is a proscribed organisation and we expect nobody to belong to the IPOB. Thuggery is an offence and anyone will be dealt with according to the law. There are all offenders. It’s just like me differencing between an armed robber and a thug. It’s the level of crime that matters. There is no way we can say this is IPOB or a thug it all depends on the level of crime.”

On the alarm raiser by South West leaders on invasion by foreign herdsmen, the IGP said it is being taken seriously.

“Its a statement that will not be taken lightly, we are looking into it based on intelligence available to us we will deal with the situation and those who are making the statement are also at liberty by national calling to substantiate to the nearest police station.

“It is not today we have been hearing of foreigners coming into commit one crime or the other and in some instances, there are real incidence that some people that were arrested are not really Nigerians. It is not a new thing and whatever level of security we need to provide we are doing it. We have border patrol police, immigration are doing their jobs in terms of checking illegal aliens. It is possible but it is not as light as invasion, that word is very strong, we will look into it if actually it is true.”

The director-general, Cross River Migration Control Agency, Prince Michael Nku Abuo, has called for enactment of a legislation to back labour migration in order to engender national development.

Abuo made the call at the Cross River State Migration Summit held in Calabar, the state capital on Saturday.

The DG, who also represented the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, at the summit, pointed out that several solutions by both federal and state governments have been given to address the issue of unemployment in order to curb the challenge, but the way forward is to tackle the menace was through labour migration.

According to him, Cross River Migration Control Agency was exploring and advancing for opportunities for citizens of the State who are at home and in the Diaspora under a work study programme that will give access to student loans and jobs, and at the end come back to the State to inject their expertise in developing various sectors of the state economy as part of developing human capital resources.

He also added that as unemployment continue to soar high based on the report received from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which as at March 15, 2021 stood at 33.3 per cent or 23,233,333 million Nigerians are unemployed including 15.9 million underemployed Nigerians, that puts the nation under serious time-bomb, and this will trigger more migration and brain-drain.

The summit had in attendance, the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Festus Keyamo (SAN); chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Adamu Mohammed Bulkachuwa; His Royal Highness, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V; deputy vice chancellor (Administration), University of Calabar, Prof Mike Okom; Rev Dr A. K. Ocansey; Prof Bryon Price; Ms Susan Gong; the representatives of the government and people of Oyo and Benue States, Hon Bonlanle Sarumi and Hon Emmanuel Doughough respectively.

Others include partners, International Organisation for Migration and the President and members of JIFORM, the Director-General, National Directorate of Employment, NDE, Abubakar Nuhu Fikpo; the Director General, NAPTIP, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; the DSS, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mohammed Babadede; Cross River Broadcasting Corporation, (CRBC), and Correct FM.

Abuo said: “It is true that there are challenges and concerns of human trafficking, modern day slavery and abuse or human resource drain etc but these challenges and concern can be addressed with adequate legislation, feedback and follow up mechanisms, sanctions and sensitization and awareness creation.

“It is this passion to raise awareness that led to the Governor even before creating this agency to make MIGRATION the theme of an episode of our Africa’s Biggest Street Party.

“Rather than having people explore deadly avenues/means and offer themselves to be trafficked we can and should legislate, facilitate legitimate alternatives which can and should be monitored.

“It is in this regards that we are setting up modalities to facilitate towards regular labour migration within and outside the state via our skilled migrant programme.

“With this initiative in partnership with reputable organizations we will create a job centre and facilitate admissions for first degree holders in the area of Science (Social and Pure Science), Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to study for their Master’s in the EU, Canada and United States under a work study program that will give the access to student loans and jobs. In addition we will also facilitate our indigenes to gain more skills and link up those with skills to where it is needed globally not just in the gulf nation.”

However, he noted that, “This thought and action as ambitious and daring as it sounds is doable and not a single person from our state under this scheme will be keyed into any initiative where they will be exploited and that goes against global best practices or and breaches our constitution.

“This move and is implication is beyond just Cross River State but this template if implemented and replicated is one that will boost our nation’s foreign reserves in billions of dollars as proven by remissions in tens of billions made by our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora and create millions of jobs as well.”

Meanwhile, explaining the vision and mission behind the creation of the Cross River State Migration Control Agency, which is first of its kind in Nigeria and also the first sub-regional agency set up to address the issue of migration not only in Nigeria but Africa, he said it was the brainchild of the Ayade-led administration in the state.

“The agency was, therefore, primarily created to coordinate, provide and explore opportunities within and outside the state/country to regulate the move of our people in quest of economical survival, address concerns of IDPs, street kids, refugees, work out anti trafficking measures and irregular migrant concerns within the state.

“So far within a year and few months our agency have made progress by ensuring we create access to opportunities for almost 10,000 persons, yes 10, 000 under different schemes/initiatives, we have documented evidence for this, this would not have been possible without my 34 adhoc staffs and team members working in my office.

“These 10,000 and more are geared at providing economic opportunities for our people and this is the hallmark of the Sen Prof Ben Ayade led administration, in addition to the above he has appointed over 5, 000 persons comprising of Cross Riverians and non indigenes and have created agro-processing industrial layouts across the state such as a cocoa, pharmaceutical, rice, groundnut, chicken and noodles factories and of course a garment factory employing over 2, 000 persons. Mostly youths are the beneficiaries of this scheme,” he stated.

For his part, Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Barr. Festus Keyamo, said traveling abroad for greener pasture is a personal decision and a right of citizens as far as it’s for genuine cause, and such cannot be stopped.

But he also pointed out that there are persons who are also migrating to Nigeria for greener pastures and are well documented including Lebanese, Chinese and others for legitimate businesses.

“You cannot stop people from wanting to go abroad because there are people who genuinely want to travel.

“As Nigerians are going abroad for greener pastures, people are also coming here for greener pastures like many documented workers who are Lebanese, Chinese, and others.

“We must, however, improve on our provision of decent jobs and stop slavery in the name of work in Nigeria, so as to reduce the excessive desperation to go abroad even as an illegal immigrant,” he said.

Also speaking, the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa, called for control of 21st century migration, and said Nigerians traveling abroad should be good ambassadors of the country in the their host countries.

“Any Nigerian leaving this country must be prepared to obey the laws of the land he or she is traveling to, because there is nothing the federal government can do other than appeal if they break the law and are arrested.

“If the Nigerian mission doesn’t help Nigerians in the Diaspora, it is not because they don’t want to, but because they see that the Nigerian truly broke the laws of the land, all they can do is get a good lawyer to defend the Nigerian or beg,” Bulkachuwa said.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has raised alarm over the alleged massive arrest of Igbo youths by the Nigerian army and taken to unknown destinations.

Ohanaeze said the mass arrest is going on in Ohaji and Oguta Communities of Imo State by military personnel believed to be from 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri.

The arrested youths were alleged to be members of Eastern Security Network, ESN, according to the apex Igbo group.

Ohanaeze wondered why the army were arresting Igbo youths who bear no arms and allow Fulani herdsmen to move around with AK 47 riffles.

They called on the Chief of army staff to immediately stop the mass arrests.

The Professor George Obiozor led Ohanaeze in a statement signed by its spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia said: “The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to ongoing massive arrests of Igbo youths by the Nigerian Army.

The report indicates that “the military personnel, suspected to be led by the 34 Artillery Brigade, Owerri since Sunday have been arresting male residents and youths, particularly in Oguta and Ohaji communities and clamping them into vans and taken to unknown destinations”.

“The report adds that the army are “busy, carrying out raids, discreet searches and arrests of youths and residents who are suspected to be linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its security arm, the Eastern Security Network”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Ambassador Prof. George Obiozor is unequivocal about the use of firearms by unauthorized persons, bodies or groups. Democracy, all over the world vests the absolute authority for the legitimate use of force in government. We had admonished that the exclusive indulgence of AK 47 to the Fulani herdsmen as canvassed by Governor Bala Mohammed is antithetical to the ethos of a decent society.

“For the armed forces to arrest the Igbo youths without evidence of arms, means of violence or crime is cowardly, uncivilized and mostly unacceptable to Ohanaeze Ndigbo. It runs contrary to every sense of natural justice and rights of citizenship for the army to invade some Igbo communities in search of youths; most of whom are brilliant university graduates whose society has denied employment and sense of belonging. This is adding salt to festering injury.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo does not just wax lyrical about Igbo youths of all categories or dispositions.

“We condemn crime irrespective of the source. On the other hand, we stand on a firm wicket that it is ruthless to arrest any Igbo in the guise of membership of a terrorist organization unless there is sufficient evidence of crime or unlawful possession of firearms.

“We call on the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru to urgently stop the wave of arrests before it gives impetus to the proposal by the United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to offer asylum to person who actively and openly supports IPOB and likely to be at risk of arrest or detention, and ill-treatment which is likely to amount to persecution”.

The United States authorities have charged 48-year old Modestus Nwagubwu Ifemembi to court over fraudulent claims he provided to obtain the US citizenship 10 years back.

Ifemembi, who secured his US citizenship in 2001, has worked as a Federal providers’ officer with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for seven years.

According to a report by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Ifemembi, originally of Nigeria, was arrested in Maryland on Wednesday, April 7, 2020, on a federal charge that he obtained U.S. citizenship under a false name. It added that he made false statements to acquire U.S. citizenship, in addition to employment with USCIS.

The report disclosed that Ifemembi was charged under the false name of Karl Nwabugwu Odike Ifemembi.

His arrest followed investigation by federal agents. In the course of investigation, the release stated that US federal investigators visited Nigeria. They also searched his Orange County residence in 2019, obtaining evidence about his true identity; including baptism, school and financial records

Newsmen learnt from the statement of complaints against Ifemembi, that he was alleged to have first entered the United States in 2000 on a flight from France to Chicago using a stolen British passport that he had altered with his own photo.

While Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) officials detected the fraud, which Ifemembi admitted when confronted, he was however granted asylum after he falsely claimed that his real name was “Karlos Mourfy” of Sierra Leone.

After being granted asylum, Ifemembi secured admission into the University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a bachelor’s diploma in 2004 and subsequently “obtained J.D. from the College of Oregon, College of Legislation”.

The charges further stated that Ifemembi, still posing as “Karlos Mourfy”, after obtaining asylum was able to adjust status to lawful permanent resident (green card) and applied for U.S. citizenship in 2010.

At the time of applying to naturalize, he requested to have his name changed to “Karlos Ifemembi”. His U.S. citizenship and name change were approved in May 2011.

The story got worse for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the agency responsible for administering the United States lawful immigration system. Not only was Ifemembi able to dupe adjudicators to obtain multiple immigration benefits, the agency subsequently hired him in 2013 as an immigration services officer.

The 48-year-old Nigerian, who relocated to Rockville, Maryland in 2020, faces a one-count charge of unlawfully procuring U.S. citizenship.

He faces a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, and upon conviction; his US citizenship will be automatically revoked.
