Ice Cube backs DOGE and an ‘incredible and historical’ transaction

Iconic rapper Ice Cube — also known as O’Shea Jackson Sr. — has jumped on the Dogecoin (DOGE) bandwagon with his endorsement of an “incredible and historical” DOGE transaction. Cube’s entry into the wild world of Dogecoin is related to the BIG3 basketball league that he co-founded. The organization predominantly features former NBA stars in a three-on-three format as opposed to the regular five-on-five basketball games. Last month, the BIG3 launched a new ownership model for the league, which consists of selling tokenized stakes in each of the 12 teams. There are 1000 nonfungible tokens (NFTs) in total allocated to each team, with 25 “Fire” NFTs worth $25,000 a pop and 975 “Gold” NFTs at $5,000 each. On Wednesday, MyDoge wallet co-founder Bill Lee tweeted at Ice Cube saying “if ya dig DOGE...

Ice Cube Sets The Record Straight On ‘Friday’, Chris Tucker & How He ‘Didn’t Rob No F*ckin’ Body’

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Michael Hurcomb / Getty If you’re a fan of the 1995 classic comedy Friday, you’ve probably wondered why one of the film’s most notable stars, comedian Chris Tucker, who played the character “Smokey,” wasn’t in any of the sequels. Well, on Wednesday, legendary rapper and Friday creator Ice Cube said his piece on the subject after comedian Faizon Love, who played “Big Worm” in the movie, talked about how little the actors in the film got paid—which, of course, he went about in his usual messy way. According to HypeBeast, Friday “was dubbed as a cultural phenomenon and grossed over nine times its budget of $3 million USD. At the box office, it made over $27 million USD,” which paved the way for sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next. It’s worth mentioning...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: David Becker / Getty You can’t say Ice Cube isn’t a man who stands on his principles, no matter how debatable or questionable they may be. The rapper turned actor and mogul has reportedly left a Sony comedy called Oh Hell No over his refusal to take a COVID-19 vaccine. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ice Cube will be missing out on a $9 million dollar payday thanks to his decision to curve getting vaccinated. Cube, born O’Shea Jackson, would have been starring opposite Jack Black. Reportedly, Black and Cube partnered on the project back in June with filming to down over the winter in Hawaii. However, producers asking that the cast be vaccinated has nixed those plans. Black is still attached to the film but neither he, nor Cube’s people or Sony ...

Ice Cube Leaves Comedy Film After Refusing COVID Vaccine

Ice Cube has departed the production of the upcoming film Oh Hell No, in which he was set to co-star with Jack Black, after refusing to get a COVID vaccine. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Sony had no comment on Ice Cube’s exit, and that neither the personal representative for the hip-hop star nor his agency, WME, would comment. The Sony film was set to shoot this winter in Hawaii, and the producers required the whole cast to be vaccinated. This is the second film that Ice Cube has walked away from this year, as he left the forthcoming boxing film Flint Strong, but for unclear reasons. Ice Cube himself has promoted mask-wearing throughout the pandemic. A couple of months into the lockdown, the rapper released “Check Yo Self Before You Wreck Yo Self” branded merchandise, with...

Ice Cube Details Nasty Beef With Studio Over ‘Last Friday’ Sequel

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Bernard Smalls / @PhotosByBeanz83 If you’re looking forward to ever seeing Last Friday, you may have to wait until the literal last Friday in existence, if it’s meant to be.   According to the Wall Street Journal, Ice Cube and Warner Bros., the studio that owns the rights to the Friday franchise, are at an impasse over its fourth and reported final film of the celebrated series. The film’s creator and the studio have been going back and forth over the many weeks via nasty letters rooted in gross creative differences, unreasonable demands, and even allegations of discrimination. Indie Wire reports that the whole beef started when Warner Bros. made too many demands for script changes that Ice Cube didn’t take too kindly to. The film was originally set ...

Sir Jinx, Producer For Ice Cube, Sues Rapper Over Unpaid Royalties

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Michael Tran / Getty Ice Cube has a number of undeniable classic tracks in his catalog and Sir Jinx was responsible for adding his touches to the production of the tracks. Now, Jinx believes he’s owed adjusted royalties and has sued Cube for the unpaid monies but there might be some resistance in the way. TMZ reports that Sir Jinx has filed suit against his past collaborator in Ice Cube, notably working with the rapper and actor on his early solo work beginning in 1990. Jinx, real name Anthony Wheaton, says that Cube, real name O’Shea Jackson, examined his royalty statements back in 2019 and felt that he was being underpaid. According to the outlet, JInx reached out to Cube’s side to hopefully get things back on track but it appears that talks have stalle...

Robinhood Responds To Ice Cube’s Lawsuit

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Carlo Allegri / Getty Ice Cube may not be out in these streets bringing drama to the ops, but the N.W.A. OG is damn sure taking them to court for getting outta pocket. According to AllHiphop, Cube has filed a lawsuit against the financial services app, Robinhood, for using his likeness and lyrics without his permission. In a suit filed on March 31, Cube accused Robinhood of robbin’ his image in an ad for their new service, Robinhood Snacks. To add insult to injury the ad even featured some of Cube’s lyrics remixed into fitting their format and read “Correct yourself, before you wreck yourself.” An obvious reference to Cube’s hit “Check Yo Self.” Last week Robinhood replied to Cube’s allegations and suggested Cube had no grounds to stand on as they’re prot...

#FreeFriday ?: Ice Cube Accuses Warner Bros. Of Halting ‘Friday’ Franchise

Source: Ray Mickshaw / Getty West Coast legend Ice Cube may have made headlines for attempting to negotiate on behalf of Black America. Still, it appears his contract with Warner Bros. is what needed the closer examination. According to Cube, production studio Warner Bros. is pumping the breaks on his Friday franchise’s success by refusing to produce any further content bearing the cult classic’s name. On Friday (Feb 26), the “Good Day” rapper took to Instagram to air out the production house for “hi-jacking the happiness of the culture,” after noting that the company has refused to make more sequels for the film. “#freefriday from the jaws of Warner Bros. who refuses to make more sequels,” Ice Cube wrote. “They have hi-jacked the happiness of the culture.” While the Bootleg...

Ice Cube To Meet With Joe Biden To Discuss “Contract With Black America”

Source: NBC / Getty Right before last year’s Presidential elections Ice Cube caught the wrath of the culture when Donald Trump’s camp revealed they were allegedly working with the Hip-Hop icon on his “Contract With Black America.” Though Cube defended himself and explained he wasn’t supporting Trump’s re-election and only spoke to the Trump administration after the Biden camp passed on a meeting, everyone felt that he was ultimately used by Trump to help him get some of the Black vote in the coming elections. Now that the former Racist-In-Chief is out of office and the Biden Harris administration is in full swing, TMZ is reporting that Cube will indeed be meeting with the new Head of State to discuss the contract he’s been pitching for a while now. During an interview with Ryan Cameron for...

Ranking John Carpenter: Every Movie from Worst to Best

Dark streets, empty lawns, singing trees, and the nauseating pulse of synths — you’re watching a John Carpenter film. Chances are the Master of Horror was responsible for a few of your earliest childhood nightmares. He’s more or less the Ray Bradbury of filmmaking, an underrated visionary who can conjure up a brand of fear that’s both out of this world and within your reach. Six years after returning to the synthesizer for 2015’s Lost Themes, the Master of Horror is back for more with its second sequel: Lost Themes III: Alive After Death. Once again, Carpenter is working alongside his son Cody Carpenter and his godson Daniel Davies, a collaboration that’s only grown stronger with time. “We’ve matured,” Carpenter has confidently expressed. In celebration, we’ve resurrected this original bre...
