Ffos Las Racecourse stages its most famous race, the 2m Welsh Champion Hurdle (4:35), on Saturday, 16 October. Located in the west of the Principality, the track often has deep ground but not this year. Changes to Ffos Las fixtures including this limited handicap hurdle saw the date and distance of the race altered for the 2016-17 season. The Welsh Champion Hurdle moved from late January or early February to this middle of October slot then. Previous Ffos Las results saw the race contested over 2m 4f, but this event is now about two miles. When looking at trends, only the last five Welsh Champion Hurdle winners are really relevant as a result. Since the alterations to Ffos Las races were made, each successful horse in this took it after a summer break. Four of the last five Welsh Champion ...
William Buick and his bid to win the UK Flat Jockeys Championship 2021 from Oisin Murphy goes down to the final day, British Champions Day. Retained by powerful global owners Godolphin, Buick has enjoyed a number of rides outside the Charlie Appleby operation in Newmarket during recent weeks and months. Murphy, a two-time winner of the British Flat Jockeys Championship himself, rode a double at Haydock on Friday ahead of the Ascot finale that puts him three ahead of his rival. There are more William Buick rides on British Champions Day than Murphy mounts on the card. Trailing 153-150 going into the final day of competition, the Flat Jockeys Champions odds heavily favour the Irishman completing his hat-trick. This is because of a paucity of fancied runners for both riders. Murphy has made h...

On British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday, 16 October, the 1m 2f QIPCO Champions Stakes is the headline middle-distance race (3:50). It is also the penultimate event on a stellar card of Flat horse racing. Frankel, Cracksman and Magical are all recent Champion Stakes winners. Transferred to Ascot from Newmarket in 2011, older horses have done so well in the race lately. In fact, only two three-year-old have won this since 2008. Horses prominent in the Champion Stakes betting have a great record. Of the last nine victors, none were bigger than 10/1. Four of the last five favourites obliged too. QIPCO British Champions Day is one of the biggest Flat horse racing meetings in the UK. The Balmoral Handicap apart, the other five races on the card bring the British Champions Series to an end. In the 1m 2f Champion Stakes afterwards, Mishriff tackles Adayar in another battle between generations. This lies at the heart of all Flat turf horse racing in Britain. Here, the SportsLens experts look at the QIPCO British Champions Day supporting card with selections for three other Group races. QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup (1:25) A mu...
