Why ‘White Christmas’ Struck a Chord In WWII: ‘Hollywood Victory’ Book Excerpt

By October 31 it was number one on Billboard. And it stayed there until Tommy Dorsey’s “There Are Such Things” dethroned it on January 16, though it would top the charts again over the holidays in following years. On November 16 it also topped the CBS radio show Your Hit Parade’s weekly chart of the nation’s most popular songs and would remain at number one for an unprecedented ten weeks. Not a carol exactly, certainly not a religious song, “White Christmas” brought nostalgia into mainstream culture like nothing else ever quite had. It was inevitable then that it became the biggest single of all time—fifty million recordings sold of both the 1942 version and Crosby’s 1947 rerecording, which was necessary because the master cylinder of the original was nearly worn down, it had been copied s...

Coronavirus takes toll on federal roads’ construction in Lagos

The ravaging effect of Coronavirus (COVID-19) was, perhaps, the biggest challenge faced by stakeholders in the road sub sector of the construction industry in 2020. As the virus gained ground, several contractors soon abandoned work and shut their operations, consequently, many hitherto gainfully employed Nigerians were thrown into the labour market. Even when the government later introduced partial lockdown measures, the number of workers on site was scaled down by many contractors in line with COVID-19 protocols, which slowed down progress of work. Virtually all road projects in Lagos State suffered the effect of the pandemic, with every project having its own peculiar challenge. The reconstruction of 46km Agbara-Seme section of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway project awarded to CGC Nigeria...
