Prior to his recent world super-middleweight title fight, the Mexican boxing champion walked out to the ring in formidable fashion, bringing out Latin music superstar J Balvin to pump him up and scare the poo out of Turkish challenger Avni Yildirim. J Balvin performed a live rendition of his global smash hit “Mi Gente,” opting to use a remix by none other than Henry Fong, whose roaring moombahton version set the tone for a locked-in, vein-popping Alvarez. Who knew the nostalgia of drive-in movie theaters would end up being reincarnated by the dance music community? As promoters and artists look for creative ways to connect with fans in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which effectively crumpled the live music industry, drive-in raves have emerged as a very popular alternative. The city of San Antonio is the latest to join the trend after a team of promoters announced their “EDM Drive-In” on June 26th and 27th, a vehicle-based festival at Freeman Coliseum. A bevy of dance music artists, producers, and vocalists have teamed up with renowned music production marketplace Cymatics to craft an expansive sample pack in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The bundle, titled “Hearts Vol. 2,” features contributions from Excision, KSHMR, Dion Timmer, Dubloadz, Dirty Audio, Leah Culver, Henry Fong, IVEEN, PhaseOne, Graves, OTR, Slow Magic, Ramzoid, Jameston Thieves, and Laxcity, among others. 100% of the proceeds from the sample pack will be donated to three organizations fighting for racial justice and equality amid nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd.
