Today, there are two types of people walking around: Those willing to wear a mask to help prevent the spread of a deadly virus in COVID-19, and the unconscionable, who, either citing their natural-born freedoms or their political fealties, refuse to don any sort of a face covering, even during a pandemic that — let’s face it — was preventable. Yet, there’s still widespread mask resistance all across America — something that boggles the minds of masked musicians everywhere. When you consider there are several bands whose members spend hours on sun-drenched stages, performing in stifling latex, suppressing silicone, repressive nylon, and restricting mesh masks that typically envelop their entire faces, sporting a soft surgical mask for a few lousy minutes while pumping gas or getting groceri...
GWAR singer Blöthar the Berserker detailed the melodic focus that informed their recent unplugged session with The AV Club, telling CNN, “The focus is more on harmony and more on melody than it is on rhythm and aggression, and the same thing is true for the voice.” The metal band’s recent, home-recorded mini-set — part of the publication’s AVC Sessions: House Shows series — featured acoustic strums, hard rock belting, and plenty of stuffed animals. And that format, the Berserker said, allowed a different vantage point to survey their songs. “It has some depth, as far as harmonic progressions go,” he notes. “Most heavy metal does. Most hard rock does.” The vocalist, calling GWAR the “all-time heavyweight champions” of AV Club’s cover song contest series, also detailed recording th...
After days after a Change.org petition encouraged the city of Richmond to take down the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and replace it with late GWAR singer Oderus Urungus, a member of the band went down to scope things. JiZMak Da Gusha headed down to the site of the statue to check things out. In typical GWAR fashion, Da Gusha had some stuff to stay, mostly praising the work that protestors did to it. “You see this? This is great,” Da Gusha said. “I’m critiquing the artwork and it’s looking pretty great right now!” After an onlooker said, “aren’t you going up there?” Da Gusha reminded folks about the petition going around to get GWAR ride atop of the horse instead of Lee’s place. “I strongly encourage that everyone signs that petition online,” he said. “Fuck that guy.” “Robe...
GWAR have been their usual unusual selves during quarantine. They’ve appeared on CNN giving an update to pandemic life, encouraged fans to drink bleach (as a joke of course) and popped up in a Frank Iero video. That said, as statues of Confederate leaders and other historically problematic figures are being torn down and replaced worldwide, GWAR fans have a request. A new petition is circulating the web, calling for a statue of GWAR’s late leader Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) to replace a preexisting statue of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, which is also the band’s hometown. While the notion of taking down statues shouldn’t come as a surprise after one of slave-trader Edward Colston was tossed into a river in England and a Christopher Columbus s...
