Vulture has been doing this “Superlatives” series on and off for a while now, where they ask artists about their favorites and least favorites among their own music and mostly get very expected results. But their most recent one from last week caused quite a stir when Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong stated that he felt that “Jesus of Suburbia” is the best Green Day song. “It’s so epic,” Armstrong said. “I mean, I’m tooting my own horn, but I think it encompasses so much about my life and friendship and family, and it’s flamboyant and big and bombastic. It’s one of those moments where I was feeling like I wanted to take a big risk. It’s so fun to play live, seeing how the entire crowd sings along. It’s just one of those songs.” Regardless of what your opinions on Green Day are, i...

The Network made its comeback last year with Money Money 2020 Part II: Told Ya So! — its first album in more than 15 years — and on Friday night, Green Day’s “secret” band took the new material to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Though it’s common knowledge that Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt are at the new wave group’s core, they obscure their faces to hide their identities and go by the names Fink, Snoo and Van Gough, respectively (it’s all part of the act). The masked musicians played “Threat Level Midnight” (you know, like that infamous Michael Scott “film” from The Office) from a remote location that they turned into their own ’70s-era talk show set, complete with their own host. Fink began the performance by smashing a glass in his hand, and...
Music in general is too rarely inspirational. It has too often become the white noise we shove into the background as we scan social media feeds. If music is a savior that pulls us together, we’ll need to embrace the resurrection of the almighty concept album. They fill in the small pixels that complete the big picture, and sometimes inspire other musicians to elevate their game. If you said Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles, you are wrong. But you may also be right. That’s because the term “concept album” is rather ambiguous. In its most generic form, it’s an album where all the songs adhere to a certain theme or concept. The purists, however, will tell you that it maintains a cohesive theme via a narrative of some sort. Hip hop artist Deacon The Villain describes them ...
Green Day have been the masters of side projects. They have their garage rock project, Foxboro Hot Tubs, and if you can remember far back enough, a new wave outfit called the Network. The latter had been dormant for 15 years until they dropped a new EP titled Trans Am. The four songs are short, like really short. But they’re a 10-minute precursor to a new album that will be out in a few weeks. The last time this project was active, they released Money Money 2020 in 2003, and an expanded version of that collection a year later. In an Instagram post, the group promised to release a new album titled Money Money 2020 Part II: Told Ya So! As for this EP, lyrically, it mocks right-wing conspiracy mongers and those who believe in them. Listen to the EP below. You Deserve to Make Money Even When y...
The year 2000 looms large in pop culture history: the Y2k non-scare, the Seinfeld “Newmannium” episode, the “In the Year 2000″ sketch from Conan O’Brien’s original late-night show, the Hulu series PEN15. And just like, say, the grunge-defined 1991, the year immediately conjures specific sounds: gleaming teen-pop, earnest radio rock, the Neptunes and Timbaland. There’s never a bad time to revisit this music. But in the middle of a pandemic, with America on the verge of collapse, it feels extra comforting — a blast of nostalgia for a time when you could safely exit your home, visit your local mall’s Sam Goody and buy Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” CD single. For this list, our only criteria was that the songs appear on albums or soundtracks released in 2000. Here we go. 50. Papa Roach, “Last Reso...
James Gandolfini was a big Green Day fan. Surprised? Don’t be. According to Michael Imperioli — who played Christopher Moltisanti opposite Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano on the HBO mob drama — detailed the late actor’s on-set listening habits in the comments of a recent Instagram post, as Stereogum reports. And Dookie, the band’s 1994 alt-punk classic, was apparently a staple for the venerated Emmy winner. The posted photo shows the two actors at a 2005 fundraiser, with Gandolfini signing an electric guitar. Fittingly, someone in the comments asked about the star’s music taste, and Imperioli replied, “Green Day,” adding, “he would play the vinyl of dookie in his trailer at work. Totally serious.” He added, “no joke. He loved Green Day....
Billie Joe Armstrong has had enough of non-fans asking for photos. In a new interview with Kerrang!, the Green Day star opened up about fame, mental health, and his opinions on social media. “Sometimes it’s great,” the rock legend said of fame. “When I’m able to communicate with fans and people are cool, and when people get something out of the music and you make these connections. But I think the thing that makes it uncomfortable is how fucked-up social media has become, and how everyone’s got a camera in their pocket now. There are a lot of people out there who aren’t fans who just wanna be guilty by association or something. They wanna hold you in their pocket as a souvenir. And I think that sometimes that’s the part that gets annoying.” The Kerrang! Cover StoryBillie ...
