In a recent interview, six-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kacey Musgraves spilled the tea on the influences behind her forthcoming feature-length album, due later this year. In the mix for the country queen was a guided magic mushroom trip at the beginning of 2021. Her takeaway? “Less time for bullshit,” Musgraves told ELLE. “I am so repelled by the artificial, the chatter, the pressures of society. It doesn’t matter. We’re not here for very long.” In addition to psilocybin, the Texas native revealed an eclectic group of musical influences for the project, including legendary electronic music duo Daft Punk. “I feel like I don’t belong to country in any way on one hand, but on the other hand, I’m deeply rooted in that genre. So I’m not owned by ...

Despite calling for that very change in March, the artist born Abel Tesfaye is doubling down on his Grammy critiques, telling Variety that the rule changes are an “admission of corruption.” Tesfaye’s crusade against the Recording Academy actually began last year, when he was shut out of all Grammy categories despite releasing one of the most critically-lauded, commercially-successful albums of 2020 in After Hours. His rhetoric escalated in March when he announ...
Harsh criticism toward the Grammy Awards ceremony from pop superstar The Weeknd has led the Recording Academy to reconsider its nomination process. After The Weeknd—the world’s second most-streamed artist on Spotify—was snubbed at last year’s ceremony, the artist called for increased transparency around the organization’s nomination process. The Recording Academy has taken that criticism into consideration and will now forgo using anonymous review committees to determine its nominees. The Academy has also changed the number of categories in which Academy members can vote, and added two additional award categories. With the changes, the Academy seeks to “reflect its ongoing commitment to evolve with the musical landscape and to ensure that the GRAMMY Awards...
<span class="localtime" data-ltformat="F j, Y | g:ia" data-lttime="2021-05-01T16:20:21+00:00“>May 1, 2021 | 12:20pm ET The Recording Academy has announced a series of reforms designed to make the Grammy Awards more transparent while reducing future controversies. Via Billboard and Variety, the biggest change is the almost total elimination of the secret nominating committees which determine who is eligible to receive the awards. The Academy has also reduced the number of categories in which members may vote, added two new categories, and rolled out a reorganization of the “craft” categories (packaging, producer, and liner notes). The secretive nomination committees has long been a point of contention, in part because, since nobody knows who they ar...

However, the company has since removed the BTS sticker from the set following swift backlash over the insensitive depiction of the K-pop stars amidst a rise in anti-Asian violence. The Garage Pail Kids are a long-running series spoofing and satirizing Cabbage Patch dolls by drawing characters in negative, often violent or vulgar situations. Music’s Biggest Night put on one hell of a concert, but unfortunately not a lot of people watched it go down. According to Nielsen figures, the 2021 Grammy Awards ratings experienced a huge drop in viewership this year, with only 7.89 million viewers tuning in to watch the show. That’s less than half (!) of the number of people who watched the Grammys in 2020. Out of that nearly eight million estimate, the 2021 Grammy Awards only drew a 1.9 rating among adults aged 18 to 49 years old — their key demographic and the audience that they court the hardest each year. By comparison, the 2020 awards averaged about 16.54 million viewers and a 4.8 in that same age group. And to think, that was before adjusting the ratings to their official (but still paltry) 18.69 million viewers and 5.4 rating amo...
