Governors Ball’s 2023 Lineup One Day Later: Highlights, Lowlights, Surprises, and Omissions

New York City festivals are always tricky. Not only is there a general lack of large, open fields ripe for thousands of festival goers, it’s difficult to compile a music festival that aligns with the city’s fusion of cultural identities. Governors Ball has been adamant about offering both components in their 10+ year history, and their 2023 lineup, announced on Tuesday, January 17th, is a testament to that mission. With Kendrick Lamar, Lizzo, and ODESZA topping the bill this year, Governors Ball is taking after their older festival siblings by prioritizing unique, global, and must-see artists. Though you can catch an act like ODESZA at virtually any other North American festival and Lizzo’s been making the headlining rounds for a while, there is a global twist that stands out this year. Halsey surprised the crowd at their Governors Ball set on Saturday night by covering “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” by Kate Bush. Watch a clip of the performance below. In fan-captured footage from the show, the pop singer is seen pacing the stage in a crop top and printed pants as she sings, “So if I only could/ I’d make a deal with God/ And get him to swap our places/ I’d be running up that road/ Be running up that hill/ With no problems.” At the end of the number she also tells the crowd, “I just had to do it! I’m sorry, guys, I just had to do it!” Halsey — who uses both she/her and they/them pronouns — then closed out their 16-song festival set with Manic-era No. 1 hit “Without Me” and “I Am Not a Woman, I’m a God” from 2021’s If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. Roddy Ricch missed his scheduled set at Governors Ball on Saturday after he was stopped trying to enter the festival’s grounds with a loaded weapon. TMZ reports that Ricch and two other individuals were arrested after police officers allegedly found a loaded firearm inside the vehicle that was transporting them to the festival. The rapper is facing four counts of criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a large capacity ammo feeding device, and unlawful possession of that device, and is expected to be arraigned on Monday. Ricch wasn’t the only Governor Ball performer who missed their scheduled set this weekend. Migos pulled out of the festival at the last-minute, and were replaced by Lil Wayne, who missed his set due to plane problems, and was replaced by A$AP Ferg. Advertisement Rel...

Billie Eilish Assumes Her Role as Pop Icon at Governors Ball 2021

Billie Eilish was only 16 years old the last time she played Governors Ball back in 2018, but she still felt like it was something different. “It was my favorite show I’d ever done,” she told the crowd on Friday night (September 24th) as she headlined Day 1 of Gov Ball, which has relocated to Citi Field from Randall’s Island, “And this might be that the second time.” A Billie Eilish show in 2021 is certainly a marquee event, and last night’s crowd knew that very well — thousands of fans showed up to cheer on one of the biggest stars in the world and experience live music again. Regardless of where you were situated in the crowd, you could physically hear the army of fans singing Eilish’s words back to her, almost louder than she even expected. Governors Ball 2021 Day 1: The 5 Best Things We Saw

It was just a few months ago that Foo Fighters welcomed back live music in New York City with their Madison Square Garden show, and that already feels like a lifetime ago. If that was the city healing, the return of Governors Ball is NYC thriving. The festival kicked off its 10th anniversary celebration on Friday night, beckoning the throngs of music-hungry youths to its new location at Citi Field. The parking lot setting is a far cry from the barely-accessible Randall’s Island of years’ past, and frankly that’s a good thing. There was already enough anxiety about being in such massive throngs once again (checked for vaccinations and negative tests though they were) without worrying about cramming onto a bus or missing the last ferry to get off the island. That relative ease compared to ye...

Governors Ball kicked off its 10th anniversary celebration on Friday, September 24th. After a year when all music festivals were furloughed due to the pandemic, it was glorious to see New York City’s premiere live music event return — even if it was in a new location at Citi Field. Headlined by Billie Eilish, Day 1 of Gov Ball 2021 saw electric sets from Bartees Strange, Orville Peck, Leon Bridges, Future Islands, Portugal. The Man, Freddie Gibbs, EARTHGANG, and many more. We may not have been able to catch all the incredible music that hit the stages throughout the day, but you can see what we saw by checking out this photo gallery from Consequence’s own Ben Kaye and Perry Froelich. Stay tuned for more daily galleries from the fest, plus catch our complete photo collection and portra...

“No One’s Ever Been Able to Do This”: An Oral History of the First Governors Ball Music Festival

One decade ago, a couple of untested twenty-something best friends set out to create a little music festival just off the island of Manhattan, putting on a one-day event on June 18th, 2011. In the 10 years and nine iterations since, Governors Ball has become an indelible part of the East Coast’s music landscape, morphing into New York’s answer to Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza; a place where the buzziest acts in music and its biggest fans converge into one memorable weekend. Here, founders, staff, and artists who played the very first Governors Ball reflect on how everything came together without nary a hiccup. This is the oral history of the first Governors Ball Music Festival. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: A BALL IS BORN It all begins with two best friends with a dream: Tom Russell and Jorda...

10 Best Governors Ball Performances of All Time: Watch

The Governors Ball Music Festival is set to return next month. Like most festivals, last year’s event, colloquially referred to as Gov Ball, was forced to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there has been some concern regarding the recent upsurge in cases in the wake of new COVID variants, the success and relative safety of last month’s Lollapalooza all but solidifies the New York City festival’s return. Adding to the hype is the fact that 2021 marks the festival’s 10th anniversary. Since debuting in 2011, Gov Ball has quickly become one of the nation’s most talked about festivals, known for drawing in a wide array of artists spanning multiple generations and genres. Over the years, the Gov Ball demographic has shifted to a primarily younger crowd, so it makes sense that this ye...
