Fans of Gorillaz Descend On NYC and London for Innovative Augmented Reality Performances: Watch

A virtual band put on a virtual show last weekend—and it was invisible to the naked eye. Using the power of augmented reality, Gorillaz recently premiered a new song for their fans in New York City and London. With help from Google’s ARCore Geospatial API, the iconic animated band harnessed the technology to host unique shows in Times Square and Piccadilly Circus, respectively. As part of the innovative concert experience, which combined real-world and computer-generated imagery, fans saw gigantic avatars of Gorillaz interacting with monuments while they performed the new track, “Skinny Ape.” Since the show had to be experienced with a mobile device via a bespoke app, fans were encouraged to move around different vantage points to get the most out of it. The AR-powered pe...

Listen: Gorillaz Recruit Dom Dolla for Massive Remix of “New Gold”

Back in August, Gorillaz released their single “New Gold” alongside Tame Impala and Bootie Brown. The second single off their forthcoming album, Cracker Island, the track offers a psychedelic twist on the iconic band’s classic indietronica sound. Now, house music superstar Dom Dolla has been selected for an official remix, which is out now. It’s rare for Gorillaz to recruit remixers—save for a 2020 remix by Robert Smith, the last time was over four years ago. The remix begins with atmospheric vocal chops, which layer over Parker’s hypnotic vocals for a blissful, floating effect. Brown’s unapologetic verses then enter the fray before a tense build, which culminates in an anthemic tech house drop. It’s a signature Dolla record and one that doubles as a car...

Gorillaz Bring Out All Their Famous Friends During Star-Studded L.A. Show

Gorillaz have always embraced the spirit of collaboration, and during their show in Los Angeles on Friday night (Sept. 23), Damon Albarn’s virtual band had a whole lot of special guests on hand. As Rolling Stone reports, Beck, Tame Impala, Schoolboy Q, Thundercat, Del the Funky Homosapien, De La Soul and Bootie Brown all joined Gorillaz at the KIA Forum in Los Angeles. Beck came out to perform “The Valley of the Pagans” from 2020’s Season One: Strange Timez and returned for the world premiere of “Possession Island,” from Gorillaz’ star-studded upcoming album Cracker Island. [embedded content][embedded content] Schoolboy Q guested on the first live performance of “Pac Man” from Song Machine and Thundercat assisted on “Cracker Island.” As he often does, The Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown helpe...

Gorillaz have rounded up an eye-popping roster of guests for their new album Cracker Island, which will arrive Feb. 24 from Parlophone. Stevie Nicks, Tame Impala, Bad Bunny, Beck and Adeleye Omotayo lend a hand on the project, with Thundercat having already appeared on the summer release of the title track. The album’s next single, “New Gold” featuring Tame Impala and The Pharcyde’s Bootie Brown, is out today (Aug. 31), following its live debut in tandem with those artists on Aug. 19 at London’s All Points East festival. “It’s kind of a mad song, to be honest with you,” Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn said from the stage. Gorillaz Set Sail for ‘Cracker Island’ With Help From Thundercat

Gorillaz have drafted Thundercat for their latest new song, “Cracker Island,” which was produced by the group in tandem with Greg Kurstin and Remi Kabaka Jr. The high-energy track has been a part of the Gorillaz live show since “the world’s biggest virtual band” returned to the road this spring and finds vocalist 2D (aka Damon Albarn) singing about what sounds like a cult “planting seeds at night to grow a made-up paradise.” Indeed, Gorillaz have apparently set up shop in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and launched a Web site inviting fans to join “The Last Cult,” led by group member Murdoc. “It’s nice to be back,” says 2D. “I’m well into our new tune. It brings back weird and scary memories of stuff that hasn’t happened yet.” It’s not clear whether “The Last Cult” might also ...

Flume Sets Stage for Massive Year With Psychedelic “2022” Teaser Featuring Damon Albarn of Gorillaz

January has only just begun and Flume has already made the shortlist of most hotly anticipated collabs for 2022. In a short clip simply titled “Flume – 2022,” the famed Australian electronic music producer showcases a dreamy ambient track featuring an unmistakable voice: Damon Albarn of Gorillaz. The visually pleasing graphic opens in a serene tropical landscape. As the camera zooms deeper, the rainforest seemingly sways aside to reveal a color-splashed cockatoo as lush synths and distorted hums resonate throughout. As the camera zooms into the lens of the bird, a psychedelic landscape of geometric shapes fills the scene to the sound of Albarn, who croons, “I thought beyond the exit, there would be palaces,” before the clip fades to darkness. Hear Gorillaz Tribute to West London on New Meanwhile EP

It’s been 20 years since the release of Gorillaz’ self-titled debut album. The virtual act is celebrating the milestone with an EP called Meanwhile. The three tracks are a tribute to where they first performed their hit “Clint Eastwood” at the 2000 Notting Hill Carnival in West London. The EP’s three songs are “Déjà Vu” (feat. Alicaì Harley), “Jimmy Jimmy” (feat. AJ Tracey), and “Meanwhile” (feat. Jelani Blackman and Barrington Levy). The title track is slightly mellow for a party EP and lyrics like, “I love carnival beers.” Poor Jimmy in “Jimmy Jimmy” seems to struggle with the pressure in his life but that makes for a really cool, reggae-inspired track. “Déjà Vu” is another reggae bump, with Harley killing the vocals on your new favorite sunny-beach-day song. Listen below: You Deserve to...

The 50 Best Songs of 2001

It was a banner year for producers. The Neptunes — a major commercial force since Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Got Your Money” — helmed more great songs than we could fit on this list. (Shout out to NSYNC’s “Girlfriend,” an all-time classic boy band single.) Timbaland, Kanye West and Dr. Dre were similarly on fire. It was also a crucial year for several elite artists: You’ll notice we couldn’t help but include multiple songs from Radiohead, Daft Punk, Destiny’s Child and The Strokes. But there’s something for everyone here — from Southern hip-hop (Mystikal) to indie-rock (Spoon) to prog-metal (Tool). So raise up, roll out and let us blow your mind. Here are the 50 Best Songs of 2001. 50. No Doubt – “Hella Good” [embedded content] Though “Hella Good” wasn’t the forever end of No Doubt (the band reu...
