9 best things to do in Kazbegi, Georgia

We share the best things to do in Kazbegi, Georgia’s spectacular northern frontier hiding in the clouds of the Caucasus After trekking the Highlander Svaneti, I headed for Kazbegi in northeastern Georgia. Surrounded on three sides by Russia and occupied South Ossetia, the nature-packed borderland is famed for its rich medley of deep green gorges, snow-capped summits and implausibly-placed medieval churches. The region’s main town is Stepantsminda (more commonly known as Kazbegi), huddled in the lee of the imposing Mt Kazbek which at 5,054m (16,581ft) is Georgia’s third-highest peak and the seventh-highest in the Caucasus Mountains. Unsurprisingly, hiking takes centre stage in this dramatic destination, with Stepantsminda the perfectly positioned gateway to the region’s mountains and valley...

Trekking the Highlander Svaneti in Georgia

Trekking the Highlander Svaneti offers an authentic taste of Georgia’s unspoilt northwest, a region as beautiful as it is remote Just 20 years ago, Svaneti was considered a danger zone. Today, with an embarrassment of snow-capped 4,000m peaks, enchanting villages dotted with tower houses and gleaming glaciers standing sentry over meadows of wildflowers, Svaneti is a paradise for hikers. Located in the remote northwest of Georgia, on the slopes of the mighty Caucasus Mountains near the border with Russia, wild and mysterious Svaneti has seen a tumultuous history including marauding Mongols and murderous blood feuds. Following independence in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union and the ensuing Georgian Civil War, the frontier region became a safe haven for criminals on the run. Atlas &a...

Herschel Walker Says Warnock Will ‘Embarrass Me’ At Debate

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Megan Varner / Getty Former gridiron star and Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker flatly admitted that Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock will “embarrass” him at their debate next month, surprising many. Walker startled reporters with his comments at a press conference held at the Port of Savannah last Friday (Sept. 16th) when asked about the debate against his Democratic opponent. “I am getting out talking to people and talking to you,” he said. “I’m a country boy. I’m not that smart. He’s a preacher. (Warnock) is smart and wears these nice suits. So, he is going to show up and embarrass me at the debate on Oct. 14th, and I’m just waiting to show up and I will do my best.” Related Stories When pressed on his initial refusal to debate Warnock, the...

White Georgia Principal Caught On Camera Using N-Word While Lecturing White Student About C-Word

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Google Maps / Google A white Georgia high school principal is under fire after being caught on camera using the n-word while trying to explain the harm of racial slurs to a white student. He apparently didn’t realize the student was recording him, but that’s only a legitimate excuse if you’re of the opinion that racial slurs are OK  so long as they aren’t documented. (If a racist drops the n-word in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a bigoted sound? HELL YES, IT DOES! TF?) According to NBC News, Jeff Cheney, the principal of East Forsyth High School in Gainesville, was reprimanding the white student in front of two other staff members, according to a statement by Forsyth County Schools. Apparently, the white student had called him a “crack...

Georgia aims to adopt European crypto standards for Anti-Money Laundering

Georgia, one of the world’s most cryptocurrency-friendly countries, is moving to introduce new crypto regulations to pursue its ambitions to become a global crypto hub. Georgian lawmakers have prepared a new regulatory framework targeting digital business and cryptocurrency trading in the country, Georgian Minister of Economy and Vice Prime Minister Levan Davitashvili announced. Davitashvili said that a draft bill has been sent to the parliament and the amendments are expected to be passed in the autumn session, local news agency Business Media Georgia reported on Monday. According to the minister, the draft bill aims to coordinate local cryptocurrency laws with three major European Union directives, including the Payment Services Directive (PSD2), the Capital Requirements Directive (CRD) ...

Atlanta’s Music Midtown Festival Canceled After Court Ruling Made It Illegal to Keep Guns Out of Event

The long-running Music Midtown festival at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, scheduled for Sept. 17-18 with headliners My Chemical Romance, Future, Jack White and Fallout Boy, has been called off, according to a statement issued by festival organizers. The likely cause, industry sources tell Billboard, are recent changes to Georgia gun laws that prevent the festival from banning guns on to the publicly owned festival grounds. “Hey Midtown fans — due to circumstances beyond our control, Music Midtown will no longer be taking place this year,” a statement posted on Music Midtown’s website reads. “We were looking forward to reuniting in September and hope we can all get back to enjoying the festival together again soon.” While owner Live Nation didn’t provide any additional details for the ...

HipHopWired Featured Video CLOSE Source: Daniel Zuchnik / Getty Trevian Kutti, a former publicist for Kanye West and R. Kelly, now finds herself in the middle of an explosive matter unfolding in Georgia. Kutti has been called to testify in an election meddling probe in the state after the publicist threatened a worker to admit falsely that voting results were tampered with in support of Donald Trump. CNN reported on Georgia investigators calling on Kutti to testify in the probe on June 14, but the matter resurfaced on Twitter after Joy Reid mentioned the matter on The Reid Out show. Ruby Freeman was cornered by Kutti, who referred to the election worker as a “loose end for a party that needs to tidy up” and that she would face legal ramifications if she didn’t say that the voting process i...

Law Decoded: Bitcoin’s censorship resistance capacity enters the spotlight, Feb. 14–21

Amid the barrage of last week’s regulatory news, from rumors of Joe Biden’s upcoming executive order on digital assets to another round of the Russian government’s crypto tug of war, the storyline that was arguably the most consequential for the mainstream narrative on the social effects of crypto has been the one around the Canadian government’s standoff with the Freedom Convoy. The government’s invocation of emergency powers to put down a protest movement — combined with the movement’s financial infrastructure being one of the main attack vectors — has led many observers to appreciate with renewed vigor Bitcoin’s capacity to resist state financial censorship. If a government as “civilized” as Canada’s can arbitrarily cut off a group it doesn’t like from the financial system, then any sta...

Georgia lawmakers consider giving crypto miners tax exemptions in new bill

Five members of the Georgia House of Representatives have introduced a bill that would exempt local crypto miners from paying sales and use tax. On Monday, Georgia Representatives Don Parsons, Todd Jones, Katie Dempsey, Heath Clark, and Kasey Carpenter introduced HB 1342, a bill which has yet to be titled. The legislation proposes to amend the state tax code “to exempt the sale or use of electricity used in the commercial mining of digital assets” and would likely only apply to commercial miners operating in a facility of at least 75,000 square feet — roughly 6,968 square meters. The proposed bill is the latest in the series of state-level measures aiming to encourage crypto miners to set up shop. In January, Illinois lawmakers introduced a bill which would extend tax incentives for data c...
