Out with the old and in with the new—French electronic music tandem Polo & Pan are cleaning house, making space in their studio for fresh gear and audio equipment. Now, fans can head to the official Polo & Pan Reverb shop to purchase instruments from the duo’s treasure trove of vintage audio equipment. The instruments for sale were “pivotal” to the production of many of their hit songs, including “Tunnel” and “Ani Kuni,” a member of Reverb’s team tells EDM.com. Perhaps most notably, a pair of Universal Audio Urei 1176 compressors is available. They have been used to create almost all of the Polo & Pan tracks. Concrete is apparently a more robust material than we thought. Vietnamese designer Duc Vu Anh has devised a concept for a nimble portable speaker made entirely out of concrete. It’s just a concept at this juncture, but if the unit is ever manufactured for sale, it could provide users with high-quality audio. To operate the innovative speaker, the user would simply tap the top of it to turn it on and do the same to turn it off. There are four physical buttons, which allow it to be turned up and down, play and pause music, and connect to Bluetooth. The device would also have a USB port on the left side to recharge the battery. According to Anh’s technical sketches of the speaker, it will use high gloss paint, concrete, ABS plastic and translucent plastic. And there...
Speakers for any modern devices are typically built right in to the device, but Roland is thinking outside the box—or piano—for their 50th anniversary. The fabled electronic musical instrument company debuted its ambitious digital piano concept piano at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The piano features a sleek body made of Japanese oak with a touch panel in the lid, and it hides a 14-speaker, 360° system, per Engadget. But the unit’s standout feature is its innovative flying drone speakers, which “hover over the piano” and “bathe the player in a sound shower.” The speakers are said to float around and change positions, communicating with the piano on a low-latency channel developed in-house by Roland. After over $15,000 worth of music production equipment was stolen from his studio, Argentinian-born techno producer Pfirter has launched a campaign to replace the gear. The DJ, whose real name is Juan Pablo Pfirter, took to social media to announce the “particularly devastating” theft. He says he returned from a weekend on tour to find out his home and studio had been robbed. “I can’t explain how it feels to come back to your place and see that all the essential material things are gone,” said Pfirter, who also runs his own record label, MindTrip. “This is particularly devastating for me as I’m still recovering from the difficulties of being a DJ/producer during the 2 years of the pandemic, which also led to not having my studio or home insured....

Teenage Engineering is bringing the vocal range of a full choir to your home studio. The Swedish hardware company has always been forward-thinking when it comes to production functionality and design, like their portable pocket synth series and Record Factory, the company’s at-home solution for allowing musicians to print their own 5″ vinyl records. Now, the developer has returned with a new studio weapon, the Teenage Engineering Choir. The choir consists of an eight-piece set of crafted wooden “dolls,” each equipped to “sing” with its own unique vocal pattern. Each doll was created with the influence of a specific musical culture in mind and when placed together, they are capable of recognizing each other in the space. They can then deliver harmonized performances. Scroll to Continue Reco...
South Africa’s ex-president Jacob Zuma on Friday mounted a last-ditch legal bid to avoid prison after the country’s top court ordered him jailed for failing to appear before graft investigators. In a landmark ruling, the Constitutional Court on Tuesday handed Zuma a 15-month term for contempt after he snubbed a probe into the theft of state assets under his tenure. If the 79-year-old fails to turn himself in by Sunday, police will be given a further three days to arrest him and take him to jail to start the sentence. As the deadline loomed, Zuma pleaded on Friday that the order be “reconsidered and rescinded.” “It will not be futile,” Zuma said in papers filed to the court, “to make one last attempt to invite the Constitutional Court to relook its decision and to merely reassess whether it...
Tanzania will spend $470 million buying vaccines and supporting economic sectors hit hard by the coronavirus, President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Monday. Since Hassan took office after the death of then-president John Magufuli in March, the government has changed tack from playing down the pandemic to calling for social distancing and emphasising mask wearing in public. Issuing the first data on infections since May 2020, Hassan said there were more than 100 Covid-19 patients in Tanzania as of last Saturday, with 70 of them being provided oxygen. Half of the cash will be spent on vaccines, protective gear and other medical equipment, Hassan said, with the rest going to stimulate sectors that are reeling from the crisis. She did not give details about the sectors but tourism, one of the t...
