Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring will make his acting debut in Apple TV+’s upcoming drama The Changeling, SPIN has confirmed. Herring will star alongside LaKeith Stanfield, Adina Porter and Clark Backo in the adaptation of Victor LaValle’s best-selling book of the same name. The show is described as “a fairytale for grown-ups. A horror story, a parenthood fable and a perilous odyssey through a New York City you didn’t know existed.” Herring will portray William Wheeler, a man driven to win back his wife and children who befriends Stanfield’s Apollo, a rare book dealer. The Changeling will be produced by Apple Studios and Annapurna. No release date has been announced for the project, which was originally in production at FX in 2018. Modest Mouse Share New Single ‘The Sun Hasn’t Left’

Modest Mouse’s new album is out next week. So far we’ve heard  “We Are Between” and “Leave a Light On” from The Golden Casket and today, they unveiled what should be the last song before the album’s released with “The Sun Hasn’t Left.” “The Sun Hasn’t Left” makes creative use of new wave beats, similarly to the other two singles. It sounds as if this tune even utilizes a xylophone. The bouncy instrument is fitting to the hopeful message this single offers with lyrics like: “You’re not wrong, things are a mess but there’s still something left.” Listen to “The Sun Hasn’t Left” below. Modest Mouse Share ‘Leave A Light On’ off Upcoming The Golden Casket LP

“Leave A Light On,” from Modest Mouse’s upcoming album, The Golden Casket, has landed. It is the second single from Modest Mouse’s anticipated seventh studio album. It follows a new wave tune “We Are Between,” which came out earlier this month. “The song finds [singer Issac] Brock navigating the existential threat of losing our humanity — and the interconnectedness that come with it – amidst a constant societal barrage of physical and digital materialism.” Additionally, you can see the song live, as the band has plotted an extensive 2021 U.S. summer tour, joined by special guests Future Islands for a handful of dates. Using similar synth sounds and psychedelic beats as “We Are Between” paired with an earworm of a hook, “Leave A Light On” sets high expectations for the rest o...

The 50 Best Alt-Rock Love Songs

Not all love songs are romantic. Not all love songs are even happy. It all depends on your definition of the term. For every “My Girl” or “Your Song,” there’s at least one track with a nuanced take on the darker, more complicated sides of love — the drama of a long-term relationship, the fear of losing a partner, the void left in love’s wake. Many of those songs fall under the admittedly broad umbrella of “alt-rock.” So to mark Valentine’s Day, we decided to gather 50 of our favorite “love songs” in the genre — both conventional and otherwise. Throughout this list, you’ll find lines about blooming romance and marital bliss. You’ll also find nods to drug addiction and car crashes. There’s something for everyone. – Ryan Reed 50. that dog. – “I’m Gonna See You” You take the good, you tak...

The 30 Best Albums of 2020

After a deluge of canceled or delayed tours, drive-in experiments, Bandcamp Fridays and bedroom livestreams, we’re finally here. Yay? It’s hard to celebrate much of anything in 2020. But one encouraging sign from the music industry has been the number of artists innovating on the fly — figuring out ways to sustain their careers through the madness. And as fans, at least we’ve had new albums to help us process our continuing semi-apocalypse. Having (mercifully) reached the end of this awful year, we have even more perspective on the functionality of a great record. The 30 we’ve assembled here have prompted us to dance, helped us grieve, made us laugh, or even just allowed us to escape into a transportive riff or soundscape. We assume they did the same for the artists themselves. Let us reme...

Future Islands Take to the Battlefield in ‘Born in a War’ Video

As they prepare to drop their latest album, As Long As You Are on Friday (Oct. 9), Future Islands has released a new video for “Born in a War.” Created by award-winning American artist Wayne White and his son, Woodrow, the visual — a collaboration that was six years in the making — takes a hard look at the U.S., consumption and capitalism. “We first met with Wayne White back in 2014 to discuss collaborating on a music video,” the band said in a statement. “We’ve been wanting to work with him since then. We’re stoked that we were finally able to work together on the video for Born in a War. We love the puppets he created and his unique interpretation of the song.” [embedded content] Future Islands previously released “Thrill” and “For Sure.” To commemorate their new record, the band wi...
