Wyclef Jean Claims It’s Too Soon For A Fugees Biopic

The Fugees have enjoyed critical success, but their story has yet to be formally told. Wyclef Jean says it's too soon to do their biopic.

Pras Of The Fugees Sued For Allegedly Finessing Company Over Music Catalog Sale

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty Pras has some more explaining to do. A company is alleging he finessed them after they gave him a loan for his music. As spotted on Digital Music News The Fugees‘ member will have to answer for himself in a court of law. Back in January, a firm called Open On Sunday struck a deal with the “How Many Mics” performer. Both parties agreed the OOS would secure a loan based on his Sony Music royalties stemming from his work on Blunted On Reality, The Score, and his debut solo album Ghetto Supastar. Things seemed to get a bit messy immediately after the contract was finalized. In February, Pras allegedly asked for an amendment to the contract requesting for the loan to be based on a book deal versus his catalog which was denie...

Fugees Reunion Tour Halted Due To Pras Michel’s Connection To Jho Low?

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Slaven Vlasic / Getty For fans around the world waiting to learn when the Fugees reunion world tour will make a stop in their part of the world, it appears those plans are largely put on hold. According to a new report, group member Pras Michel and his ongoing federal money laundering case will prevent him from leaving the country thus ending the tour. Puck News published a report pointing to the legal ordeal of Pras Michel, who is connected to Malaysian businessman and socialite Jho Low. Low was cozy with many of Hollywood and entertainment elites but became the target of a money laundering scheme that allegedly stole billions from Malaysia’s 1MDB fund. According to charges levied by the federal prosecutors in the United States, Michel worked in Low’s st...

Ms. Lauryn Hill Joined Wyclef Jean to Perform Fugees Songs at Essence Fest

Last September, everything seemed to be going somewhat well (at least compared to now). One of the best things to happen was that after years of squabbling, The Fugees were finally putting their differences aside not just for a one-off, but for an entire tour commemorating the 25th anniversary of The Score. The trio even played a show in New York (where they showed up three hours late, but hey, who is counting?)! We had our doubts that the good times were gonna keep going, but the Fugees’ first show since 2005 was great and made our list of the best shows of 2021. However, since we can’t have good things, the Fugees reunion tour disintegrated in January with a ho-hum announcement blaming it on COVID cases spiking (though it’s been reported that ticket sales weren’t so hot). So, they went b...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Our 21 Favorite Concerts of 2021

Ah, 2021 — the year live music (mostly) roared back. After 18 months of livestream drudgery, it felt like unicorns dancing on a rainbow every time someone so much as plugged in a guitar. It was a year of “post-vax concert stories,” where every show was a hard-won reunion, a triumphant homecoming, and a victory all at once. Strangest of all, it was the year when we found ourselves getting misty just being able to look out at a crowd, marveling at the gift of singing shoulder-to-shoulder with someone other than our cats. Okay, so we’re still a little sentimental. The point is, in a year when every show was a grand slam of catharsis and joy, it was slightly painful to narrow this list down. But after not getting to do one at all in 2020, we are ecstatic and proud to give you some of the highe...

Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Praz Michel were all in tow to perform select songs from their classic second album, The Score, as the album is celebrating its 25th anniversary as of this past February. The Fugees Return to the Stage in Epic Fashion

On a windy rooftop above Pier 17 of New York’s South Street Seaport—and approximately three and a half hours after the show’s advertised start time—the Fugees performed together for the first time in 15 years, presenting a colossal show taped to be aired as part of this weekend’s Global Citizen Festival. Billed as a pop-up show, it was far from that. With a pageantry rarely seen at a rap show, the set opened with the one-by-one emergence of a 20-piece mixed-style orchestra (14 horn players in formal attire, multiple guitarists, keyboardists, and bass players, backup singers, and a DJ), followed by Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and finally, Ms. Lauryn Hill, wearing a red-ruffled couture gown (which word is she designed). As an instrumental horn and key version of “The Score” led into “How Many ...
