Social media blamed for $1B in crypto scam losses in 2021

DOJ indicts BitConnect’s Indian founder for $2.4B crypto Ponzi scheme

The founder of the infamous crypto exchange BitConnect, Satish Kumbhani, has been charged for allegedly misleading investors globally and defrauding them of $2.4 billion in the process. Singaporean megabank DBS works on expanding Bitcoin trading to retail

DBS Bank, Singapore’s largest bank, is working on expanding its cryptocurrency exchange beyond its current investor base of institutional clients, according to the CEO. DBS Bank CEO Piyush Gupta spoke of the bank’s cryptocurrency business during the Q4 2021 earnings call on Monday, stating that the company will focus on measures to further scale its crypto exchange operations in 2022. Chainalysis report finds most NFT wash traders unprofitable

Nonfungible tokens (NFT) have taken the world by storm, resulting in mainstream interest and greater adoption of cryptocurrency. According to blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis, NFT popularity skyrocketed in 2021. Chainalysis’ “NFT Market Report” shows a minimum of $44.2 billion worth of cryptocurrency sent to Ethereum smart contracts associated with NFT marketplaces and collections last year. Indian taxman recovers $6.62M from WazirX for evading tax on commission

Indian crypto exchange WazirX has reportedly paid over $6.6 million (49.2 crore rupees) following non-payment of Goods and Services Tax (GST) on trade commissions. The total recovery includes the pending tax of $5.43 million (40.5 crore rupees), the interest and a penalty for non-payment. Government officials from the Central GST and Central Excise committee (CGST Mumbai Zone) recovered the funds from the crypto exchange after detecting a GST evasion of $5.43 million on the commissions. Crypto fraudster arrested in Thailand for duping and stealing $15M from victims

The suspect is said to have collaborated with others to steal from unsuspecting victims through a bogus cryptocurrency scheme This weekend, Thailand’s Crime Suppression Division apprehended Mana Jumuang for running a cryptocurrency scheme that saw victims lose their funds between 2018 and 2019. The 50-year old is said to have been the mastermind behind the scam operation. He illegally obtained more than 500 million Baht (the equivalent of almost $15 million) before deserting investors. The Additional Commissioner of Police Shikha Goel warned Indian citizens about the rise in cybercrime in an event hosted by the city police of Hyderabad, India, suggesting not to transfer cryptocurrencies to unauthorized private wallets. Goel highlighted the various methods that are actively being used by fraudsters to dupe investors such as lucrative investment opportunities, illegitimate bank transfers and cryptocurrencies.
