Flea Joins Nick Cave and Warren for Performance of ‘We No Who U R’

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea joined Nick Cave and Warren Ellis on stage at their show at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. During the duo’s second encore, the bassist joined the group for a performance of “We No Who U R.” This is the first time Cave had played the song since 2015. It was originally on Cave and the Bad Seeds’ 2012 album Push the Sky Away. [embedded content][embedded content] Despite the happy reunion, Cave and Red Hot Chili Peppers have not always gotten along. According to NME, Cave in 2004 reportedly said in response to a review of the band’s Stadium Arcadium, “I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.” Also according to NME, Flea responded to Cave’s comment stating: “For a second that hu...

To Live and Die in L.A.: Our 1996 Red Hot Chili Peppers Cover Story

This article originally appeared in the April 1996 issue of SPIN. “Los Angeles is my favorite city in the world!” declares super foxy Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro, offering as proof of his conviction the city’s name tattooed on the back of his neck. “I would never live anywhere else.” Navarro, drummer Chad Smith, and I are wedged into Newsroom, a trendy Beverly Hills restaurant/coffee house/media mill where omnipresent TV monitors serve up the latest from the E! network with your rice-milk cappuccinos. “But I feel like the bad is taking over,” says Smith, an unadulterated rock dude and Detroit native who, Navarro says, wrote the book on that city’s infamous evening of arson known as Devil’s Night. “I wouldn’t want my kids growing up here,” admits Smith, who at age 33 s...

Nandi Bushell Gets Flea’s Approval With ‘Under the Bridge’ Cover

The 10-year-old rock phenom Nandi Bushell dropped her latest cover on Sunday — an enthusiastic rendition of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” — and she got the stamp of approval on it from none other than Flea himself. The legendary RHCP bassist tweeted “always love to Nandi!” after the young prodigy tagged him and his bandmates in her tweet announcing the cover. always love to Nandi! https://t.co/hT3ZuyCBd5 — Flea (@flea333) February 21, 2021 Of course, supporting Bushell has proven to be a valuable decision for artists in recent months, because otherwise, she may very well challenge them to a musical battle and then outplay them on social media for all to see. Just ask Dave Grohl how that feels. The unique take on the RHCP track comes hot on the heels of Bushell’s lates...

Flea and John Frusciante Are Spinning Records That ‘Impacted’ Them on DubLab Radio

Flea and John Frusciante are pretty damn good at what they do, and today they’re “gonna spin some jams that got us going and impacted how we play our instruments” on DubLab Radio. The two-hour session begins at 5:00 p.m. EST on dublab.com. The Red Hot Chili Peppers were supposed to be headlining Boston Calling this weekend; however, the COVID-19 pandemic squashed those plans. Though Frusciante played with RHCP during a special event earlier this year, the festival was supposed to mark the guitarist’s first performance since reuniting with the band in December after a 13 year hiatus. Earlier this week, Lollapalooza shared RHCP’s set from 2006 — a gig that would be one of Frusciante’s last before he quit the band a second time. Josh Klinghoffer took over on guitar before being...
