The holidays are over, but the Neil Young Archives is the gift that keeps on giving. Young has announced a pair of projects centered around his 1982 album Trans. The first is the unreleased LP Johnny’s Island, recorded with the Trans band in 1982, and the second is a new film entitled Trans: The Animated Story. Trans was a significant departure from Young’s folk-inflected rock, and its release became one of the more controversial moments in his career. With synthesizers and heavy doses of vocoder, it was inspired by the robopop of Kraftwerk as well as his own attempts to communicate with his nonverbal son, Ben. Pixar Announces New Film Luca
Pixar has announced its next film: Luca, set to hit theaters on June 18th, 2021. While plot details are being kept vague for now, Pixar describes the film as “a coming-of-age story about a young boy in Italy, who shares in adventures on the Italian Riviera with his newfound best friend. Jordan Peele and Issa Rae Team Up for Universal’s Sinkhole
Jordan Peele is keeping things spooky. As Deadline reports, the Oscar-winning mastermind behind Get Out and Us is teaming up with Insecure star Issa Rae on a curious new genre film for Universal called Sinkhole. Based on Leyna Krow’s short story, the film surrounds a young family that moves into a dream home, only one of the amenities is a gaping sinkhole in the backyard. And said sinkhole tends to fix broken things — possibly people even. As with anything Peele touches, there’s an inherent social commentary within the story. As Deadline notes, the subplot of Sinkhole carries a “commentary on the human condition through the lens of female identity.” Universal nabbed the rights to the story for a seven figure deal, beating out more than 10 studio bidders, which makes this something a coup. ...
Edgar Wright to Direct Hollywood Ghost Story Stage 13
Edgar Wright is staying spooky. As Deadline reports, the Baby Driver filmmaker has added another project to his plate. It’s called Stage 13, a ghost story from Amblin Partners that reads like a ghoulish comedy in the vein of, say, Warm Bodies. Written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, who based the screenplay on his own short story-of-the-same-name, Stage 13 follows a silent film-era actress who has haunted the titular soundstage for decades. Her afterlife changes when she meets a struggling director, and the two find a way to work together. It’s easy to see why this project would tickle Wright’s funny bone. George Miller Announces Mad Max: Fury Road Prequel with Young Furiosa
In a recent interview with the New York Times, apocalypse auteur George Miller officially announced his next Mad Max movie. But while it will tell the story of Furiosa from 2015’s Fury Road, it will not star Charlize Theron. That’s in part because, as Theron herself hinted at way back in 2017, the expected sequel is actually a prequel. Miller and his co-writer Nick Lathouris wrote a draft of the prequel even before Fury Road had started filming, along with extensive backstories for every character from the villainous Immortan Joe to Doof Warrior with his flamethrower guitar.
