Father John Misty is the latest artist to release a Live at Electric Lady EP in tandem with Spotify, and his edition sports five of his own songs plus a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever).” Misty joins Japanese Breakfast, Patti Smith, Bleachers and Remi Wolf as a participant in the EP series, recorded at the legendary New York studio where Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Clash and many other A-list names put their work to tape. Aside from the Wonder cover, Misty’s EP includes five tracks from his latest Sub Pop album, Chloe and the Next 20th Century. His fall tour in support of the project hits Louisville’s Bourbon and Beyond festival tonight (Sept. 15) and includes upcoming shows at New York’s Radio City Music Hall (Sept. 22, with the New York Pops...

The Best Rock Albums of 2022 (So Far)

Compared to the last couple of years, 2022 has been a bonanza of incredible rock record releases. It seems like every week there are two or three projects just begging for proper time and attention. Many artists who were kept off the road due to the pandemic and were inspired to write during their forced, sabbatical and have returned with fresh perspectives and new sounds. Then there were those who held back some of their best material to wait and see how the state of the world shook out. However they got to 2022, and it’s a joy to finally begin to hear these legitimately righteous records. It’s probably a little too soon for me to declare an absolute favorite album out of the bunch we’ve gotten so far. It’s been such an eclectic year for rock albums, with artists of every stripe truly del...

Father John Misty’s ‘Buddy’s Rendezvous’ Video Might Make You Cry

Father John Misty tugs on the heartstrings as only he can in the video for his song “Buddy’s Rendezvous,” which was directed by his wife and frequent collaborator, Emma Elizabeth Tillman. In the clip, a man who has been newly released from jail attempts to reconnect with his adult daughter as he traverses the less glamorous side of Los Angeles, all while flashing back to memories of a simpler time. [embedded content][embedded content] “Although the video and the song can be considered love letters to Los Angeles, the themes are universal: disappointments, regrets, forgiveness, tenderness, perseverance and love,” Tillman says of the song, which is drawn from Father John Misty’s new Sub Pop album, Chloë and The Next 20th Century. Complementing the video is Lana Del Rey’s cover of “Buddy’s Re...

Father John Misty’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century Shines With Its Old Hollywood Palette

Father John Misty is something of an online discourse generator. You never quite know what to expect from him. He used to have a tremendous presence on the internet and social media at large, but he has receded a bit in recent years. Around the album cycle for 2017’s epic Pure Comedy, it seemed like Josh Tillman, who has been performing under the Father John Misty moniker for a decade now, couldn’t stop over-explaining his music. The following year, however, he became notably less loquacious on the understated, masterful, and personal God’s Favorite Customer. He’s keeping that up for his fifth record as Father John Misty, Chloë and the Next 20th Century. Although Tillman’s music is fun to talk about online because of its excess and decadence, his delightfully outsized personality has taken...

On April 14, he is scheduled for two back-to-back gigs at The Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center in New York. Yesterday, Misty shared the sprawling, seven-minute “The Next 20th Century.” Chloë and The Next 20th Century is out April 8 via Sub Pop and Be...

Hear Father John Misty’s Sprawling Seven-Minute New Song

Father John Misty unveiled a surreal, seven-minute single, “The Next 20th Century.” The title track is one of two off his upcoming Chloë And The Next 20th Century. [embedded content][embedded content] “The Next 20th Century” initially brings a spacey, sprawling aura. Its light, searing strings invite in Tillman’s soft plea, but just a little before the halfway mark, an electric guitar invades the track. Its brief fury contrasts the track’s overall ominous, lingering creep, and only gets us excited for the new sounds of Chloë And The Next 20th Century. Chloë And The Next 20th Century is slated for release on April 8. Tillman previously released a few of its tracks including “Funny Girl,” “Q4,” and “Goodbye Mr. Blue.” The record marks his fifth studio record, an...

Father John Misty Unveils ‘Goodbye Mr. Blue’ Music Video

Father John Misty recently released his newest single “Goodbye Mr. Blue” from his new album Chloë and the Next 20th Century. The single reveals Josh Tillman in a state of intimacy: a stripped-down, country-folk tune exuding warmth from fingerpicked guitar riffs and Harry Nilsson-inspired lyrics. Tillman was also inspired by hearty singer-songwriters such as Jim Croce and John Denver. The accompanying video paints, according to a release, “an elliptical portrait of a family reunion filmed on location in Sofia, Bulgaria.” Directed by Noel Paul, the bittersweet pastel images of family and returning home offer a comforting backdrop for Tillman’s recent single. The story follows a young woman’s journey to her family home as she travels to Sofia. [embedded content][embedded content] Father John ...

Now, there’s more. “Q4” is the latest song to be revealed and its vibe is markedly different from “Funny Girl.” There is also video to go along with the song, which was directed by Grant James. [embedded content][embedded content] So far, Father John Misty has a pair of symphonic shows planned, one in Los Angeles on February 25 and another in London at the Barbican. Father John Misty Reinterprets T. Rex’s ‘Main Man’

AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T. Rex is out today. And Father John Misty’s reinterpretation of T. Rex’s “Main Man” was released to mark the occasion. Misty’s version stays true to the original but has a bit more of a softer pop-rock tone that’s part of the singer-songwriter’s signature style. The compilation was one of the last projects famed SNL music producer Hal Willner worked on before passing from COVID-19 earlier this year. “Hal had a unique vision of Marc Bolan’s music, and working on AngelHeaded Hipster brought him great joy. Speaking for those closest to him, we will forever be heartbroken at the untimely loss of our beloved friend and irreplaceable creative engine,” Rachel Fox, supervising producer of AngelHeaded Hipster and longtime Willner collaborator, said ...

Elton John on Today’s Hits: ‘They’re Not Real Songs’

Elton John has spoken out on the current state of modern pop music, and it’s not pretty. “Everybody else there’s four or five writers on (a track),” John told BBC Radio 6 Music. “You look at most of the records in the charts – they’re not real songs. They’re bits and pieces and it’s nice to hear someone write a proper song.” He continued, “I like people who write songs. And there’s plenty of people that do but a lot of them don’t get played on the radio because they’re too sophisticated and we get songs made by a computer all the time and I’m not interested in that.” John admitted that he’s a fan of both Father John Misty and Conan Gray. SPIN profiled Gray in April, which you can read here. “(Misty) reminds me a little bit of me the way he writes songs,” he said. “Conan’s from America and ...
