Fatboy Slim and Eats Everything Are Fans of This 9-Year-Old DJ

Most DJs get their start on the graveyard shift. Others find their groove in the basement of a club or fraternity house. But for nine-year-old Betty Hales, also known as DJ Sunshine, a renegade set beneath an underpass proved to be her unbelievable big break. Now, Hales counts Fatboy Slim and Eats Everything as two of her top fans. The performance took place earlier this fall in Bristol at a location where Fatboy Slim and Eats Everything had planned to host a free party. But when police shut down the event before it even started, Hales and her parents saw an opportunity. They quickly set up a table and DJ decks, handed Hales her headphones and hit “record.” The video her dad posted of Hales playing “Bristol to Brighton,” by the two artists she so fabulously upstaged...

Watch Nandi Bushell Improv Over Fatboy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’

Before 2021 came to an end, Nandi Bushell gifted us with one last video. This time, instead of covering a song she tried her hand at improvising, and unsurprisingly totally killed it. In an Instagram post, the 11-year-old explained how watching Fatboy Slim’s daughter Nelly Cook DJ on YouTube inspired her to improvise a drum part over her dad’s 1999 hit “Right Here, Right Now,” marking the first time she played along with a dance song. “It was a lot of fun and nice to try something different on my musical quest,” the prodigy wrote. Watch Nandi Bushell drum along to Fatboy Slim’s “Right Here, Right Now” below. Though 2021 was a rough year for many people, Nandi seemed to thrive. The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

According to the Darlington & Stockton Times, Slim, who spoke at a recent event for the Fire Fighters Charity, said he kicked the tires on a career pivot during times of financial strife. “I have been in the music business pretty much all my life but there have been ups and downs and there was one particular down where everyone around was like, ‘You are going to have to actually get a proper job now because you are skint.'” “I thought about what j...

Fatboy Slim and Bootsy Collins Release 4K Remaster of Christopher Walken-Led Video for “Weapon of Choice”

Twenty years ago, when most of the people reading this article were in grade school or still in the womb, Fatboy Slim and the funk legend Bootsy Collins released the Grammy Award-winning single “Weapon of Choice.” While the song itself is iconic enough, many people have distinct memories of its unforgettable music video. Now, in honor of the track’s 20th anniversary, they’ve released a 4K remastered version of the video. The video was directed by the highly-acclaimed filmmaker, Spike Jonze, known for his work on Being John Malkovich, Her, and the Jackass series. For the musical accompaniment, Christopher Walken was recruited to star in the video. Delightfully bizarre like much of Jonze’s work, the video simply features Walken extravagantly dancing through...

Jasmine Harrison, Youngest Woman to Row Solo Across Any Ocean, on How Music Powered Her Boat

Jasmine Harrison is not a musician. She has never picked up a microphone or downloaded music production software. She’s only danced to one song in her entire life, albeit an embarrassing one. But after making history as the youngest woman to row solo across any ocean, she is living proof that music can propel anyone to do extraordinary things. Accompanied by nothing but a playlist and the mesmeric, repetitive splosh of her oar slicing the ocean’s surface, Harrison, 21, traversed the Atlantic Ocean in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes. However, with a bubbly naiveté rarely found in a barnstorming, record-breaking heroine, you wouldn’t know it when speaking to her. And after the enormity of her accomplishment finally sunk in, even she can’t believe it was her....
