Twenty years ago today (December 22nd), the music world lost one of its greatest artists, legendary Clash singer-guitarist Joe Strummer. The punk icon’s passing in 2002 at the age of 50 was unexpected, as he suffered a heart attack caused by an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Several weeks prior to his death, it was announced that The Clash would be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2003. And just a week after the Rock Hall announcement, fans at a London benefit for firefighters were pleasantly surprised when Clash bandmate Mick Jones jumped onstage to join Strummer for three songs to end the show — “Bankrobber,” “White Riot” and “London’s Burning.” It marked the first time the two performed together since Jones’ last Clash show in 1983. It may be the final day of International Women’s Month, but Mariana BO‘s exclusive mix for EDM.com will be sure to keep its spirit alive for weeks to come. The nearly hourlong mix is a relentless arrangement of electro and deep house, paired with high-energy big room and classic EDM sonics. With every track either created or remixed by BO herself, it’s a special showcase of her talents for festival-ready production combined with her signature violin instrumentation. Selections like “Drop It” (with Dubdogz, Flakkë and LUISAH) and “Vivaldi” (with Timmy Trumpet) are strong displays of the latter. Meanwhile, songs like “Gypsy” (with Mr. Black and Futuristic Polar Bears) pay homage to BO’s Latin roots with Spanish-language l...
With official remixes out this year for the likes of Gorgon City (“Oxygen”) and Shouse (“Love Tonight”), along with high-profile projects with Carl Cox, Lee Foss, Pete Tong and LOWES, it’s clear that British beatsmith Franky Wah is having a major moment. Only emphasizing the now-global success of the Anjunadeep-backed artist was his debut headlining tour in North America. It saw the genre-shapeshifter, whose latest EP pulled together progressive trance, garage and melodic house, touch down in seven cities across the U.S. and Mexico. This career-affirming move for Wah included performances at keystone venues like Sound Nightclub in Los Angeles, Elsewhere in Brooklyn, and Bar Standard in Denver, as well as an appearance at We Are FSTVL in Cancún....
It’s no secret that the current generation of young music producers is about as creative as they come. From the endless libraries of music available online to the fast-paced evolution of music-making technology, their artistries have been catalyzed by unprecedented access to education and inspiration. The result? Experimental aesthetics, enticingly textured soundscapes and respect for— yet rampant disregard of—genre. The debut album from rising Namibian producer Gina Jeanz proves no different. Released independently on December 3rd, Lucid Theory is equal parts old and new, reigniting well-known sonics and drum machines with multidimensional arrangements and whimsical genre blends. Jeanz also plays with euphonious vocalists and live instrumentation, channeling the comp...
