Trending Up: Demi Lovato Strikes a Chord With ’29,’ Evanescence’s ’00s Classic Returns to ‘Life’ & More

Welcome to Billboard Pro’s Trending Up column, where we take a closer look at the songs, artists, curiosities and trends that have caught the music industry’s attention. Some have come out of nowhere, others have taken months to catch on, and all of them could become ubiquitous in the blink of a TikTok clip. This week: Demi Lovato’s “29” starts an TikTok trend revisiting past traumas, while an Evanescence discount inspires more nostalgic remembrances, and a New York Mets pitcher’s dramatic entrance routine makes a viral hit out of a late-’10s EDM banger.  Demi Lovato’s “29” Inspires Fans to Look Back in Anger [embedded content] Demi Lovato has sparked a sobering but therapeutic conversation with their fans online this week, following the release of her song “29.” Many believ...

HVDES Revives Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life” With Angsty Drum & Bass Remix: Listen

90’s kids: grab some Capri Sun, dump it into your morning coffee, and get ready to time-travel back to 2003, when “Bring Me To Life” was soundtracking cry-ragers from NY to LA. Bass music producer HVDES has tapped into Evanescence’s generational rock anthem, flipping the gothic nu-metal tune into a wild drum & bass rendition. Tonal growls and neurofunk bass patches are at the heart of the remix, which uses frenetic drum programming to drive the arrangement home for a proper 2021 electronic makeover. The remix also comes paired with an Ergo Proxy anime audiovisual, which, well, brings the remix to life with its cyberpunk vibes.  Check out the clip below. Evanescence Are Stronger and Louder Than Ever

Strength has always been at the core of Evanescence. Since the group’s 1995 beginnings, vocalist/pianist Amy Lee has used her voice to reclaim something—usually herself—being loud, disruptive and bold in the process. With the release of the band’s first original album in nearly a decade, The Bitter Truth, that strength is clearer than ever, and she’s reclaiming even more this time. Maybe it’s because she had to. Lee and bassist Tim McCord were both dealing with personal cases of grief before collective mourning absorbed the whole population—and that reckoning and pain comes through on the record, especially in the gloomy poetry and vivid imagery. It’s vulnerable, but more than anything, it’s empowering. “Oh, survival hurts / But I keep breathing in,” she sings on the aptly-titled “Broken P...

Evanescence Urge Fans to Speak Up in ‘Use My Voice’ Video

A couple weeks after the release of the inspiring anthem “Use My Voice,” Evanescence has shared a new visual for it. Directed by Eric Howell, who directed Voice From The Stone, the video follows Amy Lee, her bandmates and a variety of other activists armed with flags, flares and signs in protest. And opening the video with an image of the White House, it’s pretty clear that the band is aiming this message toward the Trump administration. “This is an era of awakening, and full of powerful beauty,” Amy Lee said in a statement. “I hope to inspire others to seek truth, find their own voices and use them as I step up to use mine. Don’t let anybody speak for you. Only you can do that.” The track has enlisted a powerhouse of talent, including The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen, Halestorm’s Lzzy H...

Evanescence Enlist The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen, Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale and More for ‘Use My Voice’

Evanescence, like a number of celebrities, are using their fame to urge their fans to vote. Thus, the group released the apropos “Use My Voice” to help spread that message. Not only does the song bring the vocal and melodic power that the band always brings to the table, but they also want their fans to use their voices to speak out against injustice. “This is an era of awakening, and full of powerful beauty,” Amy Lee said in a statement. “I hope to inspire others to seek truth, find their own voices and use them as I step up to use mine. Don’t let anybody speak for you. Only you can do that.” “Use My Voice” also enlists the talents of The Pretty Reckless’ Taylor Momsen, Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale, violinist Lindsey Stirling and Within...

Evanescence Share Kaleidoscopic Video for ‘The Game Is Over’

A few days after sharing the audio, Evanescence has released the video for “The Game Is Over,” the second single to arrive from The Bitter Truth, which is the group’s first studio album of originals in nine years. The video, which was shot by the band on their respective iPhones and directed by P.R. Brown, is a stark look at the chaos that the past few months have wrought on folks’ mental health (which is a theme that the song tackles). Here’s what Lee had to say about the song: This song is about being sick of the facade. The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable, or what’s not going to make you unpleasant or too ‘weird’ to be around...

Evanescence Share Second Single ‘The Game Is Over’

Evanescence released “Wasted on You” back in April, which comes from their first album in nine years. Now, the group shared another hard rocker in “The Game Is Over.” On the song, Amy Lee and company tackle inauthenticity and the pressures of maintaining a facade in modern society. Here’s what Lee had to say about the song: This song is about being sick of the facade. The disguises we wear for others to make them feel comfortable, the inside feelings being so different than what we show on the outside to fit within the boundaries of what’s socially acceptable, or what’s not going to make you unpleasant or too ‘weird’ to be around. “The Game is Over” is a promise to myself and out loud that I’m going to be more of my real, inner self on the outside–not lock her up because she can’t be conta...
