The highly anticipated film Dune has opened to tremendous results, especially overseas, raking in $36.8 million USD at the global office within the first 24 hours of its premiere. According to Deadline, the film is tracking extremely well and opened to the number one position in virtually every market. Tapping into this year’s Emmys, streaming giant HBO Max released a new sizzle reel offering a first look at some of its upcoming series, including the highly anticipated James Gunn Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker. Despite just a few seconds long, the clip fully encapsulates John Cena‘s hilarious and delusional character, who walks into a restaurant in his Peacemaker outfit. Netflix topped HBO with the most Emmy awards for the first time during Sunday’s ceremony. Between the primetime awards announced on Sunday and the Creative Arts accolades handed out during ceremonies last week, Netflix took home a total of 44 awards this year. The streamer, which tied the Emmys record for most awards in a single year, previously set by CBS in 1974, received trophies in several top categories, including wins for drama series (The Crown) and limited series (The Queen’s Gambit). Netflix beat out the total number of awards won by the next two companies combined. Last week, Venom: Let There Be Carnage ran its test screening in London and the response from the movie has been strongly positive, but a highlight seems to be the film’s post-credit scene. Over the weekend, DC Comics fans celebrated Batman Day. As an event started in 2014 to mark the 75th anniversary of the first appearance of the Dark Knight, the date was chosen to also coincide with San Diego Comic-Con. Dune director Denis Villeneuve has offered his own criticism on the artistic substance of Marvel films. Villeneuve is not the first director to weigh in on the debate as Martin Scorsese once compared MCU movies to theme parks. After speaking to The Direct, Villeneuve revealed that Marvel movies “have turned us into zombies a bit.” He claims that the issue “is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others.” He added, “Just think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposal and, therefore, political.
