New ‘Scream’ Featurette Details Origins of the Iconic Ghostface Mask

In anticipation of the upcoming Scream installment, Paramount has now released a new featurette detailing how Ghostface‘s iconic mask came to be. Viewable above, the minute-long clip features the original film’s writer Kevin Williamson explaining how the production team first came across the mask and why they decided to adopt it into the movie. “No one could agree on a mask and I remember we were in a location scout, and we found Ghostface,” recalls Williamson. “It was in a box of stuff in a garage that we were location scouting in, and we asked the owner if we could take it because Wes [Craven] immediately looked at it and said, ‘This is like the famous Scream painting.’ And so we took that to our production and we said, ‘Riff on this and see if you can make something like this.’ The...

‘The Wheel of Time’, ‘The Last of Us’, ‘The Sandman’: The Battle of the Adaptations is Heating Up

In many ways, adapting a beloved franchise for television is a thankless task. You’re often working with an unwieldy source material (be that a comic book, video game, or novel) that doesn’t easily translate into the episodic structure of TV. Plus, you’ve got to grapple with the high expectations of the fans — and their unmitigated fury if you mess it up. And it’s hardly a guaranteed win: for every Walking Dead, Watchmen, or Game of Thrones, there’s those that fizzle or flop, like Shadow and Bone, The Alienist, or, indeed, the much-hated final series of Thrones. Despite that, three of the giants of the streaming industry — Netflix, HBO, and Amazon — are betting on a trio of new re-workings of beloved franchises. Next month, Amazon launches The Wheel of Time, a sprawling, high-fantasy epic ...

Netflix is Changing How It Ranks Its Most Popular Shows and Movies

Netflix is changing up the way it ranks its most popular shows. The adjustment was explained in a recent letter from the company to its shareholders. The streaming platform has historically based its rankings on the completion of at least the first two minutes of a show or film in the first 28 days following its debut. At last month’s Code Conference, however, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared new data that ranked the company’s top series and films according to their total viewed hours rather than according to the two-minute metric. In comparison, the two standards produced slightly different lists of what could be considered Netflix’s most popular offerings. Ranking content formulated on most-viewed hours will likely yield a more accurate look at what viewers are streaming, given that ma...

Danny DeVito Joins Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Cast

Danny DeVito has officially joined the cast of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and Rideback’s Haunted Mansion reboot. Not a lot of information regarding the veteran actor’s character is known, except for the fact that he will play “a smug professor.” This role marks DeVito’s first big-screen studio performance since 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level and he will star alongside LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson. Dear White People’s Justin Simien will helm the reboot as his big-budget studio debut, Katie Dippold will write the film, Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will produce while Nick Reynolds executive produce. Mel Gibson Joins ‘John Wick’ Prequel Series ‘The Continental’

Mel Gibson has been officially cast in the upcoming John Wick prequel television series The Continental. According to Deadline, the Lethal Weapon veteran actor will be joining the Lionsgate Television Group project to play a character named Cormac, although little is known about him for now. The series itself will bring the audience back to New York City in the ’70s and follow a young version of the Continental’s owner Winston Scott. While he’s portrayed by Ian McShane in the movie franchise, the actor has said he won’t be reprising the role for the tv series, although he might do voiceovers. “What we’re exploring in The Continental is the young Winston and how it came to be that he and his team of confederates found their way into this hotel which we have met for the f...

Daniel Craig on Lessons Learned From Bond, and That Shocking Ending to ‘No Time to Die’

This article contains significant spoilers for No Time to Die. As No Time To Die continues its streak of domination at cinemas worldwide — to the extent that it’s being feted in some corners as the savior of the film industry — audiences and fans are having the chance to consider the film’s elegiac send-off to Daniel Craig, who is retiring from the role of James Bond. The film’s conclusion sees (spoiler alert) the first-ever time in the franchise’s almost 60-year history that Bond is killed off. It’s put a full-stop on Craig’s 15-year run and, while it has certainly divided critics and audiences, it also gives fans a chance to reflect on his mammoth role and dwell in the decades-long fantasy that Craig has given to the world of Bond. With the Daniel Craig-James Bond franchise com...
