Alabama Shakes drummer Steven William Johnson is no longer face a charge of child abuse in Limestone County, Alabama, The Associated Press reports. When reached by Pitchfork, Johnson’s attorneys Nick Lough and Marcus Helstowski shared the following statement: Steve Johnson maintained his innocence throughout the course of this entire ordeal. Just like anyone charged with a crime, Mr. Johnson had to wait for his day in court. People are quick to make judgments and assumptions based on catchy headlines when cases like this first surface. We’re thankful that after more than a year this allegation has been put to rest and Mr. Johnson’s name has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Johnson was arrested in March after reportedly being indicted on charges of “willful torture, willful abuse and cruelly...

Back in October, Thom Yorke performed at an event called Letters Live at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Solo, Yorke played a song from his band the Smile called “Free in the Knowledge.” Yorke’s performance has now been published online, as Stereogum notes. Watch below. The Smile—the trio of Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and drummer Tom Skinner—debuted during a Glastonbury livestream earlier this year. Recently, the band rehearsed a number of new songs—including “Free in the Knowledge”—on Instagram Live. The Smile take their name from a Ted Hughes poem. In an interview with NME, Greenwood explained, “The Smile came about from just wanting to work on music with Thom in lockdown. We didn’t have much time, but we just wanted to finish some songs together. It’s been very stop-start, but it’s felt a happ...
DJ St3v3 is making a powerful and unequivocal statement about his homeland in his latest single, “Africa Is Not A Country.” Despite Africa being the world’s second-largest continent, you’d be surprised how many people somehow think it’s a country. St3v3’s new single gets the message across with thunderous bass and blistering sound design in an arrangement designed for music festivals. “Africa Is Not A Country” is a ferocious, chest-thumping trap banger and an ode to DJ St3v3’s Ethiopian roots. It’s a quiet November night when Kai Wachi makes the second-to-last stop of his “Muscleville” tour in the City of Brotherly Love. Thanksgiving weekend sends Philadelphians home to the burbs for a tryptophan coma, the Eagles game enjoyed from sunken couches through half-shut eyes. One might expect this show to be a sleeper, but there’s a ghostly air blowing off the Delaware that says a storm is coming. The venue teems with headbangers as the Boise-born bass music producer takes the stage. Herein lies the intersection of wook and meathead. A pashmina-clad crowd sings, “electrify every cell, ‘cause I don’t wanna flatline” while visuals of skulls and flowers pulse from psychedelic swirls. Wachi’s signature, vicious blend of dubstep and metal drives the life-death motif unfolding. A...
