HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Mark LoMoglio / Getty Kenan Thompson can now add hosting the Emmys to his long-growing list of career accomplishments. Saturday Night Live’s longest-running cast member Kenan Thompson has been tapped to host this year’s edition of the Emmy Awards, airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock. Per Variety, Thompson was chosen after a “lengthy search” conducted by NBC, the Academy, and Emmys producers Done+Dusted and Reggie Hudlin, who was frantically searching for an A-list name to host the annual award’s show. Luckily for them, they didn’t have to look too far, being that Thompson is literally a mainstay in the network. Quinta Brunson Makes History With 3 Comedy Emmy Noms for ‘Abbott Elementary’

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Christopher Willard / Getty In its first season, Abbott Elementary was extremely well-received by critics and fans alike who praised the show for its wholesome and hilarious portrayal of a group of public school teachers in Philadelphia. Now the show (and its cast) are getting praise from the Television Academy with seven Emmy nominations. Including three for the show’s creator, Quinta Brunson, who is the first Black woman to be nominated for outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy and writing for a comedy series (for the “Pilot”).  At 32, Brunson is also the youngest Black woman ever nominated in the comedy acting category, per Variety.  If she wins in the acting and writing categories, Brunson will join legendary actress Isabel San...

Super Bowl Halftime Show & Grammys Have Never Won Top Emmy for Variety Programs: Could This Be the Year?

The Grammy Awards and the Super Bowl Halftime Show have a few things in common. Both, of course, have been fixtures on network television for decades, but neither has even won the top Emmy Award for variety programming — an award currently called outstanding variety special (live). Both shows are nominated in that category again this year. Will one of these shows finally prevail this year? Quite possibly. Each received five Emmy nominations this year, which is more than the other three nominees in this category — The Oscars (which received three nods), The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back! (which received two) and Live In Front Of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff’rent Strokes (which also received two). The Grammys became a live telecast in March 1971, but they assumed a hi...

The thing about the Emmy Awards is that there are so many of them. When the nominations are announced each fateful annual Tuesday in July, the nice folks who show up early to announce them (this year, J.B. Smooth and Melissa Fumero were charming and capable) only cover a fraction of what’s then posted online in a massive PDF document (this year’s is 58 pages long). Buried within this document are no shortage of delights and surprises, which may not make headlines but do warrant a little attention. So here are this year’s unexpected favorites: Shows you might have thought would go totally ignored by the TV Academy, stars who you might not have even known were working in television, and seriously overdue talent finally getting their roses. 2022 Emmy Nominations: Succession, Abbott Elementary, Pam & Tommy, Squid Game and More Score Big

In the era of so much TV, each Emmy Awards nominations morning brings with it a degree of chaos. In 2022, that remains consistent, though there are familiar faces returning to the dance as well as fresh voices. As many predicted, the third season of Succession (which dominated in 2020) was the nominations count leader with 25, including what feels like a metric ton of acting nominations across nearly all categories. Meanwhile, Netflix’s three big plays in the drama series category — Ozark, Stranger Things, and Squid Game — didn’t perform outrageously well. All did secure Outstanding Drama Series nods, though, and with 14 nominations for Squid Game and 13 each for Ozark and Stranger Things, that’s nothing to sneeze at. Apple TV+’s Severance (Consequence‘s best show of 2022 so far) also pick...

Cedric The Entertainer & Company Pay Homage To Biz Markie At Emmy Awards

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: CBS Photo Archive / Getty On Sunda night (Sept. 19), Cedric The Entertainer hosted the 73rd annual Emmy Awards and keeping it a buck for the culture decided to pay tribute to the late-great Biz Markie with the help of some celebrity friends. To open the awards show, Cedric kicked things off by performing a rendition of Biz Markie’s classic cut “Just A Friend,” but he didn’t go at it alone as LL Cool J, Lil Dicky, and Rita Wilson (Tom Hank’s wife), spit their own bars much to the delight of the small audience in attendance. Wilson’s verse only lasted a few bars and mainly focused on Sesame Street, but even in those few seconds of rapping she showed and proved to be better on the mic than her son, Shabba Hanks aka Chet Hanks. Wouldn’t be surprised if Soulja...
