Add Brian Eno to your list of stars charmingly unimpressed with NFTs. When asked about today’s hottest economic scam in an interview with The Crypto Syllabus, the legendary musician said he wouldn’t be dabbling in the trend any time soon. “I’ve been approached several times to ‘make an NFT.’ So far nothing has convinced me that there is anything worth making in that arena,” Eno said. “‘Worth making’ for me implies bringing something into existence that adds value to the world, not just to a bank account. If I had primarily wanted to make money I would have had a different career as a different kind of person. I probably wouldn’t have chosen to be an artist. NFTs seem to me just a way for artists to get a little piece of the action from global capitalism, our own cute little version of...
Electronic duo TNGHT have released the new song “Brick Figures,” as well as its accompanying music video. Listen to the track below. The production team comprised of Hudson Mohawke and Lunice released “Brick Figures” as part of Glasgow label LuckyMe’s annual Advent Calendar charity compilation, which also features songs from Jacques Greene, Cid Rim, HIRA, and Seiho. Industrial sound effects make up the beat of the instrumental song, which Lunice described in a statement as “the kind of music Lego characters would be listening to on their own time.” Rather than Lego characters, however, two naked, distorted figures convulse under a strobe light in the song’s music video, directed by Dan Streit and Christopher Rutledge. Arca has four new albums out this week. Yes, four: The eccentric electronic artist has shared KICK ii, KicK iii, kick iiii, and kiCK iiiii. They mark the final installments of her KicK anthology, which she began last year. Back in November, the Venezuelan artist announced that she’d be releasing KicK iii and kick iiii on the same scheduled release day of KICK ii, the follow-up to 2020’s Grammy-nominated KiCk i. With kiCK iiiii tacked on as a surprise release, that means Arca has just put out an impressive 47 new songs that clock in at over 145 minutes of music. While she describes KicK iii as “mutant club music,” KICK ii sees the artist introduce some reggaeton influences, and kick iiii feels like more straightforward mainstream pop — or, at least as mainstrea...
Grimes is back with another new song. Today, the art-pop singer shared “Player of Games,” which you can listen to below. Grimes first teased the song on Instagram Wednesday with a video of her, naturally, playing video games. That seems straightforward enough, but the clip also featured an unknown player donning some kind of spacesuit of armor, which tracks with her whole “Martian Technocracy” aesthetic. In keeping with the artist’s style, the single builds from crowning, bass-heavy synths to a club beat, with Grimes’ famous chipmunk vocals tying it all together. That track marked the debut of NPC, the “AI Girl Group” Grimes launched so ...
More than seven years after a tumultuous departure from Crystal Castles, Alice Glass is ready to debut her first solo album, PREY//IV. Out on January 28th, 2022, it includes the newly revealed lead single “BABY TEETH,” which is streaming below. Spanning 13 tracks, the studio effort also includes “SUFFER AND SWALLOW,” which Glass delivered earlier this year while first teasing the then-untitled album. It’s her second solo project following her 2017 self-titled EP. Pre-orders for PREY//IV are ongoing. The glitchy “BABY TEETH” features upbeat production belying the subject matter that lies beneath. In a statement, Glass described it as “probably the darkest and most hopeless track on my record, but it sounds misleadingly hopeful,” adding that she likes to make songs that fans can dance to whe...
100 gecs are back with the new song “mememe,” out now via Big Beat Records. The single offers the first look at Dylan Brady and Laura Les’ follow up to 1000 gecs, their 2019 hodgepodge debut that blew up on TikTok and brought hyperpop (and Brady’s coveted producer’s touch) to a greater audience. In the grand (albeit short) tradition of the duo, “mememe” blows out pop melodies, as heavy bass and guitar crunch meld with autotuned vocals and glitchy production. “You’ll never really know anything about me,” goes Brady’s refrain, which amps up the song’s angsty pop-punk feel. Watch the song’s accompanying video below. 100 gecs have teased their sophomore album, 10,000 gecs, on social media, but the record hasn’t yet received a proper release date. Since 1000 gecs, the duo have remixed the ...
Syrian singer Omar Souleyman was arrested in Turkey on Wednesday (November 17th), according to Agence France-Presse. He was detained for questioning about alleged ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Turkish media has reported Souleyman was detained on an arrest warrant issued for “membership of a terrorist organization.” This particular charge has led to the imprisonment of tens of thousands of people in Turkey over the past decade as president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has cracked down on the PKK, which is considered as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the UK, EU and US. His manager told the news agency that Souleyman was brought in after a local media report claimed the musician had traveled to a region of Syria controlled by YPG, a local offshoot of the PKK. He is expected to be r...

Chicago singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist NNAMDÏ has announced his new EP, Are You Happy, out this Friday (November 12th) via Sooper Records. He also shared the new single “Backseat” as a preview. Production on the EP is handled by Chicago electronic artist Lynyn — the new moniker of fellow Monobody bandmember and longtime friend Conor Mackey — making Are You Happy the first project NNAMDÏ didn’t produce himself. Fusing NNAMDÏ’s effortless mix of hip-hop and R&B with Lynyn’s experimental beats, the EP spans five tracks and includes a remix of “Glass Casket,” which originally appeared on 2020’s BRAT. The off-kilter production of “Backseat” helps to showcase NNAMDÏ’s ability to transition between smooth R&B vocals and fast-paced rhymes. “Cranking up the gas at the drop...
On a recent radio show, DJ and Worldwide FM host Helfetica showed that the unifying power of electronic music spans multiple generations of listeners. Case in point: Helfetica brought her 100-year-old grandmother onto the show to discuss her impressions of electronic music, as well as her favorite records. While there’s often an impression the elderly are set in their ways, Helfetica describes her grandmother—affectionately referred to as “OB”—as “staggeringly open minded.” OB has twin passions in jazz and electronic music, and the two worlds oftenn converge on her favorite records, such as the ethereal Floating Points and Pharaoh Sanders collaboration, “Movement 1.” The two discussed their connection with a wide variety of electronic genres r...
TNGHT have returned with their new single “TUMS,” as well as its accompanying music video. Stream the clip below. Arriving via Warp Records/LuckyMe, the visual for the largely instrumental EDM track features dozens of creepy male faces wearing off-putting, oversized grins as they distort, grow, and shapeshift into one another over a wobbling, minimalist beat and laugh track. Taking cues from Instagram, the Dan Streit-directed clip lampoons their identities by tagging a photo of 50 Cent and Al Pacino on the red carpet of 2008’s Righteous Kill, a stock image of two unnamed doctors, and more with their own social handles. “The curse is over it has finished,” reads the video description.
