He had been suffering from an undisclosed illness, but his death was described as “sudden” by Frank Uhle, the managing director of his record label, SPV. “We were shocked and saddened to hear the news of Klaus Schulze’s sudden death,” Uhle said in a statement. “We lose and will miss a good personal friend – one of the most influential and important composers of electronic music – a man of conviction and an exceptional artist. Our thoughts in this hour are with his wife, sons and family. His always cheerful nature, his innovative spirit and his impressive body of work remain indelibly rooted in our memories.” A pioneer of the krautrock and techno genres, t...
Gabriel “Tokkie” du Preez, the adopted son of Die Antwoord’s Yolandi Visser (aka Anri du Toit) and Ninja (aka Watkin Jones), has accused the couple of physical and sexual abuse and exploitation. The allegations surfaced through a 44-minute interview with the South African group’s former filmmaker Ben Jay Crossman and a subsequent sitdown with News24. du Preez and his younger sister were adopted by Die Antwoord in 2010 — when he was just nine years old — under foster parenting agreements with their biological mother. They would go on to appear in music videos like “I Fink U Freeky” and “Ugly Boy” while being raised with du Toit and Jones’ biological daughter and a boy from another poor family in Johannesburg. “They adopted me to be a slave,” he recalled about the experience. “They made me f...

John Carpenter has revealed his soundtrack for the upcoming Stephen King adaptation Firestarter will release digitally on May 13th, the same day the movie arrives in theaters and streaming via Peacock. Along with the album announcement comes its first preview in the closer “Firestarter (End Titles).” Carpenter composed the score with his close collaborators, son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies. Though it stands as their first film accompaniment outside of Carpenter’s Halloween series — which has included the 2018 Halloween revival and 2021’s Halloween Kills — the trio has a long history of working together on projects like the ongoing Lost Themes albums. The musical motifs hinted at in the film’s first trailer suggested a more supernatural tone for the team that fits with the pyroc...
Zola Jesus has released “Desire,” the second single from her upcoming album, Arkhon. Stream it below. Although singer-songwriter Nika Roza Danilova announced her solo project’s first full-length in five years by acknowledging that she had embraced an unfamiliar, collaborative spirit and “needed new blood,” her latest song is a sparse, completely internal quest for closure. “‘Desire’ was written in one sitting at my piano at home. The song was an exorcism for my pain and lack of closure around heartbreak,” she shared in a statement. “Sometimes songs are written simply for the cathartic effect of playing them. This is one of those songs. Performing it feels like the most tangible way to experience that closure for myself.” Advertisement Related Video Danilova’s emotional release is...
Last month, Oliver Sim finally followed the path of his bandmates in The xx and put out his first solo single, “Romance with a Memory.” Today, the musician has shared another song called “Fruit,” which is also produced by Jamie xx, and an accompanying music video. “Fruit” is a sweeping number that lives somewhere between a ballad and a banger, recalling saccharine love songs of the ’80s. But “Fruit” isn’t an ode to a lover; instead, it acts as Sim’s proclamation of self-acceptance, rejoicing in queer identity. Those familiar with Jamie xx’s solo material will recognize his kaleidoscopic, clubby touch, though Sim’s deep vocals ensure the track is all his own. The music video for “Fruit” was directed by French filmmaker Yann Gonzalez, and it depicts Sim as a pop star yearning to embrac...
Flume has teamed up with Caroline Polachek today on the new single “Sirens,” the latest preview of the Australian electronic artist’s forthcoming album Palaces. Co-written and co-produced with Polachek’s frequent collaborator Danny L Harle, this marks the longtime pals’ first musical release together. “Sirens” juxtaposes Polachek’s delicate, enchanting vocals with titillating industrial production. The track’s lyrics were inspired by Polachek’s stint living in London at the height of the pandemic, feeling helpless as blaring ambulance horns constantly zoomed past her street: “If I could/ With just a sigh/ I’d stop the tide/ Of siren cries,” she chants over Flume’s clanging beat. “Caroline and I had known each other for years, but she’d just moved to LA and we bumped into each other living ...
