Crypto lending platform Celsius filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 13, 2022. Although the Celsius case involves digital assets, it remains subject to United States Bankruptcy Code under the Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. While this may be, a series of unusual events have ensued since Celsius filed for bankruptcy. For instance, Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge Martin Glenn — the judge overseeing the Celsius case — stated on Oct. 17 that the court will look abroad for guidance. Glenn specifically mentioned that “Legal principles that are applicable in the United Kingdom are not binding on courts in the United States,” yet he noted that these “may be persuasive in addressing legal issues that may arise in this case.” While the treatment of the Celsius c...
Interest in Web3 continues to grow despite the crypto bear market. A recent article from McKinsey noted that venture capital investments in Web3 exceeded $18 billion during the first half of 2022. Findings from Cointelegraph Research also show that Web3 attracted the most interest from venture capitalists in comparison to other blockchain sectors during Q2 of this year. While notable, a lack of diversity has become apparent within the Web3 sector. For instance, it was found that only 16% of nonfungible token (NFT) creators are women. Although this number is low, women are taking an interest in owning digital assets. Given this, industry experts believe that a lack of education around Web3 is creating a barrier to entry for women, especially for those who are from underrepresented reg...
The Country Music Association (CMA) has teamed with Discovery Education to help students explore various STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) career paths within the country music industry. The program, titled Working in Harmony: Every Voice Is Instrumental, targets students in grades 3-12 and offers several free resources to help students learn about STEAM-based careers in the country music industry. The CMA marks the first music organization to partner with Discovery Education, with the Working in Harmony content being accessible online to 30 million students and 1.3 million educators across the country. “We have been looking at how to engage the next generation of fans with what we are doing in education,” CMA CEO Sarah Trahern tells Billboard. “This program seemed pe...
In 2021, Mikkel Eriksen and Tor. E. Hermansen — the Norwegian record producers better known as Stargate who made a name for themselves with Mis-Teeq’s jam “One Night Stand” — debuted their Los Angeles Academy for Artists & Music Production (LAAMP) in Santa Monica. Like so many other grand ideas conceived that year, LAAMP was born of the mandated lockdowns. More specifically, the pandemic-driven solitude reminded the California-based duo just how integral collaboration is to the music-making process. Five years after their breakthrough 2001 hit, Stargate broke ground by co-writing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick,” an unforgettable chart-topping heartbreak single, opening up further opportunities for Eriksen and Hermansen to write and produce for artists like Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Celine Dion, and ...
Feedback hit the mic as I trailed in front of the speakers for a second, bowing my head and taking a breath before I uttered: “I know what happens when the months get colder.” I have fallen into the crevasse of suicidal ideation a couple of times. Once, with a plan, means, and timeframe, the other simply ideas of a mind that could not see a clearing. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a month that looms heavy in the world of music and the arts. We’ve lost so many — Avicii, Kurt Cobain, Eliott Smith, Chris Cornell, it is a list that goes on far too long. As we begin, here are some critical facts about Suicide from NAMI, with additional links for you to learn more. As far as individual impact goes: 79% of all people who die by suicide are male. Although more women than men atte...
In February 2010, Patti Smith played a benefit concert for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. While the sold-out show would’ve been a great moment for the organization on its own, it ended up as the beginning of something much bigger. At that show, a man named Dem Hopkins danced the night away before winning a signed poster and meet and greet with Smith herself. But Hopkins was more than just a fan having a good time. He had previously run a well-known Chicago punk club called Oz, and he felt a strong connection with the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, as he had once lived on the streets himself. On the following Monday, Hopkins called Michael Nameche, the coalition’s Director of Development with an interesting proposition. He wanted to hold another benefit show headlined by a reu...
