With so many new songs released in 2021, it’s difficult to remember all of them, let alone keep track of each one. So we made a playlist with as much dance music as we could find. At the beginning of 2021, I set out to make a single playlist to house as much of the electronic dance music released in the year as I could. With help from the Reddit EDM community and multiple other sources, I was able to gather over 2,000 songs in one playlist, all released last year. After the release of his hotly anticipated Dawn FM album, it’s clear The Weeknd‘s penchant for dance music is more voracious than ever. The Weeknd has long championed electronic dance music, collaborating with the likes of Gesaffelstein, Daft Punk, and Disclosure, among others. However, Dawn FM twists the knife into this curiosity by presenting the most dance-forward album of his career. And it’s also his most creative yet. The album plays out like a radio station during a late-night drive in the 80s, featuring sultry interludes from Jim Carrey and Quincy Jones. But despite its escapist narrative and lovelorn motifs, at its core, the phantasmagoric Dawn FM was designed for dance parties. The proof is in the pudding. The Weeknd joined forces with disco-pop extraordina...

To calculate each band’s position on the chart, 24/7 Tempo developed an intricate system that calculated popularity based on chart performance, certified album and single sales, monthly Spotify listeners, and Wikipedia pageviews from August 2011 to September 2021. Imagine Dragons and One Direction came in the top two spots, respectively, followed by The Chainsmokers. The chart-topping duo reportedly had 17 songs in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, where they amassed a total of 291 weeks, buoyed by their most successful song “Closer” (with Halsey). Get ready for the best years in electronic music history, says David Guetta. “I think the next few years will be the best years for dance music in history,” declared the DJ and chart-topping producer in a recent interview with the Evening Standard. With the uprooting of many lives across the globe during the pandemic, a myriad of issues followed, like the deterioration of mental health. Since fans and musicians were unable to connect in-person, they had to make an abrupt and not-so-smooth transition into livestreaming, NFTs, and the metaverse, among other mediums.
