This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. The Pitch: Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), a sheltered young woman with an all-encompassing 1960s obsession, leaves the English countryside home she shares with her grandmother to study fashion in London. When life in the dorms leaves her feeling stressed and isolated, Ellie finds a room of her own to rent in Soho. At first, the move seems ideal: Her landlady, Miss Collins (Diana Rigg, in her final role) is stern but kind. The room appeals to Ellie’s need for space and her aesthetic. And it comes with an exciting bonus: Every night, she’s transported to 1966, where she follows a glamorous young woman named Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she romps through Swinging London’s nightlife. Alternately watching Sandy...
Focus Features has finally unleashed a full-length teaser for its upcoming psychological drama Last Night in Soho. Watch the trailer below. The time-hopping thriller stars Thomasin McKenzie as Eloise, a fashion student and brand-new London transplant who finds she’s able to be transported back to the 1960s in her dreams. Each night she encounters (or is it embodies?) a nightclub singer named Sandie (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her dashing boyfriend Jack (Matt Smith). “I’ve got this kind of gift,” the aspiring designer tells a friend during her waking hours. “I can see people, places, things others can’t. They’re not just dreams. It really happened.” Advertisement Related Video However, the swinging parties and glittering nightlife of Eloise’s slumbers take a dark turn when she realizes Sandie wil...
Sparks have released a lot of albums across their five-decade career. Like, a lot of albums. There have been more than two dozen studio albums, a live album, and a chunk of compilations for good measure. It’s much more than just an impressive body of work, it’s a sheer marvel. It’s the kind of output that could only come from music lifers, whose dedication and artistic passion for pop music rivals the DNA bonds that tie together brother bandmates Ron and Russell Mael. Filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) certainly knows this, which is presumably why his long-awaited and lovingly crafted documentary The Sparks Brothers (in theaters June 18) offers a detailed examination of the band’s career and lasting influence on musicians and creatives (the film’s tagline is “yo...

The psychological thriller arrives October 22nd starring Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit), Matt Smith (The Crown, Doctor Who), and our 2020 TV performer of the year, Anya Taylor-Joy (Queen’s Gambit). Last Night in Soho follows fashion-obsessed Eloise (McKenzie), who suffers a chronological lapse and encounters her idol Sandy (Taylor-Joy), then a wannabe singer. Unfortunately, there’s a darkness lurking underneath this version of London, and Eloise’s sense of...
The clock has started ticking on a new adaptation of The Running Man, the 1982 novel from Stephen King via his pseudonym Richard Bachman. Deadline reports that Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) will direct. King’s tale unfolds in the unimaginably distant future of 2025. America has indulged its most dystopian corporate impulses and now relies on the Games Network to placate the restless populace. Ben Richards of Co-Op City is more hard-up than most, and in the hopes of securing his wife and daughter’s future, he makes a desperate bargain: He agrees to appear on The Running Man, Games Network’s most beloved yet dangerous program. The book got swept up in late-eighties Ahnold-mania, and something that vaguely resembled the original story exploded into theaters in 1987. Schwarzenegger’s well-oi...
This review is part of our Sundance 2021 coverage. The Pitch: Sparks has been around for just shy of 50 years, and have influenced just about every major pop act since the 1970s –from New Order to Weird Al Yankovic. They’re one of the greatest bands of all time, but you probably haven’t heard of them. That is, of course, unless you’re Edgar Wright, pop culture vagabond and Sparks superfan, who brings his giddy, high-tilt cinematic energy to a two-and-a-half-hour chronicle of two California-born brothers who made it to the top of the pop charts, and have spent the last several decades reinventing themselves with every new album and experimentation. Along the way, he talks to artists and fans who’ve grown up with their work (Jason Schwartzman, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Fred Armisen), and i...

Edgar Wright is staying spooky. As Deadline reports, the Baby Driver filmmaker has added another project to his plate. It’s called Stage 13, a ghost story from Amblin Partners that reads like a ghoulish comedy in the vein of, say, Warm Bodies. Written by Saturday Night Live alum Simon Rich, who based the screenplay on his own short story-of-the-same-name, Stage 13 follows a silent film-era actress who has haunted the titular soundstage for decades. Her afterlife changes when she meets a struggling director, and the two find a way to work together. It’s easy to see why this project would tickle Wright’s funny bone. The story digs right into his roots, back when he was still cutting his teeth on Spaced and Shaun of the Dead. So, this should be quite a delight, all things considered. Editors&...
‘Scott Pilgrim’ cast reunites for Entertainment Weekly script reading. To this day, Edgar Wright’s 2010 flick Scott Pilgrim vs. the World remains an essential entry in the millennial film canon. As promised, in celebration of its 10-year anniversary, the cast, crew, and Wright himself virtually reunited for a live reading of the entire script. The movie’s personnel was impressive a decade back, but today its full cast is genuinely something to marvel at. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Aubrey Plaza, Alison Pill, Mae Whitman, Ellen Wong, Satya Bhabha, Brandon Routh, and Mark Webber were all miraculously available for the reading. Also present were Bryan Lee O’Malley, creator of the original Scott Pilgrim graphic novel, and th...
