Ukheshe Partners with KCB to Boost Payment Services in East Africa

Ukheshe has partnered with the Kenya-based lender KCB Bank Kenya to issue both physical and virtual banking cards across East Africa. According to Victor Ndlovu, VP of Ukheshe Africa, the deal will include other innovative digital products such as QR issuing and acquiring. “By joining forces with KCB we are well-placed to address several open-loop market opportunities while boosting wider consumer adoption. Carrefour has officially introduced its new online shopping platform in Kenya. Alphabet is Closing Down the Loon Project

Internet Access Reportedly Restored in Uganda

Internet access in Uganda has reportedly been restored after the Government shut it down ahead of the national election. Last week, the Uganda Communications Commission ordered telecommunications companies to immediately suspend any access and use of social media and online messaging platforms – gradually  Facebook and other social platforms were shutdowns before finally the entire country was disconnected. In an official tweet, NetBlocks, an internet freedom monitor, revealed that 13% of the East African country is seemingly back online. Rights group urges lifting Ugandan social media ban

Amnesty International is calling for Ugandan officials to lift bans on social media imposed ahead of Thursday’s election. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni announced on Tuesday that the government had shut down social media. On Jan. 9, Facebook deleted dozens of pro-Ugandan government accounts, saying they were “fake.” Museveni characterized Facebook’s action as arrogant. “It is alarming that the Ugandan authorities have suspended social media networks including Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp and restricted people’s right to freedom of expression and access to information,” said Sarah Jackson, Amnesty International’s Deputy Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes, in a press release.
