Earl Sweatshirt Poetically Reckons With The Turbulent State Of The World Via ‘SICK!’ Album [Review]

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: NBC / Getty Earl Sweatshirt never seems overly concerned with perfection or typified standards of modern-day Hip-Hop music, although his newest project is a refined effort.  As he’s done previously via his audio releases, the California native’s latest studio album SICK! points to a personal and poetical reckoning of the state of the world that breaks through the insular themes of his past. Tan Cressida, the label started by Earl Sweatshirt, continues its Warner Bros Records partnership with SICK!, the third released under this union that follows the excellent Feet Of Clay drop and the subsequent deluxe release. SICK! sonically moves in a straighter line than Feet Of Clay, and Sweatshirt’s pen shows renewed clarity along with loads of abstract though...

Earl Sweatshirt Releases “Titanic” Single From Upcoming ‘SICK!’ LP

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Marc Grimwade / Getty Earl Sweatshirt influenced a wave of young rappers and producers who forged their own lanes and deep thinkers and poets atop murky and muted production. As a leading voice of this elite audio vanguard, the rapper and producer released a new single titled “Titanic” from his forthcoming SICK! album. Via Earl Sweatshirt’s own Tan Cressida imprint by way of Warner Bros., “Titanic” takes a shift in sound from the earlier drops from SICK! in “2010” and “Tabula Rasa” but no less impressive. Employing a cleverly disjointed double-time flow, Earl gets some adlib assistance from skateboarder and rapper Na-Kel Smith with production by Black Noi$e. Instead of sharing the lyrics, just check out the stream below because it needs to be heard as Ear...

Earl Sweatshirt Shares First Song From Upcoming LP ‘Sick!’

Earl Sweatshirt is coming out with a new album early next year. Out via Tan Cressida and Warner Records, Sick! follows 2019’s Feet of Clay EP and will debut on January 14. The rapper was originally working on an LP called The People Could Fly but scrapped the project when the pandemic hit. Shifting gears, Sweatshirt recorded the ten tracks that make up Sick! while the world was under lockdown. The cover art for the upcoming album features a silver mold of the rapper wearing a face mask, along with a photo, clove of garlic and two pills. Coinciding with the announcement, Sweatshirt gave fans a first look at the album with his new single “Tabula Rasa” featuring Armand Hammer. The song was produced by Theravada and Rob Chambers and delivered with a music video. Sweatshirt recently released a ...

Earl Sweatshirt Unveils Pandemic-Inspired Project SICK

The Los Angeles rapper also shared his brand-new single “Tabula Rasa,” which he tapped rap duo Armand Hammer (Billy Woods and Elucid) to feature on. SICK will arrive via Tan Cressida / Warner Records, marking Thebe Neruda Kgositsile’s (a.k.a. Earl) newest music since his 2019 Feet Of Clay. The 10-track pandemic-inspired project is available for pre-order. “SICK is my humble offering of 10 songs recorded in the wake of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns,” Kgositsile said. “Before the virus, I had been working on an album I named after a book I used to read with my mother (‘The People Could Fly’). Once the lockdowns hit, people couldn’t fly anymore. A wise man said art imitates life. People were sick. The People were angry and isolated and res...

Earl Sweatshirt Unveils New Single ‘2010’

In his first solo release since 2019, Earl Sweatshirt just released a brand new single “2010” via Tan Cressida and Warner Records. “2010” reflects on the rapper’s trajectory of success: spitting introspections on his meek beginnings, ripping into the track with “Imma need a bigger bag for the cohort / Try to make a millionaire outta slumdogs.” Earl fans have been anticipating new music, and new rumors circulated when Earl recently revealed coordinates that lead fans to cryptic billboards that contain an augmented reality filter. Since his 2019 Feet of Clay, Thebe Neruda Kgositsile (a.k.a. Earl) has appeared on tracks with The Alchemist, Armand Hammer, Maxo, Mike, Wiki, Zelooperz, 03 Greedo and more. The original Odd Future member helped out Zelooperz back in 2019 for “Easter Sunday” o...

The 101 Best Albums of the 2010s

Why now? Because — and there’s no reason to ignore the elephant in the room: SPIN stewardship has changed hands many, many times since we made the online jump — we got our chance. Because plenty of our favorite albums of the last 10 years could still use a boost. Because some of the already unanimously beloved music on this list still merits further praise. Because we relish excuses to sound off on the music that’s affected us the most and to enlist some of our favorite writers to do so. Because the works of art below serve as a reminder that the 2010s weren’t all bad. Because lord knows we need the distraction. Because it’s fun. There’s a lot of music that isn’t on this list. Which, duh, but plenty of artists whose work defined the decade for many, many people, including many of us, ...
