3-Year-Old Nigerian Drummer Is Ridiculously Talented: Watch

We’ve seen some great kid drummers over the years, including the über-talented Nandi Bushell, who was Consequence‘s Rookie of the Year in 2021. But rarely do we see someone as young as 3-year-old Motiriolaoluwa Emmanuel, a little boy from Nigeria who has some impressive skills behind the kit. Motiriolaoluwa (whose nickname appears to be Morolar) recently launched a TikTok account (@morolar26) and a YouTube channel, each with just a handful of videos thus far. One, in particular, shows the toddler displaying technique well beyond his years as he accompanies a children’s chorus. While his TikTok and YouTube videos have minimal views thus far, Motiriolaoluwa was recently profiled by Allnews Nigeria TV’s Budding Stars program, on which his parents discussed his passion for drums. Nandi Bushell, the 11-year-old musical prodigy who just earned Consequence’s 2021 Rookie of the Year honor, has delivered her “most challenging drum cover” yet: the complex “Forty Six & 2” by Tool. And, as always, she absolutely nails it! Not too many seasoned pros can go beat for beat with Tool’s Danny Carey, easily one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. But Nandi was certainly up to the task. With a smile on her face, Nandi offered up a few drumstick twirls and flips before launching into the epic track from Tool’s classic 1996 album Ænima. From there, she played the song like an absolute champ, crushing the heavy middle sections and rolling up her sleeves at the 4:30 mark for a killer fill. “This really was the most challenging drum cover I have done, so far,” wrote Nandi in...

She masters the intense double-kick pedal and controlled chaos of the song’s drum part, composed by former Slipknot percussionist Joey Jordison. Nandi even sports a mask of Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson to look appropriately spooky as she plays...

Of all the drum covers, the cacophonous “Duality” might be one of the most complex and truly difficult for any percussionist. However, Thomas puts on a clinic, proving his virtuosity during the YouTube playthrough. “We all go through hardships,” Thomas said in the video. “We all go through the worst thing that has ever happened to us. For me, it was losing a limb. But regardless, everybody has their struggles. Whether it be financial or even relationships, wherever it might be. We all have those frustrations and struggles.” Thomas, also a skilled bassist, was working toward becoming a pro...

How to Recreate Phil Collins’ Legendary “In the Air Tonight” Drum Fill

There is arguably no drum fill in pop music that’s more iconic than Phil Collins’ epic break in his ubiquitous 1981 hit “In the Air Tonight”. Behind the huge sound of Collins’ drums is a combination of quality gear, choice effects, and luck. It just might be the ultimate air-drumming song. “In the Air Tonight” marked Collins’ first solo single, having already established himself as a longtime member of Genesis. And with the song, Collins kicked off his solo career with a literal bang. Even Ozzy Osbourne, who fronted Black Sabbath and launched a successful solo career of his own, declared, “That drum fill is the best ever — it still sounds awesome.” While it’s one thing to master air-drumming to “In the Air Tonight”, it’s another thing to conquer it behind the kit. Thanks to a recent instru...
