Alison Wonderland Revives Whyte Fang Alias With Distorted Banger, “TIDES”: Listen

Alison Wonderland has heeded the call of the wild with her Whyte Fang alias, which made its return this week after more than six years since new music last arrived. Her new single “TIDES” dropped today under her own FMU Records banner. “This is all the weird stuff,” Wonderland playfully warned while teasing its release. She’s not wrong: during its 105 seconds, frenetic strings manage to mutate into a firestorm of distorted 808s and eerie synths. The wonky “TIDES” then sprints across the finish line with an adventurous second drop in double time, delivering a raucous rush of drum & bass. While hectic in its structure, “TIDES” is enticing in its sound design, which finds Whyte Fang bringing the arrangement together for one cohesive an...

Ivy Lab Release Forward-Thinking “Press Play” EP on Dirtybird White Label Series

Ivy Lab is in a lane of their own. When it comes to mixing hip-hop and bass music, no one does it quite like the London-based electronic duo. Last week, they went even further outside the lines with a brand new, forward-thinking EP titled Press Play, released on Dirtybird‘s White Label series. The EP is an evolution of Ivy Lab’s signature sounds, from their early days producing drum & bass to their more obscure, experimental sound. Press Play dives deep into their roots of producing obscure, cinematic, and unsettling electronic hip-hop. Eerie and kinetic, the record opens with its titular track, a sultry trap cut, before “BBQ,” a glitched-out halftime banger. Artwork for Ivy Lab’s “Press Play” EP. Recommended Articles The th...

Iggy Azalea just gave her music career a send-off with her most experimental album yet. Last week, the “Fancy” rapper released her final album for the foreseeable future, aptly titled The End of an Era.  Despite the culmination of her music career, which yielded multiple chart-topping singles, the Australian hip-hop star didn’t play things safe on the way out. Azalea doubles down on house music and even branches into drum & bass on her new record. Elton John and Lady Gaga’s Next Collab Is “Extreme Hardcore Drum & Bass”

Two of the most decorated musicians in pop history walk into a bar—and make a drum & bass track?  According to a report from The Sun, Sir Elton John and Lady Gaga will soon release a  “hardcore drum & bass” remix of their 2020 song, “Sine From Above,” off the latter’s sixth studio album, Chromatica.  “It’s about as far away from ‘Rocket Man’ and ‘Candle in the Wind’ as you can get,” an anonymous source told The Sun. “(The) collaboration with Gaga took everyone by surprise but the remix will leave them speechless… It’s gone from a pop dance track to extreme hardcore drum & bass.” The original version of “Sine From Above” generated buzz with its bouncy elec...

HVDES Revives Evanescence’s “Bring Me To Life” With Angsty Drum & Bass Remix: Listen

90’s kids: grab some Capri Sun, dump it into your morning coffee, and get ready to time-travel back to 2003, when “Bring Me To Life” was soundtracking cry-ragers from NY to LA. Bass music producer HVDES has tapped into Evanescence’s generational rock anthem, flipping the gothic nu-metal tune into a wild drum & bass rendition. Tonal growls and neurofunk bass patches are at the heart of the remix, which uses frenetic drum programming to drive the arrangement home for a proper 2021 electronic makeover. The remix also comes paired with an Ergo Proxy anime audiovisual, which, well, brings the remix to life with its cyberpunk vibes.  Check out the clip below. Metrik and Grafix Return With Roaring Single “Overdrive” and “Parallel VIP”

After his seminal 2020 album Ex Machina was released, drum & bass icon Metrik didn’t slow down. His VIP edit of “Cadence” with Reija Lee made waves on the H25PITAL compilation earlier this year, and he’s now back with Grafix in tow for a heater of a double-single. The next joint effort from the stellar drum & bass producers comes in the form of “Overdrive,” a futuristic dancefloor stepper with some serious nu-metal influences, both in the lyrical melodies (courtesy of Metrik himself), and record-scratching sounds reminiscent of early Linkin Park cuts. Falling in line with the Ex Machina atmosphere, “Overdrive” paints an image of a dystopian cyberpunk world, as Metrik and Grafix serve pure energy through the powerful bass stabs and enc...

10 Years Ago, DJ Fresh’s “Louder” Became the First Dubstep Song to Reach #1

The explosion of UK dubstep dates back to the mid 2000s, when iconic artists such as Skream, Benga, Rusko, and Caspa began making waves in the underground music scene. However, a dubstep track reaching the heights of mainstream popularity was rare, even after DJ Fresh charted with his drum & bass classic “Gold Dust” in 2010. Shortly after, Fresh’s dubstep track “Louder,” featuring Sian Evans, made history by being the first dubstep song to reach the #1 spot on the UK singles charts.  “Louder” vocalist Sian Evans performs at Vienna’s Regenbogenparade in 2008. Rusko Returns With Roaring Nod to Classic Drum & Bass, “MAC 19”: Listen

Legendary bass music pioneer Rusko has returned with a new single on Elevate Records. Tracing back to the roots of the UK bass movement, the dubstep icon dials up the tempo for a roaring drum & bass single called “MAC 19.” Rusko’s latest retains all of the wubby splendor he’s so well known for, while trading in the dubstep sentimentality for the raw energy of the classic drum & bass anthems of auld. Kicking things off with a rather ravey introduction reminiscent of UK hardcore, Rusko employs a ragga vocal sample and snare drum buildup to ramp up the energy before the drop. In the main sections, a daunting hoover bass duels with the quintessential Rusko wobble bass as the drum breaks shuffle on.  In his nod to the drum & bass explosion of the 90s, Ru...

Colorado-born, Los Angeles-based producer and DJ KALCYFR is a big fan of the game—so much so that he decided to take on reworking one of its most memorable songs, “Those Who Fight.” Perfect for an intense gaming session, KALCYFR’s twist on “Those Who Fight” ramps the video game anthem up in a gripping drum & bass rendition. Building on the intensity of Tatakau Monotachi’s original song, the stellar synth work, crushing drums, and electro stylings call to mind Cloud and Sephiroth locked in battle as their ridiculously sized swords clash to the epic melodies. Distorted, growling basses do we...

QUIX Impresses With New Drum & Bass Single on Dim Mak

New Zealand’s QUIX has quickly become one of the most revered artists in bass music. His unique approach to the genre paired with his sheer technical skill makes it hard to imagine that taking on any style would be a challenge for the producer. But his latest release was just that, he says.  “I’ve never made a DnB song like this before, and I wanted to challenge myself to incorporate the mainstream style with my signature style,” QUIX shared in a statement about today’s release of “Make Up Your Mind,” with Nashville singer-songwriter Jaden Michaels.  “I actually started writing this beat last year during a Twitch stream,” he continued. “Funnily enough, Jaden had already sent me the topline months before. Essentially, I m...
