HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Matt Winkelmeyer / Getty Donald Glover‘s acting career may be his main priority these days (we miss Atlanta), but that doesn’t mean he’s completely given up on his music profession. During an interview at the Golden Globes this past Tuesday (Jan. 10), Glover thrilled his day-one fans when he said that his alter-ego, Childish Gambino, is not in fact retired and that he’s actually been working on some new music “for fun” right now, but will soon serve some of what he’s been cooking up in the lab. Now that his acclaimed FX dramedy Atlanta has come to a close, Donald Glover has a lot of time on his hands — enough time, in fact, that he just might resurrect his musical alter ego Childish Gambino. Speaking to E!’s Laverne Cox on the Golden Globes red carpet last night, the multi-hyphenate said that he’s been working in the recording studio and that Childish Gambino “will be back.” “I’m making music right now, I love it,” Glover said. “I’m actually working, I’m in the studio. I’ve been bringing people in, like secret people, working on little things. But I’ve just been making it for fun right now. But soon something will happen, I promise. Something will happen.” Cox made sure to clarify that Glover’s new music would, in fact, be released as Childish Gambino, the moniker he sa...
Billie Eilish kept the surprises coming during the third and final show of her mini-residency at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles on Friday. After welcoming Dave Grohl and Phoebe Bridgers the previous evening, Eilish brought out Donald Glover for a rare live appearance as Childish Gambino. The two teamed up to perform “Redbone.” Watch fan-captured footage below. Following the performance, Glover remained on stage to lead the crowd in wishing Eilish a happy birthday (the pop prodigy turns 21 years old on Sunday). Friday night’s gig at the Forum marked Eilish’s final concert of 2022. However, she’s already lined up several dates in 2023, including headlining slots at Lollapalooza’s Latin American festivals and Osheaga in Montreal. Donald Glover is finally fulfilling his Spider-Man dreams by starring in a new film about [checks notes] the Hypno-Hustler. Yes, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor/writer/director/musician has signed on to star in and producer a movie centered around the D-list Spidey villain. The latest addition to Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters, the project is to be penned by Myles Murphy, son of the great Eddie Murphy. For someone who had a long-public desire to play the Web-Slinger himself, settling for such an obscure character sure seems like a strange move. Created in 1978, Hypno-Hustler’s real name is Antoine Delsoin, the frontman of a disco band called Mercy Killers. With his hypnotic guitar, he can hypnotize his robbery victims for an easy crime. He also has knockout gas an...
Donald Glover is finally getting a Spider-Man movie. It’s just not quite what you think. Glover is attached to star and produce a feature set in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man universe of Marvel Comics characters, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Myles Murphy, the son of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, is on board to write the project, which has no title but is said to revolve on the Hypno-Hustler, one of the more obscure Spider-Man villains. Earlier this year, the exciting news that Community was coming back with a movie was somewhat dampened when it appeared that Troy Barnes (Donald Glover) wasn’t included in the returning cast. Now, however, Community co-creator Dan Harmon says that omission was simply a mistake, and that Glover will actually be in the movie after all. It seemed understandable that Glover wouldn’t return to Community, which originally ran from 2009 to 2015, since the multi-hyphenate has grown increasingly busy with Atlanta and his music career as Childish Gambino in the years since the sitcom’s end. But according to Harmon, who addressed the reboot at a recent Variety Business Managers Breakfast, “For lack of a better word, there was a ball fumbled… [Glover] is down to...
[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Atlanta, Season 4 Episode 5, “Work Ethic!”] Atlanta’s final season continues its march towards the end with “Work Ethic!,” in which Van (Zazie Beetz) finds herself as well as her daughter Lottie (Austin Elle Fisher) sucked into the world of a TV mega-producer. Van initially arrives at a studio lot as a day player on a sitcom, but after an outburst from Lottie attracts the attention of the seemingly omniscient Kirkwood Chocolate (who communicates with his underlings strictly through a PA system), Van finds herself fighting to locate her daughter in the chaos of Kirkwood’s many, many ongoing productions. In classic Atlanta fashion, Van’s quest to find Lottie grows increasingly surreal and violent, until she eventually is able to confront Ki...
