The Techno Six: New Documentary Spotlights Detroit’s Dance Music Pioneers

First, there were six. The term “techno” is often evocative of its European emblems, like Germany’s Berghain and Sweden’s Drumcode. So much so that techno music is widely considered to be one of the continent’s exports. But a new documentary seeks to firmly correct this history, tracing techno’s origins back to a cohort of six Black producers from Detroit: “the first cover boys of techno,” said Kristian Hill, a Detroit denizen and the director of God Said Give ‘Em Drum Machines, in an interview with EDM.com. He’s referring to Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter, Santonio Echols, Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, who were collectively featured on the cover of British music magazine Record Mirror in 1988. According to God Said Give ‘Em Drum Machin...

These Kids Are Still All Right

I am sitting at the bar at the Tam O’Shanter, a Scottish steakhouse in the Atwater Village neighborhood of northeast Los Angeles, jotting down some notes for this article. Basic research stuff: the Whos, the Whats, the Whens. I already know quite a lot about my subjects, having been a fan for nearly 30 years. If my teenage self knew that one day I would be interviewing his comedy heroes, then underwear would most likely need a change. I had to be prepared. There’s great pressure in not letting your former self down. A bartender takes my order. He possesses a thick Scottish brogue, made even more indecipherable due to his Bane-like carbon filtered face mask. The Tam O’Shanter, which has been around for 100 years, serves a fine certified Angus beef prime rib with all the Scottish trimmings. ...

Among the comics who sing Carlin’s praises include Stephen Colbert, Patton Oswalt, and Jon Stewart, who appear in the documentary’s trailer to spit off the legend’s seven dirty words with childlike glee. Elsewhere, Jerry Seinfeld puts Carlin’s influence simply: “I wanted to be just like him.” The documentary covers the comedian’s full life story, from his early, foul-mouthed success to his latter-day comeback and all the cocaine ...

One Nation Under a Stylus

Vinyl Nation, a new documentary from directors Kevin Smokler and Christopher Boone, is, as the title may suggest, as much a chronicle about a growing community than it is about the medium of vinyl records. To be clear, the history of vinyl pressing, from its early market dominance to its later decline due to the advent of the compact disc, to its glorious return over the past decade — nearly 42 million records were sold in 2021(outselling CDs for the first time since 1986!) — is thoroughly covered (occasionally bordering on repetitive) by the filmmakers. The focus, however, is more on the collectors. The film opens outside the Mills Record Company in Kansas City. It’s Record Store Day, an annual celebration of independent record stores across the country, and a long line of collectors, obs...

Safdie Brothers Producing Andy Kaufman Documentary

A documentary on the late, great Andy Kaufman is finally in the works. That film, in turn, was examined in the 2017 doc Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond, which mostly centered around Carrey’s method acting approach to bringing Kaufman to life. This currently untitled project, however, will mark the ...
