Nas and DJ Premier connected on a new single that fans on X, formerly Twitter, learned is the start of a new project.
On Tuesday night (May 9), Grand Marnier held a special night called the Greats Encounters with Grand Marnier in Queens, NY. What made the evening even more special, besides the plentiful spirits, foods and vibes, was a performance from the legendary DJ Premier and an accompanying jazz ensemble, the Badder Band. As for the “Great […] The post DJ Premier Heightens Great Encounters with Grand Marnier In Queens [Photos] appeared first on The Latest Hip-Hop News, Music and Media | Hip-Hop Wired.

Last year, DJ Premier cobbled together a bunch of unreleased material that comprised a Gang Starr album titled One of the Best Yet. Today, there’s an instrumental version of that album that’s out, and on it is the song “Glowing Mic,” which features a previously unreleased verse from the late Guru. “There are two versions of a song called ‘Mr. Gang Starr,’ one version was released right after Guru passed away. The version I had stored away has totally different and unreleased lyrics,” DJ Premier told Rolling Stone. “As I was constructing the track, I found a scratch from Torae ‘I Destroy The Mic For My Glow’ and it was an instant decision on what to name the track (‘Glowing Mic’).” Listen to the song below. One of the most important lessons an artist can learn when the world is shut down is how to create a new one. That’s never been a problem for Torii Wolf. Prior to the pandemic, Wolf’s stylistic contortions as a singer-songwriter revolved around blending, burning and rebuilding genres. The Long Island native’s uniquely powerful, rage-filled rasp was the catalyst for Wolf’s breakout collaboration with legendary producer DJ Premier on their moody, trip-hop debut “Flow Riiot” in 2017. It was a launchpad that most new artists dream of, culminating in years of touring the world with ‘Preem while breaking barriers as a non-binary, LGBTQ artist. “It was a moment where I realized that massive shows are not as frightening to me,” Wolf tells SPIN of the three years they spent on the road, inclu...
Public Enemy was joined by an all-star group of musicians to open up the BET Awards with their 1989 classic “Fight the Power.” Nas, Rapsody, Black Thought, YG, ?uestlove, JAHI, DJ Lord, Professor Griff and S1Ws all performed on the PE classic, which was recorded (of course) remotely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Some contributed new verses to the 2020 version of the song. The performance comes a week after Public Enemy released their new single, “State of the Union (STFU),” which was produced by DJ Premier. We spoke with Chuck D. following the release of the single, where he told us about its origins in more detail. “This was an idea that was always floating in my head,” he said. “Every time I used to see the State of the Union with a hashmark in front of it over the last four y...

Run the Jewels don’t make a reviewer’s job easy because everything that’s great about them is the stuff we’re supposed to ignore to get to the bottom of the hype. They began as the best kind of “supergroup”: An unlikely pairing of beloved talents who still had plenty of room to peak higher. El-P’s fantastic Fantastic Damage and his countless innovative productions for his own previous, self-built Def Jux universe (Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein, Mr. Lif’s I Phantom) were unmistakably the most futuristic squelches in dusty-crate-obsessed indie-rap. Jaime Meline set the stage for dystopian soundscapes in hip-hop more than a decade before Death Grips, Yeezus, or the “mutant” scene that’s spawned Black Dresses and Deli Girls. Then you’ve got Michael Render, d/b/a Killer Mike, a firebrand of an MC...
