Famed record label and distributor EMPIRE has acquired the underground house music imprint Dirtybird. The announcement of the acquisition was made at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE). The deal reportedly marks the first foray into the electronic music scene for EMPIRE, who predominantly works with artists from the worlds of hip-hop and R&B, like Grammy Award-winning artists Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak. EMPIRE’s acquisition effectively bridges two Bay Area music powerhouses. “Growing up in San Francisco and the Bay Area at large, dance music has always been a huge part of our music scene,” said EMPIRE CEO and founder Ghazi in a statement. “EMPIRE at its core is a company that is for the culture. For the uninitiated, it can be difficult to describe a weekend at Dirtybird Campout. Ivan Meneses At its core, Campout is the antithesis of the cliché festival formula. The three-day camping experience differentiates itself from the rest thanks to its ability to forgo all the rules, allowing artists and fans alike to relinquish their egos in the name of fun. Dirtybird cofounder Mz Worthy has returned this summer with a new house anthem, “Feel It.” Corresponding with her first Pride Month performance in Los Angeles, the track dropped on June 3rd via Club Sweat. “Feel It” is a four-on-the-floor filler, overlaid with an infectious, singalong refrain that erupts into a dark and dirty drop. Twinkling arpeggios thrum above a shimmering synth soundscape before the arrangement’s punchy snares fire it off it into each of its two breaks. “I hope while you’re listening you can just let go of it all and be your true self,” Mz Worthy said in a press release. Over the course of the weekend campers delighted in a star-studded lineup, which was unexpectedly complemented by a bevy of some of the most nostalgic games ever played at summer camp. Eardrums were pleasantly walloped by techno and house music icons like Damian Lazarus, Carl Craig, Boyz Noise, and Claude VonStroke, as well as hip-hop luminaries like Too $hort, Digable Planets, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Games took the event to a whole new level too. There were potato sack races and tug...
