Rock Hall of Fame 2022: Carly Simon, Eminem, Dolly Parton, Beck Lead Nominees

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has unveiled its contenders for the Class of 2022. The ballot features seven first-time nominees including Carly Simon, Eminem, Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Beck, Lionel Richie, and A Tribe Called Quest, as well as Kate Bush, Devo, Judas Priest, MC5, New York Dolls, Rage Against The Machine, Pat Benatar, Fela Kuti, Eurythmics, and Dionne Warwick. Artists eligible for this year’s ballot had to have released their first single or album in 1996 or earlier. Eminem is the only artist on this year’s ballot nominated in his first year eligible (his debut album, Infinite, was released in 1996.) “This year’s ballot recognizes a diverse group of incredible artists, each who has had a profound impact on the sound of youth culture,” said John Sykes, chairman of the Rock ...

The 40 Greatest Music Video Artists

Music videos are the perfect bastard child of art and commerce, even more than pop music itself. A promotional visual accompaniment to a popular song doesn’t need a coherent narrative (although on rare occasions, they do). It just needs to suit the song, sell the record, and possibly make the artist look cool. But since the launch of MTV 40 years ago this week, a select few recording artists have helped raise music videos to an art form — sometimes by accident, and sometimes by carefully curating the work of brilliant directors like Mark Romanek, Hype Williams, and Spike Jonze. Here are 40 artists from the last four decades that helped video kill the radio star. 40. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Flexes the PlayStation 5’s Muscle to a Score By Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh

With the PlayStation 5 still only slightly easier to obtain than invitations to the Roc Nation Brunch, it’s not a huge surprise that most games releasing on the console these days are also coming to the PS4 as well. But Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, isn’t one of those titles — nor could it ever be. Not unlike April’s Returnal, the latest title published by Sony takes full advantage of the new hardware’s exclusive features, like the lightning-fast SSD and ridiculous haptic feedback on the DualSense controllers. But while Housemarque was venturing into some completely uncharted territory with their new IP, this week’s major release sees Insomniac Games (Spyro, Spider-Man, Resistance) return to the series that put them on the map. As the 16th Ratchet & Clank title, Rift Apart builds up...

Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh Spent 18 Days in a Hospital, Nearly Died From COVID-19

If it isn’t obvious already, contracting COVID-19 can be scary. For Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, it was literally a life or death situation. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Mothersbaugh details a terrifying bout with the virus. He told the paper that he spent 18 days in Cedars-Sinai hospital in June and was on a ventilator. Mothersbaugh also said that he experienced some serious hallucinations. “There’s a bookstore I love where I get stationery supplies, and in my mind I had been there,” he told the Times. “I was convinced for about two weeks that I had been hit by a brick by somebody in Little Tokyo.” He added about hallucinating: “I had this whole elaborate story of how these kids sold me to an ambulance company that then got some sort of a payment for delivering COVID patien...

Trent Reznor, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, Pharrell, Sheila E, RZA Nominated for 2020 Emmys

This morning, though it still feels weird to say it, the 2020 Emmy nominees were announced. For our purposes, there were quite a few familiar names on that list. Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were nominated for Outstanding Music Composition For a Limited Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the HBO series The Watchmen. Also recognized in the Original Music and Lyrics category are the Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for The Black Godfather, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith for This Is Us, and Ingrid Michaelson for Little Fires Everywhere. The Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) category has some heavy comp...

30 Great Albums From 1990 That Deserve Their Own 30th Anniversary Pieces

Every decade takes a couple of years to feel like itself, but the 1990s, in particular, had a soft launch. While 1991 would bring a bumper crop of era-defining albums from the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, U2, and Red Hot Chili Peppers that would set the tone for alternative rock for the rest of the decade, the music of 1990 often feels like an outgrowth of the previous decades. Even the year’s biggest rock debut that was positioned as a contrast from hair metal was the decidedly retro Black Crowes.  Billboard’s Modern Rock chart, which had just been launched in late 1988, was still dominated by established British bands like The Psychedelic Furs and Gene Loves Jezebel. Depeche Mode and Sinead O’Connor became the year’s unlikely crossover stars. Observe the chart in the last week of&nb...

Devo Whip COVID-19 Good by Selling Energy Dome Face Shields

Sensing an opportunity to protect the world from de-evolution, Devo is selling their trademark energy dome hats with a twist: A plastic face shield attached for COVID-19 protection. It’s a good thing. “The dome is solid and the attached shield is clear, but it’s what you can’t see that gets you!” a statement on the band’s website read. “Stay safe from invisible particles and unwanted bodily fluids in this coordinated, disease-blocking, Devo Energy Dome PPE kit headgear. The shield attaches to your Energy Dome via Velcro. It’s simple and it’s safe!” “As you know the Coronavirus pandemic squashed any DEVO 2020 concert plans for the time being. We shall see what happens. In the meantime we know that as the lockdown is eased human interactions at concerts, sporting events, etc. mean that masks...
