DENVER — Tennyson’s Tap was the kind of music club where, on packed nights, the lone frazzled employee serving drinks, running sound and manning the door might ask one of the bands to help out and collect the $5 cover charge. I know because I sang in one of those bands, Smaldone Faces, and our bassist Luke and I pretty much let everyone in for free. The Tap, at 4335 W. 38th St. in Denver, specialized in whiskey and scruffy musicians of every conceivable genre — my two bands that played there did country, punk and metal covers, and we opened for screamo indie-rockers, jazzy improvisationalists and dreadlocked funk-and-reggae combos. The bar smelled like cigarettes and beer, and had a capacity of about 90, but when we drew our crowds of 20 or 30 people, it roared like Springsteen at the Roxy...
Different city, same Meow Wolf. Teeming rain in Denver couldn’t stop the brand’s flagship music festival, Vortex, from making a statement in 2022. Moving the fest from New Mexico to the Mile High City for the first time, Meow Wolf proved their prestige is immutable. Vortex made a splash over the weekend at The Junkyard, a new open-air venue promising immersive live music experiences in Denver. Attendees of the event found themselves in an adult playground where—at any turn—Alice in Wonderland syndrome could’ve set in. Revered for conceptualizing experiential activations that distort reality, Meow Wolf enthralled and titillated at The Junkyard. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more vibrant community. Attendees of Meow Wolf’s Vortex festival pose f...

ILLENIUM is bringing the biggest show in his career to Denver in 2023. Last year, the Grammy-nominated producer took the stage at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas for the massive outing, “Trilogy.” Now, with two years to plan his return, he’s taking things to the next level with its sophomore edition in Colorado. Performing for four hours straight, ILLENIUM threw down three sets representing each of his first three albums, Ashes, Awake and Ascend. He then followed with a bonus preview set consisting of songs from his then-unreleased album, Fallen Embers. Considering the fact that he now has four albums under his belt, it’s not yet clear how he will handle the incorporation of Fallen Embers now that it’s been released. Like last year’s event at th...

It’s a new year, and the same old story for Denver’s Beta Nightclub. Once again, the beloved venue’s future is left hanging in the balance. Though the club has historically been instrumental in fostering Denver’s electronic music community, the downtown establishment has sustained a long series of closures, reopenings, and even a rebrand as Beta 2.0 in late 2019. Despite its various woes, the club persisted, though a new directive from the City of Denver has once again forced operations to grind to a halt—perhaps permanently. According to reporting by the Denver Post, Beta Nightclub began to fall under scrutiny upon law enforcement’s investigation of increasingly prevalent reports of violence happening in the area. Police testimony from DPD Officer...

While that lineup in and of itself is enough to get even the most seasoned bass music veteran excited, Space Laces will be taking things to the next level with his first-ever “Vaultage” set. Telling fans to expect the unexpected, he took to Twitter to share a short trailer teasing what’s to come. Not much is known about the performance at this time, but fans should expect a memorable set from one of the most gifted sound designers in the electronic music scene. As...
