Real Madrid man highlights why he gets stick, dry your eyes Savage

The European Championships have reached the knockout stage, and the first two games on Saturday delivered plenty of entertainment. Denmark’s demolition job on Wales was fantastic viewing, particularly if you enjoy listening to Robbie Savage make a fool of himself on national television. Italy were pushed hard by Austria in their last-16 tie, but Roberto Mancini’s team eventually got over the line after extra time. Dry your eyes Savage Having suffered Robbie Savage’s biased commentary on the BBC as Wales beat Turkey in the group stage, it was great to listen to his efforts as his glory boys were humiliated by Denmark. With the Danes leading 3-0, there was a wondrous two or three minute period where the normally motor-mouthed Welshman was completely silent. Robbie Savage saying “Wales look t...

A selection of Chelsea fans hailed the performance of Andreas Christensen during Denmark’s stunning 4-0 win over Wales at Euro 2020. The Danes progressed to the last eight of the competition with a sublime showing in Amsterdam where Christensen excelled from his midfield role. The Blues star initially started on the right side of a back three for Denmark, but was shifted to midfield after a dominating 15 minutes for Wales. The 25-year-old produced a solid display from the centre of the park, and he did a brilliant job of man-marking and nullifying the threat of Aaron Ramsey. He dropped back into defence after the hour mark. Some Blues fans were delighted with his display and believe he could play a similar role at club level. They twice came close to opening the scoring when Gareth Bale struck wide from distance. But Denmark managed to take control of the game and got themselves ahead in the 27th minute. Kasper Dolberg, who was standing in for the injured Yussuf Poulsen, curled one into the far corner from the edge of the box after being fed by Mikkel Damsgaard. Things went from bad to worse for Robert Page’s men when right-back Connor Roberts picked up a groin injury. He was substituted off and replaced by Liverpool’s Neco Williams. Denmark continued to dominate the first half and almost got themselves a second just before the ...

Former Tottenham player delivers nonsense Euro verdict, FA jump the gun

Goodbye group stage, hello knockout phase. Yes folks, we’re down to the last 16 in the European Championships and as Jim Ross would say ‘business is about to pick up’. We’ve reached the stage of the tournament where a mistake can kill someone’s career, or one goal could lead to a player bagging a big-money move they don’t deserve. Let’s look at some of the key talking points from the last 24 hours and establish which team we want to crash out of the competition. Denmark on a mission The football world froze two weeks ago as Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s opening game against Finland at the European Championships. Thankfully, the medical experts miraculously worked their magic, and Eriksen has lived to fight another day. What a man! ‘He’s become a friend’ – how Kasper Hjulmand...

“We are always the underdogs” – Gareth Bale is confident of a “big performance”

Wales captain Gareth Bale is unfazed by his team’s underdog status ahead of their Euro 2020 last-16 clash against Denmark on Saturday. Wales finished runners-up to Italy in Group A with a mixed return from their three group stage fixtures (W1, D1, L1) to reach the European Championships knockout phase for the second tournament running. The Dragons reached the semi-finals at Euro 2016, going down 2-0 to eventual winners Portugal as they hope to emulate similar success this summer. Rob Page’s team will have to overcome Denmark, who became the first nation in Euro history to make it out of the group stage after losing their opening two games of the tournament. Danish Dynamite lost their headline performer Christian Eriksen for the rest of the competition after the Inter Milan playmaker collap...

1 from Portugal, 1 from France, 2 from Netherlands – Euro 2020 Best XI of Round 3

The group stage has come to an end, and now we have to endure two whole days without Euro 2020 action. How will we cope? At least the groups ended on a cracker, with several exceptional performances from the final round of fixtures. Here is our best XI from round three of Euro 2020. Lukas Hradecky (GK) – It feels a bit bizarre to include someone who scored an own goal, but here we are. Hradecky kept Finland in the game for as long as possible, producing several excellent stops to keep Belgium out before being cruelly robbed of his clean sheet. Nelson Semedo (RB) – The selection of right-backs from the latest round of fixtures was somewhat slim, but Nelson Semedo gets in for a solid performance. He got a lot of criticism for his performance against Germany, and many feared that it...

Man City star makes huge impact in comeback victory – Denmark 1-2 Belgium Player Ratings

Belgium came from behind to defeat Denmark in a thrilling Group B match at Euro 2020 on Thursday. It was the perfect start by Denmark, who took the lead after just two minutes. Both sides had chances within the next five minutes to add to the scoresheet. Belgium came close when Youri Tielemans’ cross was glanced towards goal by Dries Mertens, but straight at Kasper Schmeichel. Meanwhile, Denmark had three chances in quick succession to double their advantage. Joakim Maehle almost forced his way through but was smothered by Thibaut Courtois, and Martin Braithwaite also came close. Maehle was infl...

Danish players criticise decision to resume game after Christian Eriksen collapse

Denmark’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and striker Martin Braithwaite on Monday lamented that they had to choose whether to restart the Denmark-Finland Euro 2020 match while they were reeling from Christian Eriksen’s mid-game collapse. “We were put in a position, that I personally feel that we shouldn’t have been put in,” Schmeichel told Danish media at a press event in Helsingor north of Copenhagen. “We had two options,” Schmeichel explained. “Either come back the day after (Sunday) at noon or continue the game.” The Leicester City goalkeeper said he wished someone more senior would’ve said “that it wasn’t the time to take that decision, and that we should maybe wait until the day after to decide”. “What has happened has happened, and hopefully they’ll learn from this,” Schmeichel said, a...
