Spin’s “Kat Calls” is live now with a special interview and Q&A session featuring two of dance music’s biggest contributors, Carl Cox and deadmau5. Right now, “Kat Calls” host Kat Bein has the two dance music tastemakers on the line for a virtual discussion on music, the industry at large, and more. It’s a landmark episode for the burgeoning dance music-focused talk show, which began in April of this year. Carl Cox and deadmau5’s worlds recently collided when Cox was approached with an opportunity to remix deadmau5 and The Neptunes‘ collaboration “Pomegranate.” The tenured producer outfitted the twangy nu-disco original with an instrument stack fit for the club, dialing up the tempo to 128 BPM and add...

Earlier in the month of August, deadmau5 announced that he was playing an intimate drive-in rave in Toronto. The popularity of drive-in shows during the COVID-19 epoch has grown tremendously and they are now a robust sub-sector of the live music industry, which was decimated by the impact of the virus. Following the announcement, the Grammy Award-nominated electronic music producer flung his diehard fanbase headfirst into a fever pitch. “hey Toronto, the boss has been chatting with the city mayor… and we’re happy to let you know we’ve got a small drive-in show booked in for Friday, August 14th!” he wrote at the time. Drive-in raves do, of course, come with many caveats in the name of public safety, so deadmau5’s City View Drive-In was under a very public microscope a...

deadmau5 is throwing his hat into the drive-in rave craze, which has continued to pick up steam in the wake of the pandemic’s decimation of the live music industry. The Grammy Award-nominated electronic music producer took to Instagram today to announce a forthcoming drive-in concert in Toronto on August 14th, 2020. “hey Toronto, the boss has been chatting with the city mayor… and we’re happy to let you know we’ve got a small drive-in show booked in for Friday, August 14th!” deadmau5 wrote. Drive-in shows have been a topic of consternation in the aftermath of “Safe & Sound,” a concert in the Hamptons headlined by The Chainsmokers that reportedly devolved into a show devoid of social distancing. They have also proved to be a headache for promoters and ...
Iconic DJ and electronic music producer deadmau5 has unveiled OSC/PILOT, a control surface application that has been a vital component of his performance arsenal. Originally developed as a both a control surface unit for his shows and a performance tool for digital artists and musicians, deadmau5 has now made the tool available to the public. Considering the increasingly omnipresent overlap in audio and visual contrived by the livestreaming era in light of COVID-19, OSC/PILOT represents a simple way to bridge the gap in a desktop application. Artists are also able to adapt the control surface to their programs and DAWs, including Ableton Live, TouchDesigner, and Bitwig, among others, providing a streamlined and fully customizable UI. A press release issued to announce the application ...
COVID-19 is like a disposable camera—it has no place in modern society, but it conjures nostalgic memories of old. iPhones are to disposable cameras what COVID-19 is to live music. The only difference, however, is that live music will eventually return. Until that happens, though, we can only look at the past through rose colored glasses and hope the hues don’t fade. To that end, a number of electronic music artists and labels have taken to social media in recent weeks to share old videos of intoxicating concert moments that are crystallized in time as mementos of a once-vibrant EDM zeitgest. However, these little vignettes should be emblematic not of a culture lost, but a culture with a stormproof foundation ready to be reborn. Here are 10 glorious pre-pandemic EDM concert moments f...
A recently released biography may have revealed Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex‘s affinity for dance music. Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand discovered that after his first date with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex—then Meghan Markle—he followed her on Instagram using a secret account. Interestingly enough, his username was inspired by iconic Canadian EDM producer deadmau5. In Finding Freedom, Scobie and Durand write that the couple dated in secret, but after their first encounter, she followed a user by the name of “SpikeyMau5.” The page was a private account that donned a profile picture of deadmau5’s iconic mau5head. They then go on to explain why Prince Harry chose that name and how it was inspired by one of his favorite artists and a...

deadmau5 took to Instagram recently to share a teaser of a forthcoming VR project. The electronic music icon was mum on the details, however, writing nothing but an arcane caption along with the video that reads, “A breed of goat.” The teaser does divulge that the project was produced in collaboration with Epic Games‘ gameframe Unreal Engine as well as Geodesic Games and Upsurge Studios. The teaser closes in typically cryptic deadmau5 style with a nebulous message that says “Codename #Oberhasli.” An Oberhasli is a breed of dairy goat, which explain’s deadmau5’s caption but does nothing to demystify it in terms of the forthcoming project. You can watch the teaser below. FOLLOW DEADMAU5: Facebook: facebook.com/deadmau5Twitter: twitter...

To close out the “Pomegranate” chapter of deadmau5’s forthcoming LP, we’ve received the third and final remix by none other than the three-deck wizard himself, Carl Cox. Cox delivers over six minutes of heart-thumping tech house flavors expertly crafted to support Pharrell’s iconic vocal stylings. He brings the track straight to the darkest of danc...
