Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith Talks Growing Up in Malibu to Meeting Mandy Moore on ‘Lipps Service’

This week on SPIN Presents Lipps Service, host Scott Lipps spoke with Taylor Goldsmith, the singer of indie rock band Dawes, ahead of the band’s eighth studio album, Misadventures Of Doomscroller. In a wide-ranging conversation, Goldsmith spoke about growing up as a non-surfer at Malibu High, being the square listening to Dave Brubeck and Steely Dan. There, Goldsmith met producer Blake Mills and formed the post-punk band, Simon Dawes, which gradually morphed into the band, Dawes. Goldsmith also spoke about touring at 37, idolizing Bob Dylan, and how he met his future wife, Mandy Moore, on Instagram. On the last episode, Lipps spoke with legendary Journey co-founder and guitarist Neal Schon. Schon went deep on Journey’s early days, as well as his own. The conversation begins with Schon reco...

36 Musicians Predict the 2021-22 NBA Season

If it feels like the previous NBA season just ended, well, it sort of did. The Milwaukee Bucks triumphed over the Phoenix Suns, capturing the franchise’s second title in mid-July, and here we are in mid-October with the league ready to tipoff again. Once again, we polled music’s biggest NBA fans to give their takes on how the upcoming season is going to unfold. Unlike last season (more like 2019), we asked for some general thoughts, musing and predictions. As you’ll see in a moment, there are a lot of Lakers and Sixers fans (and they seem pretty optimistic about their team’s chances this season). Here’s what our musician panel had to say about the 2021-22 NBA season. Mark LaneganLos Angeles Clippers They finally made it to the Western Conference finals, which I never thought would hap...

27 Musicians Predict the 2020-21 NBA Season

If it feels like the most-recent NBA season just ended, well, it did. The strangeness of 2020 engulfed the association, but it led to one of the more innovative ideas of the COVID-era: the bubble. (Mostly) quarantined, teams competed with nary a hitch at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando. The season ended in the fall instead of its customary June, but nevertheless, the NBA is back on Dec. 22. As usual, we enlisted our expert musician panel to preview what’s shaping up to be yet another unpredictable NBA season. I always go into the season optimistic and the same when they hit...

Trent Reznor, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, Pharrell, Sheila E, RZA Nominated for 2020 Emmys

This morning, though it still feels weird to say it, the 2020 Emmy nominees were announced. For our purposes, there were quite a few familiar names on that list. Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were nominated for Outstanding Music Composition For a Limited Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the HBO series The Watchmen. Also recognized in the Original Music and Lyrics category are the Neptunes’ Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for The Black Godfather, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith for This Is Us, and Ingrid Michaelson for Little Fires Everywhere. The Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) category has some heavy comp...

Dawes Prep New LP, Share Playful Green Screen Video for New Song

Dawes will release their seventh studio album, Good Luck With Whatever, on Oct. 2 via Rounder Records. They previewed the LP with lead single “Who Do You Think You’re Talking To?,” a reliably steady rocker built on a new wave-y bass pulse, chiming piano, and cleanly arranged vocal harmonies. “Who do you think you’re talking to? / Is it the man that was here before me?” frontman Taylor Goldsmith sings on the track. “The one that wrecked your heart and walked? / ‘Cause if it is then I’ll let you talk / It’s clear that’s something you’re still working through / But who, who do you think you’re talking to?” They paired the tune with a playful video that makes creative use of green screen, showing the singer as he drives down the highway, pilots a plane into the clouds, launches into space, and...
