The pop singer posted her previously unreleased rendition of the Thin White Duke’s 1970 track “All the Madmen,” informing followers that this was a “ruff lost tape recording/demo” that she had “just found.” “HBD David Bowie,” she wrote in the caption. “I love you.” Listen to Ferreira’s hazy cover of “All the Madmen” below. The Starman’s estate also celebrated his birthday by unveiling two previously unreleased covers: Bowie’s version of John Lennon’s 1970 classic “Mother” and  Bob Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven.” The songs were released as l...

David Bowie’s Birthday Celebrated With His Covers of John Lennon and Bob Dylan Songs

David Bowie’s birthday today would have been the Starman’s 74th, and to celebrate, two previously unreleased covers are being shared — Bowie’s version of John Lennon’s 1970 classic “Mother” along with  Bob Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven.” The tunes come as limited-edition singles and are on streaming platforms now. Duran Duran Share Cover of David Bowie’s ‘Five Years’

Duran Duran are starting the year off with a commemoration for David Bowie, who would have turned 74 today. They’re paying tribute to the late icon with a cover of “Five Years,” a deep-cut from the classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, ahead of their performance on A Bowie Celebration: Just For One Day tomorrow at 6 pm EST. A portion of the ticket proceeds go to one of Bowie’s favorite organizations, Save the Children. “My life as a teenager was all about David Bowie,” frontman Simon Le Bon said in a statement. “He is the reason why I started writing songs. Part of me still can’t believe in his death five years ago, but maybe that’s because there’s a part of me where he’s still alive and always will be. When we got the Ziggy Stardust LP and put the needle i...

David Bowie Covers John Lennon and Bob Dylan on New Vinyl Single

To celebrate what would have been David Bowie’s 74th birthday, on Jan. 8. 2020 two previously unreleased covers — John Lennon’s “Mother” and Bob Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” — will be released as a limited-edition seven-inch single. Bowie’s version of “Mother” was produced by Tony Visconti in 1998 for a Lennon tribute that never came to fruition. It was originally recorded by the Beatle for his 1970 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album. Dylan’s “Tryin’ to Get to Heaven” was recorded by Bowie in February 1998 during the mixing sessions for the live album LiveAndWell.com. Dylan’s original was released on his multiple Grammy-winning 1997 album Time Out Of Mind. Guitarist Reeves Gabrels, who played with Bowie from 1987 to 1999 and has been a member of the Cure since...

Stardust Stars Marc Maron and Johnny Flynn on Bowie Film, the Music That Made Them

Let’s get this out of the way first: None of David Bowie’s songs appear in Stardust. This might seem like a cinematic Achilles’ heel, particularly given the movie’s time frame: just before the birth of Bowie’s most famous alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. However, not resorting to the jukebox musical techniques, or forcing actors to sing lesser-than covers, might be the film’s greatest strength.  It’s set during an ill-fated tour behind The Man Who Sold the World, where, thanks to a work visa, Bowie (played by a swaggering Johnny Flynn) is allowed to do everything but perform. Instead, the iconic singer, still more of a star on paper than in reality, is reduced to listening: Hunching over a radio in a Midwest hotel room, becoming a deer in headlights at a Velvet Underground show, clutching a...

It arrives via digital download and streaming services, with a physical seven-inch single coming on Feb. 19. On the flip side of the single will be Morrissey’s take on The Jam’s “That’s Entertainment,” which is not, however, the same version of the song that Morrissey put out in 1993. Morrissey’s official website says that “Cosmic Dancer” will have an “upgraded and edited video made in Los Angeles by Tim Broad.” That will also drop on Nov. 13. The front and back photographs of David Bowie and Morrissey on the sleeve were taken in New York City by Linder Sterling. The ori...
