New Music Friday is intense. Hundreds of songs drop from artists around the world, and you’re supposed to somehow find the best ones. It’s fun work, but it’s time-consuming — so we at Billboard Dance want to give you a hand. Each week, we sift through the streams and dig in the digital crates to present the absolute must-hears from the wide breadth of jams. Dance music is all about the community, and in that spirit, this week is delivering a litany of heavyweight collabs. There’s Louisahhh getting a heavy-ass edit from Imogen, Oliver Heldens big upping his excellent new Heldeep signee Aspen King and the unusually long list of group efforts below. Grab a friend, and let’s dig in. Armand van Helden & Chris Lake Feat. Arthur Baker & Victor Simonelli...
Taking inspiration from influences ranging from anime to Bonobo to Blade Runner to Neil deGrasse Tyson, it makes sense that Lastlings’ debut album, First Contact, is smart, deep, futuristic and a little bit celestial. Written between the brother and sister duo’s home on the Gold Coast of Australia and the Japanese fishing village where their grandparents reside, the album’s dozen tracks have a sophisticated allure, maintaining their delicacy while often growing thick with layers of synth and percussion. It’s altogether live electronic music ripe for sweaty dancefloors and packed tents, many of which the duo filled during sets at big deal festivals — including Coachella and Splendour In the Grass. Named one of Billboard Dance’s artists to watch last Novem...
James Blake is the sort of artist who you know and love, or you’re yet to discover. On Thursday night (Nov. 19), the electronic artist and producer changed tac for a haunting cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” on The Tonight Show. Performing at a grand piano with no pyrotechnics, smoke machines or digital wizardry, Blake stripped it right back to the core. It was a moment that should thrust Blake into new audiences, win him more friends. Brit Blake first came to recognition in the 2010s with a string of EPs, and his critically-launched, self-titled 2011 album. Its followup, 2013’s Overgrown, won the coveted Mercury Music Prize and a Grammy for best new artist. {“nid”:”9465012″,”type”:”post”,”titleR...

David Guetta and Sia rise to No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart (dated Nov. 14) with “Let’s Love.” Guetta adds his ninth leader, the second-most since the chart’s August 2003 inaugural; only Calvin Harris and Rihanna have more, with 12 each. “Love” is Sia’s first Dance/Mix Show Airplay No. 1 among 15 charted titles, spanning back to “Clap Your Hands” (No. 23, 2010). She’d previously charted as high as No. 2 in 2012 as featured on Guetta’s “Titanium.” {“account_id”:”1125911414″,”id”:””,”title”:””,”featured_media”:””} Airplay leaders on “Love” include core-dance affiliates KMVQ-HD2 San Fr...
Grimes is used to putting herself into unusual situations. But none of her far-out artistic excursions have included having her hands bound while a leather masked gimp tickles her with a feather, shocks her feet and being locked in place while Kraft Punk pours a bucket of Velveeta on her head. Just a day’s work on the new season of The Eric Andre Show. The envelope-pushing comedian known for his gross-out bits and intense physical comedy goes all in on Grimes in a recently posted bit from the fifth season of his bananas Adult Swim series during a segment called “Grimes & Punishment.” The new 10-episode season includes appearances from Blake Griffin, A$AP Ferg, Adam Rippon, Tia Carrere, Robin Givens, Jai Rodriguez, Luis Guzman and others instantly regretting their deci...

MG: I think that we have always had a very electronic foundation, but we embraced a lot of rock traditions a long time ago. We used to be electronic purists, but that changed at some point during the ‘80s when we started using guitars and other instruments, so I have no problem with being called rock. Despite deals with majors, Depeche Mode has maintained a long-standing loyalty to Mute Records. How essential was Mute to the success of early Depeche Mode? MG: I think we were very lucky to bump into Daniel very early on in our career and to get to work with him. He was like a father figure to us, really. Even though he wasn’t that old, he had a lot more experience than us. He’s really helped to guide our career from day one and is still part of the story today. He’s still involved in all as...
The very large truck was later spotted by a helicopter careening through Malibu, where police attempted to stop it with a pit maneuver and spike strip. But no dice! The thief then drove back to the Valley, where he ran several stoplights before running into a light pole while exiting a Taco Bell parking lot. The driver eventually surrendered and was peacefully arrested. “The truck’s involved in a live pursuit on KCAL 9,” Shalizi said when sharing video of the chase to his Instagram story. “This is crazy.” Indeed, it’s “OK Not to Be OK” when material possessions “Come & Go,” but Shalizi will very likely be “Happier” when his truck is replaced. Both music and photography are natural extensions of E-Clyps’ longstanding position as an advocate for racial equality within and beyond the dance music community. Having produced music for the greater part of 10 years — and with releases on venerated labels including Ultra, Nervous, Defected and more — E-Clyps has still struggled to achieve many of the professional milestones that seemingly come easily to white producers. He believes systemic racism within the overwhelmingly white dance music industry, and his own outspokenness about this issue, has prevented him from rising through the ranks, or even from even gaining representation. The issues he’s experienced throughout his career, he notes, are no different from those long experienced by Black producers, despit...
For all of us who saw Coyote Ugly in the theater (twice), a standout was not just the film’s aspirational lifestyle of boozy fun, but the pop-centric soundtrack. Featuring a quartet of LeAnn Rimes bangers — “Can’t Fight the Moonlight,” “Please Remember,” “The Right Kind of Wrong” and “But I Do Love You” (all of which were written by Dianne Warren), the music gave the ladies of the namesake canteen something to dance to when they took to the top of the bar, with Rimes herself strutting alongside them in the film’s climactic scene. Now, Grammy-winning producer Dave Audé has gifted us a Coyote Ugly megamix featuring all four of Rimes’ hits mashed up into a dancefloor-worthy extravaganza of beats and lyrics you still...
