Though the label has quietly released music since 2018 from artists in and around the group’s North Carolina community, Psychic Hotline now has a distribution partner in Secretly Distribution, part of the Secretly Group, and a vision for expansion that involves artist-centric deals. “We’ve always been really lucky to have a management that has negotiated really aggressive, very artist-centric deals for us, which I think is one of the reasons why our experience with labels has been relatively less painful,” Meath says. Those artist-friendly negotiations involved securing short-term deals with labels, which is why, for example, the band already fully owns its 2014 self-titled debut album. Meath and Sanborn plan on offering similar short-term, flexible deals to artists who sign with them. “We...

“We had never written songs that way before,” he continues. “There was a piano in the house we had rented; we sat at the piano. I mean, this is songwriting 101 stuff, but because we’re both tinkerers and producers and electronics are so important to what we do, we hadn’t tried that as an entry point into our music before.” Spending an extended period of time together for the first time since the world tour behind Psychic wrapped in 2014, Jaar and Harrington spent a lot of time just talking, cooking and generally hanging out. “I remember most vividly,” Jaar recalls via email, “when we decided to go out into the yard just with a guitar and my phone to record voice notes. I remember Dave would always sit in the shade and I would sit in the s...
Discord – The Movie, which also included a cameo from J Balvin, is part of Discord’s recent “Imagine a Place” campaign reframing the once gamer-focused platform as a place where people with all sorts of interests can congregate — including artists and their fans. After a press preview of the film — and between burbling interruptions from her one-year-old baby — Grimes took a moment to chat about her strategy as an artist on Discord, her relationship with social media, how her upcoming “space opera” album differs from her last and her future plans in television and podcasting. Watch the short film below, and scroll on to hear from Grimes herself. How did you first become familiar with Discord? I actually learned about Discord becaus...
Almost three years after the release of their Grammy-nominated album Solace, Australian band Rüfüs Du Sol have returned with a new single, “Alive” — which means a fourth LP can’t be too far behind. At its start, “Alive” doesn’t welcome so much as loom. “There’s a pain in my chest that I can’t describe,” lead singer Tyrone Lindqvist drawls, “it takes me down and leaves me there.” The internal malaise of which he sings is a feeling relatable to many, especially given the past year: an unshakable burden; a bottomless pit. But rather than languish in sorrow, a look to the bright side: “At least I’m alive,” he repeats like a mantra. It cuts through the darkness like light through long-shuttered windows, propelled by spacious percussion, trance-like synths and a build to the high heavens. ...
And the group was still hard at work on more new music: In June 2019, the members were in the studio with A$AP Rocky the day before he turned himself in to Swedish police following an alleged street brawl (and was subsequently held in detention for two months). Still, the group dragged its feet on releasing singles — it still felt the album was unfinished. Then, everything stopped. The COVID-19 pandemic struck — and the Swedes, in a way, got what they wanted: much more time to work on the music. “Now we laugh about the early ideas,” says Angello. “We’re like, ‘Holy s–t — we were supposed to put that out?’ ” The pandemic may have had some silver linings for artists, but the Swedes weren’t immune to its many downsides. Sweden never fully locked down and only recommended wearing ma...
Launching in early June with “Lumartes,” an eight-and-a-half minute track by CircoLoco resident Seth Troxler, Circoloco Records kicked off in earnest a few days back with the release of its debut compilation album, Monday Dreamin’, which features a who’s who of house, techno and tech house, indie dance and more — with contributions from artists including Dixon, DJ Tennis, Sama’ Abdualhdi, Jamie Jones, Beduoin, Kerri Chandler Moodymann, Red Axes, Tale Of Us and Damian Lazarus. The project is a collaboration with Rockstar Games, the makers of games including the venerable Grand Theft Auto, and a company that has long given love to underground dance music by installing artists like The Blessed Madonna, Moodymann, Keinemusik, Solomun and other...
After applying a balm to our collective anxiety last month with the downtempo ballad “Nabi,” Peggy Gou is pulling us back onto the dancefloor with her new track “I Go.” Despite her relatively short tenure in the dance world, Gou is becoming a perennial summer banger-bringer, with hits such as 2018’s “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)” and 2019’s “Starry Night” already in her pocket. (Last summer doesn’t count, for obvious reasons.) A ready successor, “I Go” is sparkling dancefloor fantasy rendered in pink and lilac pastels, with Gou’s vocals breezing across trance-tinted melodies, a simmering acid synthline and a searing whistling sound that evokes images of seagulls soaring along the coast and endless horizons — images of freedom and possibility. In a statement, Gou shares that t...
From songs like Bree Runway’s “Hot Hot” to Megan Thee Stallion’s “Thot Sh–,” Hot Girl Summer is in full swing, and with Uniiqu3’s new mixtape B—-es Is Outside, Vol. 1, the Jersey club artist is ticking up the temperature a few degrees. “I wanted to get spicy on this one,” she told Complex. “The word ‘b—h’ could be controversial but after seeing so many women in hip-hop and rap use it to empower themselves, it empowered me. It makes me feel powerful, and badass, this mixtape embodies that feeling.”The project’s opener, “Outside Wit It Freestyle,” is an immediate highlight. Its production is sharp, dark and clubby with rumbling bass and punctuating vogue crashes — and dominating a continuous, piercing siren-like synth that recalls the never-ending ambulance wails that...
“Though Bieber is from Canada, his actions fit this mindset of American hegemony: ‘Oh well, it’s just a small band from France, I’m sure we can take their name, nobody will care,'” said Augé. Billboard reached out to a representative for Bieber for comment on Saturday. Previously, Rolling Stone reported that, according to Justice’s management, Bieber’s legal team did “reject” the original cease-and-desist letter. The cease-and-desist letter obtained by Rolling Stone read, “Your use of the Mark is illegal. You have not received permission from Justice to utilize the Mark. Moreover, Bieber’s work is in no way affiliated with, supported by, or sponsored by Justice. Such use of the Mark is not only illegal, but likely to dec...
Fresh voices are hard to find, but London newcomer TSHA is as bright and unique as they come. The young producer made waves with her 2018 debut and was soon scooped up by Ninja Tune and Counter Records. In October 2019 she graced Billboard Dance‘s emerging artists roundup. And just six months ago, she gifted listeners a blossoming bunch of tracks on the Flowers EP, but she’s already back with a new EP announcement and a lead single that’s perfectly set for summer fun. “OnlyL” is a subtle sunshine serenade, brimming with breezy melodies and hip-jerking electronic rhythms. Vocal duo Nimmo serve hypnotic melodies with a delightful echo-delay hook. It’s as calm and soothing a track as it is invigorating and free, an exciting first taste of the upcoming OnlyL EP, due for release Aug....
During a press conference Thursday in Belgium, government officials said that while they revere the festival and regret this outcome, they have to follow current law and react to the current situation regarding the virus, especially on an international scale. For Tomorrowland to happen, its roughly 75,000 daily attendees would need to undergo testing for each day of the three-day event, officials said Thursday. The Belgian government stipulates that private companies cannot do the testing, and today local officials noted that the police do not have the resources to provide that level of testing. The police also have stated that they would not be able to secure the area sufficiently if they would also have to check IDs and proof of vaccination. In a statement, Tomorrowland said th...
